Would you be annoyed by this or am I being unreasonable?

DH has bought something for the house without mentioning it to me and I am honestly a bit annoyed.

It was about £40 so its not like he's gone mad or anything but its something we absolutely did not need and I would have rather the money went towards other things tbh.

I only found out because the parcel turned up and when I asked what it was he said he'd ordered it a couple of days ago. I said I wish he'd mentioned it first and he said why, its hardly a big purchase and he doesn't ask me before buying things for himself.

I do see that point but I don't really think its the same when its something for the house? Especially when we've got other things coming up that we need to pay for.

I am not saying he needs to ask permission every time he spends money btw. If he wants to buy himself something with his own money then obviously thats different. But if its coming out of our joint account for something that is basically unnecessary then surely its reasonable to discuss it first?

He thinks I'm being controlling and making an issue out of nothing.

I do think this sounds controlling from what I am reading

RoxyRoo2011 · 04/09/2026 06:23

I’m off to Dunelm to get a heated airer for £40! He’s right, that is a bargain!

RoxyRoo2011 · 04/09/2026 06:16

I have no words for you OP. He’s bought something practical for the home to help save on drying costs and you’re going in on him for it. You’ve wound yourself up over £40 because he didn’t ask your permission. Controlling much. Poor fella.

Francestein · 03/09/2026 02:09

Do you buy things for the house without consulting him? Does he do laundry too? I kind of feel like he lives there too.

moderate · 01/09/2026 19:25

redskyAtNigh · 01/09/2026 18:42

which is absolutely lovely if you have plenty of money and plenty of space. If you don't have these things, then you don't go out and buy items that support you doing a task for a minimum amount of time when there is an alternative.

Does your husband not understand space constraints, or are you also rather controlling?

Either way it’s irrelevant to the OP, who still hasn’t answered whether she has ever bought anything without consulting her husband.

redskyAtNigh · 01/09/2026 18:42

moderate · 01/09/2026 18:39

Presumably he’d have bought it for the bit that he does though?

At least 50% because if OP is doing most or all of the laundry then he doesn't get to dictate how she chooses to do it. i do most of the laundry in my house; if DH bought a heated airer with no discussion and told me I was now going to use it, I would be having some choice words.

Cob81 · 01/09/2026 17:05

Why “at least 50%”? If it’s something used for the whole household use then why does he HAVE to be doing at least 50% laundry? It’s a shared household item they’ll all get use from anyway. Besides that, the fact he’s ok to spend £40 on an item for himself, means they’re not that hard up for money so this isn’t the case for her issue, it’s just the fact she’s controlling and you sound the same. I’d find it extremely hard to believe that you’ve never once in your entire life bought something for the house without discussing (aka asking permission) from your partner!!

LTB 😂

Cob81 · 01/09/2026 17:09

Nmiddleofnowhere · 28/08/2026 19:59

Its basically a different style, the heated one is more like a tower thing rather than the normal fold out airer.

Tbf I can see why he'd want it because apparently they dry things quicker and use less than the tumble dryer, but I still think we could have discussed it first 😂

I suppose the normal airer could go if we actually use the heated one all the time, which he says we will. I just don't like buying something before deciding what we're doing with the old one.

So if you stood your ground and said no and he still said he was buying it what would happen then? Or you one of these who thinks discussing means you saying no and that’s the end of it, your decision no matter what? Because looks like you definitely would have said no

Cob81 · 01/09/2026 17:05

redskyAtNigh · 28/08/2026 19:20

I'd be annoyed too. It sounds like £40 is a big deal for you so it should have been discussed. It's a big object so needs to go somewhere which might compromise space. And it will cost to run, which, if £40 is a big deal, I assume might also be a big deal.

And, unless DH does at least 50% of the laundry, he's bought you a household appliance that you don't want and will now feel obliged to use.

I'm with him. I think you're being controlling.
Do you consult with him over every single house item you buy?
How boring if you do.

IHaventStoppedCravingYet · 01/09/2026 13:09

I have a Lakeland one with a cover and it’s great. Use it daily in the winter when can’t dry washing outside. Have it on overnight and it’s all dry by the morning. He made a great purchase IMO and much better than using tumble dryer.

moderate · 01/09/2026 12:18

AFAICT, @Nmiddleofnowhere still hasn’t answered the question that several of us have asked: has she ever bought anything for the household without first consulting her husband?

FairKoala · 01/09/2026 11:17

Tbh if you have a tumble dryer and an airer then why would you need a heated airer

It would annoy the f*ck out of me.

Its the space it takes up plus the fact it uses electricity plus the fact that if you used this type of airer instead of the normal none and 10 mins in a tumble dryer at the end whilst clothes are still slightly damp you would end up having to get the iron and ironing board out and start ironing stuff which then costs you more time

I can see exh doing this type of stuff. Setting it all up then expecting the extra work and extra electrics it would cost to run and the ironing would be down to me

It would end up gathering dust and being moved around the room and end up breaking and being binned.

I think you missed the bit where he does half the laundry in the household. Even if he only uses it for the laundry he's responsible for, then it shouldn't be any skin off her nose that he made a £40 decision to make that part of his chores easier.

...Any getting 'annoyed' about it? Please. OP said she didn't like him getting a new one without deciding what to do the the old one? Seriously? An old fold-up clothes drier that costs all of £10 and she's looking to have a family meeting to decide what to do with it? That reeks of looking for an excuse to start an argument.

If that causes genuine bother, then I have no idea how those people navigate actual inconveniences in life without having a mental breakdown.

YorksMa · 01/09/2026 11:22

He's right. You sound controlling.

We’ve ended up with 4 airers that we’ve acquired over the years and honestly it’s great. Can wash a few loads without worrying about how to dry it (we don’t have a tumble dryer but when we did we only used it for sheets anyway). They don’t take up much space when folded away.

emmas123 · 01/09/2026 08:20

Reading your updates, yes you're 100% being unreasonable.
It's £40 on a functional household item (not something like a tacky starwars print or equivalent, which was kind of what I expected based on your reaction) to help him with a household chore he has 50% responsibility for.

That's a slippery slope you're descending - micromanaging small purchases and setting a precedent that things like that will need permission.

Um, so do I.
Sorry but you sound like an absolute nightmare.

CJ50Mum · 31/08/2026 22:32

Letty186 · 31/08/2026 17:29

Oh you really do, wouldn’t be without ours. Less use of the tumble drier and can be used as an ordinary airer if heat not needed …. Gets used all the time in winter when can’t hang clothes outside on the line.

OP I do think your DH can buy something for £40 that he thinks could be useful in the house without having to to ask ….

Same we love ours! Use it unplugged if it's sunny/warm in the house, use it heated if it's a cold day/in the evening, works great. Definitely use the tumble drier less

CJ50Mum · 31/08/2026 22:10

Nmiddleofnowhere · 28/08/2026 18:57

It was one of those big heated clothes airers 😅

We already have a normal airer and a tumble dryer so I just don't see why we needed another one tbh. He said it'll save on drying costs and that we'll use it loads over winter but I think he just saw it online and fancied it.

Its not even the thing itself really, its more that he just ordered it without mentioning it.

My husband also bought us a heated clothes airer, I didn't see the point in it, now I can't live without it!

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 31/08/2026 19:38

I wouldn't be annoyed. It sounds like a sensible alternative to the expensive running cost of a tumble dryer.

JRM17 · 31/08/2026 19:06

I'm with your husband you sound very controlling. It's a £40 heated airer not a 40inch d!ck ornament.
