DH's comment about my bikini has really knocked my confidence

We're on holiday at the moment and this happened yesterday before we went down to the pool.

I'm late 20s and I've put on quite a lot of weight over the last few years and I'm not pretending otherwise. I don't look the same as I did a few years ago and when I met DH and I'm aware my body has changed.

I've sometimes struggled with my confidence because of it, especially when it comes to things like swimwear but I decided before this holiday that I didn't want to spend the whole time worrying about how I looked.

I brought a bikini that I've had for a while that I always loved and felt good in. It's definitely tighter than it used to be, but I didn't think it looked terrible. I felt comfortable in it and I actually looked in the mirror and thought I looked okay, which can be quite rare.

I came out of the bathroom ready to go and I saw DH give me a funny look.
I asked him what was wrong and he said "Nothing", but I said "No, what is it?"
Eventually he said, "I was just surprised you were wearing that bikini."

I asked him what he meant and he said that he thought it looked too tight and that they were digging in on me. He said he wasn't trying to be horrible, but he was only saying it because he'd rather I knew than walked around the pool feeling uncomfortable or looking silly.

I know he probably wasn't trying to hurt me, but it really upset me. I hadn't asked him what he thought. I wasn't standing there asking if the bikini suited me or if it still fitted, I was just ready to go.

Until then I actually felt quite good about myself. After he said it, I felt really self-conscious and ended up changing into a swimsuit because I didn't feel comfortable wearing the bikini anymore.

I spent the rest of the day feeling rubbish, which annoyed me because my weight and how I look is already something that bothers me and I was trying to make an effort to avoid that..

Last night I told him that his comment had upset me. He said he didn't understand why I was making such a big deal out of it because he hadn't said it to be mean or nasty. He said if he was wearing something that didn't fit properly, he'd want me to tell him. I said I would if he asked me, but I wouldn't just look at him and point something out that I knew would surely make him feel bad.

He's very 'black and white' sometimes and his view seems to be that couples should be honest with each other even if its not nice to hear. I think there are some things you don't need to say unless someone actually asks.

For balance and to be fair to him, he is normally a good husband and I don't think he was trying to be mean/cruel. I just don't know if I'm overreacting, or whether he should have kept that thought to himself in the moment

AIBU to be so upset over this?

Telling me I look funny if I'm going out in public, at home, fully dressed, is one thing. Telling me I look funny when I'm on holiday wearing only a bikini, just to sit around the hotel pool in, where no-one knows me and I'm trying to relax and enjoy myself is a whole other thing. Men should never comment negatively on how their partner looks in the latter situation. Hardly anyone looks good in a bikini irl. He's an insensitive idiot. I hope you can enjoy your hols OP.

This. Youre not so stupid you wouldnt realise it’s uncomfortable. 🙄 He made a mistake to comment and should be apologising.

But he didn't voluntarily comment. He only did so after being pushed. I don't think he's got anything to apologise for.

plumbus39 · Yesterday 19:16

It sounds like he was caught by you thinking something that he wasn’t actually planning to tell you. If you’d not seen the “funny look” then you would have gone out in that bikini none the wiser.

However if he’d also not told you what he thought once you saw his look, you may have been left wondering what he said and guessed what he was thinking anyway…

It doesn’t sound like he was deliberately trying to make you feel bad, although appreciate that it still did (and would make me feel crap too!)

Hollsbellesxxx · Yesterday 19:22

If you’re uncomfortable about your weight, you have the power to change it. Your husband noticed it didn’t look good and told you - surely you want to know if something doesn’t look good? Wouldn’t you tell him? He’s not saying you’re fat, just said it didn’t look good. It’s good he was being honest. Do keto or calorie deficit, lots of ways to lose extra weight.

ElectricLegs · Yesterday 19:23

He needs a list of what is acceptable e.g: tight bikini - no, visible tampon string or misaligned pad - yes, etc. etc. etc.

Noodles1234 · Yesterday 19:24

Everyone puts on weight / loses weight all the time.

Put that bikini back on, rock that look all over the pool, dance if you have to.

Life is way too short for worrying what some person 6 loungers to the left thinks or feels about you. They will forget after

I’d want my husband to tell me if I didn’t look nice in an outfit, but if you’d rather your husband not tell you then this is the perfect time to discuss it so he won’t tell you again. I’d tell my husband if his clothes looked tight and were digging in, I would be telling him matter of factly not in an unkind way.

