To wonder if those in favour of the death penalty would be able to pass the sentence themselves?

Inspired by recent threads about people wanting the death penalty reintroduced, I was wondering - if there was an option for the family member of a murdered person to execute the person who did it, would you do it?

I am very fundamentally opposed to any kind of death penalty but I’m curious to know if those who do agree with it could do the deed themselves, and if so, where would you draw the line regarding method? I suspect a lot of people in favour would be ok pressing a button to administer lethal injection/pulling a lever to drop a trapdoor but would be less keen to (for example) chop someone’s head off with an axe or set them on fire?

Not really an AIBU but I’m really interested in the responses. Not looking to judge anyone for their stance either way, just curious about the thought processes.

NB* Not a journalist or writing any sort of article!

Well arent you glad others dont otherwise we'd all be speaking German and living under the NAZIS?
BTW I think you are on a windup so I wont be responding to you anymore

It’s very weird that you answered if you’re so desperate not to talk to me.

you haven’t even understood what I’m saying. what a waste of your time

I'm completely opposed to giving the state the power to build facilities to kill its citizens and then decide who is sent there based on them being part of a qualifying group. It would be easy to get people on board initially - qualifying groups are murderers, paedophiles etc. It would also be easy for an extremist government to expand the groups to include anyone they consider a problem and then we have a very unsafe situation. Too outspoken? Disability costing money? Long term unemployed? There's a solution for you and "the people" voted it in albeit as a Trojan horse. Human rights protections have to apply to everyone in order to be effective even if that is a bit unpalatable at times.

theneighboureatmysalad · 07/08/2026 19:23

so care to tell us what your solution is?

My solution to what? Murderers?

Weeellokthen · 07/08/2026 19:30

I am opposed to the dp but I'm honestly unsure that I wouldn't want/need to unleash my own retribution if a family member had been murdered.

KentnotClarke · 07/08/2026 19:32

There are some cases that are unequivicol aren't there where there really is no doubt.

With CCTV now and people filming and amazing DNA.

MyPlumHelper · 07/08/2026 19:34

No I couldn't do it. I think the best punishment is then.Living the rest of their life behind bars, never able to leave.

Flumposie3 · 07/08/2026 19:38

Yes. I could have done it for poor Preston Davey.

Pistachiocake · 07/08/2026 19:43

You could say that about meat eaters and slaughter, non vegans and milk. Even surgery- I think relatively few of us would be comfortable cutting into people, even to help them.
But I don't see that those who agree with the DP would have a problem? In American states where it is legal, most of the family of a murdered daughter want to go and watch it, so surely they'd be glad to execute the person who tortured their child to death?

pondplants · 07/08/2026 19:46

I initially misread the question as - would you be willing to sentence and execute a family member who had committed a terrible crime. I find that more interesting! If you agree with the death penalty would you be willing to sentence your own family members? Could you do it? Cos if you agree with it theory you should be willing to be the person who does it for someone you know and care about.

CelticSilver · 07/08/2026 19:48

From The West Wing:
'Charlie, would you like to see the man who killed your mother put to death?'
'No, Mr President ... I'd like to kill him myself.'

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 07/08/2026 19:48

Yes. In a heartbeat. I'd also throw the switch. Without a moments hesitation.

My solution to what? Murderers?

If you believe soldiers who kill someone while on duty are "murderers".

If your opinion is correct, and it is murder, what is your solution if people do not want to be murderers? Why should they?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/08/2026 19:53

I am very opposed to it too!

In part because I wouldn’t want to either create a situation where someone decent felt they had to take the job of executing people for a decent wage, or encourage someone who would actually enjoy that work.

It must be terrible for judges too.

There’s a bit in Rumpole of the Bailey where he says how awful it was to do murder trials in the days of capital punishment- “death around every corner, death if you ask the wrong question…” It’s really stayed with me.

Quite apart from other arguments like the fact it’s irrevocable in the case of miscarriages of justice that will always happen.

Vitany · 07/08/2026 20:02

Used to be anti. Then I became a psychologist and also a mum. I'd happily pull the trigger to anyone who did to my kids what some did to my clients when they were children.

They do want to be murders though don’t they? They wouldn’t do the job otherwise

you’re adding your own narrative around the word murderer. I am simply describing someone who kills people. Does it make any difference if we call them killers instead?

eta- why should they what?

getthroughonemoreday · 07/08/2026 20:08

Yes, I think I could if I were convinced of their guilt. I don't consider it murder. It's justice.

Execution in the modern era doesn't involve torturing people by setting them on fire or anything equally gruesome, so I'm not sure why that's part of the question. That said, there have been cases where it seems unfair that the criminals victim had to suffer terribly while the criminal himself gets off comparatively easy, even if he is executed.

Lmnop22 · 07/08/2026 20:11

If someone murdered my children, I would set them on fire and watch them burn alive without losing a moments sleep!

BMW58 · 07/08/2026 20:11

If I were in absolutely no doubt of their guilt I believe I could do it.

But I do think the Guillotine should be used as it must be the quickest and most painless method.
If I were to be executed it's the method I'd choose.

Ilovemyshed · 07/08/2026 20:12

On unrepentant shits like those that killed PC Harper? Absolutely.

FortyFacedFuckers · 07/08/2026 20:19

I was abused as a child and I would have absolutely no hesitation in doing it to my abusers or anyone that harmed my child/family or any other children for that matter

Dmsandfloatydress · 07/08/2026 20:26

If someone murdered by own child I would have no problem at all joining a firing squad and shooting them or indeed spending a hour with them in a locked room equipped with several blunt instruments of my choice. There would need to be incontravertable evidence including DNA and possibly footage of the act though, like the moors murderers or those bastards who killed little Arthur or little Preston. Could I kill someone who was definately guilty but not murdered by child- no. Which is why I dont beleive in the death penalty , the impact on those prison staff who have to carry out the killing.

They do want to be murders though don’t they?
no, they don't.

You are completely avoiding the question. Even if you were right and being a soldier was “murder”, then what? Soldiers are not murderers or killers, but if becoming a soldier meant they would be murderers or killers, then what? No soldiers? No army?

Again, what is your actual solution? Grand moral statements are easy. Articulate the argument.

I honestly don’t understand why you’re saying.

Why do I need a solution? Why can’t they just be murderers and carry on as they are?

FabulousWealthyTart · 07/08/2026 21:16

Have you ever lost a child to a violent death?
I'd pass sentence in a heartbeat.

PollyBell · 07/08/2026 21:16

Well people do they have the death penalty because there are people who do actually carry it out so i may be able too i wouldn't know till I am in the situation

I can't say i am totally for it but why would it be surprising there are people do it as they do already
