To wonder if those in favour of the death penalty would be able to pass the sentence themselves?

Inspired by recent threads about people wanting the death penalty reintroduced, I was wondering - if there was an option for the family member of a murdered person to execute the person who did it, would you do it?

I am very fundamentally opposed to any kind of death penalty but I’m curious to know if those who do agree with it could do the deed themselves, and if so, where would you draw the line regarding method? I suspect a lot of people in favour would be ok pressing a button to administer lethal injection/pulling a lever to drop a trapdoor but would be less keen to (for example) chop someone’s head off with an axe or set them on fire?

Not really an AIBU but I’m really interested in the responses. Not looking to judge anyone for their stance either way, just curious about the thought processes.

I honestly don’t understand why you’re saying.

Why do I need a solution? Why can’t they just be murderers and carry on as they are?

but they are NOT murderer.

If you have some grand moral issue about the army, why not. But then, be consistent, what is your solution? People don't want to be murderer and why should they?

You keep avoiding the issue. I can imagine why you can't find an answer 😂but I am giving you a chance to clarify your position. So do.

Honestly you’re just talking nonsense.

soldiers can and will carry on murdering people. Just like people will carry on murdering children.

I am not required to provide a solution to them. Whether or not they want to be murderers doesn’t concern me in the slightest.

Yes they would, have you ever ventured onto Facebook? Many users have an IQ of 40 and I think they’d take pleasure in pulling the trigger themselves. I’ve heard hideous comments about migrants and I actually can picture those folk harming migrants if they had the chance.

Philosophically, i’m against the death penalty. However, if someone hurt my child, I’d happily kill them with my bare hands. And there’s a few others who I’d happily pass sentence on - such as that piece of human trash who sexually assaulted and murdered his 1 year old baby recently.

ScrimMN · 07/08/2026 21:37

Im an avid consumer of true crime and I remember watching a documentary about Sarah Payne years ago.
when I saw Roy Whiting’s grubby, smug face on the screen I remember thinking ‘you just need to go’ had he been in front of me at that moment I would have killed him.
I’ve had a similar feeling about other cases

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 07/08/2026 21:37

I can hand on heart say i would geniunely would be v comfortable passing sentence...

particularly since having children...maybe it means I am a sociopath...maybe it means I have had enough of undersentancing of male violence against women and children.

If it paid well enough id be happy to push the button as well! I'd want about 300k pa and max 20 hrs per week around school hours.

JohnofWessex · 07/08/2026 21:44

When we still had the death penalty in the UK very few lawyers or judges ever did more than one capital trial as the stress was to great

I have reported the post. If people are not allowed to query the content, the post should not be allowed to stay.

HJC88 · 07/08/2026 21:48

No, I would not.pass the death sentence on anyone and I would not physically execute someone.

I agree there are some heinous people out there, people who may not deserve to live a life because of what they've done, but I am not God and that decision should not lay with me and as such I would excuse myself from any case with a death penalty.

There are some very well documented cases of innocent people being hanged, once they're dead there's no resurrecting them and going "Oops, sorry, my bad".

Whosthetabbynow · 07/08/2026 21:49

Yes. Then I’d go shopping.

If somebody did anything to my children or my mum absolutely 💯

I’m not in favour of the death penalty, as such, but I’d not lose sleep over killing someone who hurt my loved ones.

theneighboureatmysalad · 07/08/2026 21:56

I think a lot of good people would sleep perfectly well knowing they had removed a genuine menace.

What they might never sleep through again is seeing the victims of someone who was allowed to kill, torture or rape again because the death penalty wasn’t applied in the first place.

So on balance...

LiuBei · 07/08/2026 21:56

I think I could, although it is hard to know if you've never been in that circumstance. But I also think many people who speak English would struggle to work in an abbattoir. I think this type of inconsistency is very normal.

I am not sure what speaking English has to do with it

but a fair comparison would be people having to destroy a dangerous animal. Probably worst because said animals are only the result of abusive owners, but there are some risks we don't take, or shouldn't take.

grumpygrape · 07/08/2026 22:04

May I ask the ‘Yes, I would’ people what mechanism they would use for execution?

Also, whether they would want the person to suffer physically, especially as that physical suffering would be short lived ?

Isn't the deprivation of liberty enough punishment and suffering ?

Tsham · 07/08/2026 22:05

I’m opposed to the death penalty but if I was a Judge, and it was the lawful and appropriate sentence, I wouldn’t have any issue handing it down.

Would I want to execute someone myself? No, obviously.

Fair! Autocorrect from eat meat

Cherrysoup · 07/08/2026 22:06

Set them on fire?! Goodness me!

I once told my DH I thought family members of murder/rape/horrific crimes victims should be allowed an hour in a locked room and unlimited weapons/limits with the perpetrator. I still think that’s a great idea!

I think I would quite happily press the button for the lethal injection. I know there’s no comparison, but I’ve held every dog/cat who has been euthanised and it’s always been peaceful/easy. I know, however, that this is not always the case. I was feeding endless carrots to my horse when the vet was injecting him. It was shocking to see him just keel over, but I know the overdose of anaesthetic was probably very quick/kind.

Pedallleur · 07/08/2026 22:09

If the evidence was overwhelming eg Ian Brady, Wayne Couzens, Manchester Arena bomber I wouldn't hesitate.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 07/08/2026 22:15

Flot · 07/08/2026 18:45

I am only in favour of the death penalty in the most extreme cases, judged on a case by case basis. Eg Fred and Rose West. And yes, I would happily electrocute, inject or shoot those sub humans.

The burden of proof for a criminal conviction is something like beyond reasonable doubt. I’d raise it if the death penalty was on the table - to something like beyond virtually any doubt at all. So that would separate people like Axel Rudakubana (where doubt it was him = zero, so gets death penalty) from cases like Lucy Letby (where some people do have some doubt and it’s not as certain so she gets life in prison, to actually mean life).

Bottom line - yes I’d do it in the extreme cases.

So you want a two tier guilty verdict? 100% = death and where would you draw the line for just imprisonment?

Because right now we have guilty and not guilty, so you'd be fundamentally changing how it works to definitely guilty, probably guilty and innocent?

(I don't support the death penalty, so this may be obvious - I wouldn't want Axel Rudakubana executed, a number of services failed him repeatedly and his family should have done more as well. The murders could, and should, have been prevented.)

NoisyUmberBalonz · 07/08/2026 22:16

As soon as I realized how many released murderers kill again, and how many more innocent people die that way compared to people wrongly executed I became pro death penalty. It also acts as a minor deterrent and gives restorative justice to families of victims. Some people (serial killers, child murderers) can't be rehabilitated and society is better off without them.

The only argument I can see against it to be honest is that it places an understandable moral weight on those ordering and carrying out the sentence. But I could do it to be honest (would still need it to be incontrovertible evidence).

NoisyUmberBalonz · 07/08/2026 22:18

And to answer the poster above me Rudakabana would be first on my list. No one failed him he is a psychopath.

He wouldn't have the death penalty for the same reason he didn't get a whole life sentence: he was 17 when he committed the crime.

Everyone who wants the death sentence, who do you think should be executioner? Somebody has to have that job. I'm not sure it's one that a huge majority of people could do.

There is no evidence it works as a deterrent. Most murders are either planned, in which case they think they'll get away with it or spur of the moment so they're not thinking of consequences at all.

Doesn't murder actually have a low recidivism rate?