I agree

I'm trying to think where a bikini might look tight?

Notonthestairs · Yesterday 19:28

The funny look was designed to provoke you to ask the question.

An initial refusal to answer thus increasing the tension & your concern regarding what he was withholding.

Until finally he was “forced” to tell you he thought it was too tight.

Then it’s your fault you asked.

If he is compelled to have input on your clothing choices a more pleasant way would have been to suggest an outfit he loved rather than put down the one you were wearing.

I really doubt this, that he’s that Machiavellian and sat and thought right I will give her a funny look so she asks, then ramp it up by refusing to answer.

it is overwhelmingly more likely he was caught off guard.

Yes, it was clearly biology doing its thing!

Notonthestairs · Yesterday 19:35

But there was nothing stopping him simply saying you look amazing in XYZ rather than knocking the bikini.
He absolutely could have been more positive rather than leaving her feeling worse.

Ajas · Yesterday 19:38

A lot of people wear inappropriate clothing, or clothes that are too small. Just because you are comfortable in it, doesn't mean it looks good. Maybe it was embarrassing to him. Maybe there was a cameltoe. I would definitely want to know if I didn't look my best. I tell my husband of almost 40 years when there is something about his appearance that needs changing or adjusting. If OP had something in her teeth or nose, she wouldn't have the same reaction. But since this is a sensitive issue with her, it touched a nerve and hurt her feelings. That's what a husband should apologize for, even if it was unintentional. However, no one wants to see people on the beach, in the mall, or at a park wearing clothes, or especially swimsuits, that are too small.

TinyFlamingo · Yesterday 19:41

"Husband the only thing that's making me feel uncomfortable and silly is you. The man who is supposed to love me. Knocking my confidence is cruel."

woollybunny · Yesterday 19:41

You may have looked good to him, but perhaps because the bikini was tighter, it may have looked too sexual for the pool? It need not be an indication that he doesn't find you attractive in that bikini.
And good for you that you still went swimming and later told him how you felt -- don't let it weigh on you or take away from your trip or relationship <3

Chrisdomonic · Yesterday 19:42

Your not being unreasonable i think your husband should have kept that comment to himself. He should have boosted your confidence and told you, you looked good in it but if only you lost a few pounds you would look amazing. End of the deal people's feelings are getting hurt here.

LoudTealHare · Yesterday 19:43

jessywxo · 06/08/2026 11:04

As i've already said above, there's a big difference between 'I think that looks a little bit tight', and (what he said) 'I'm surprised you're wearing that', which implies that it's ridiculous for me to wear it. That's what upset me. Its not like I was squeezing myself into something that was multiple sizes too small.

Also for people saying i 'badgered' him...are you seriously saying that if your partner gave you a very odd look and you asked them what was wrong and they said 'nothing', you'd just go 'oh, ok, it's nothing then'? Yes I asked him what was up, but there's tactful ways of saying things to someone. That's my point,

I'm aware I need to lose weight and i'm working on it, so I don't need people to tell me and advise me about that. Regardless of that, i'm still entitled to try and feel happy and comfortable while I do.

Personally unless you are really slim, bikinis look awful! Ive gone the opposite to you I’ve gone from a size 20 to a 14 and still I would not wear a bikini, even though I’ve got all the bits in the right place now!

Is he on the autistic spectrum? It's common for people with autism to be a "tone deaf" and genuinely lack the ability to read social cues or empathise. If he's not autistic, there's no excuse: he's just cruel.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · Yesterday 19:56

It does seem like he wanted to shame her.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · Yesterday 20:00

I often wonder about the intentions of the inventor of the bikini. Did they hate women in general? Only a minority of us can wear one with confidence, and even then only for a few years. It's not even enough to be skinny, you have to be curvy in all the right places and have perfectly even skin.

MamaToABeautifulBoy · Yesterday 20:02

I cannot see what he did wrong 🫤

I’d rather DH told me if he thinks something looks too tight. As I would him.

I think men cannot win sometimes.

Your husband was insensitive, my husband is very literal and it wouldn't surprise me if he would say the same. Men!!

Ah I’m so sorry op, I think men think they’re helping. He shouldn’t have said anything

Had he said nothing though and some incident, look or whatever made her feel uncomfortable at the pool I would bet good money that she would blame him for not saying anything.
