to tell son NOT to post memes of black people

Please help me . Huge row with 11 year old.

His friend posted a meme of a black person with "bombastic side eye".

He wants to repost it to some silly comment.

I said it is wrong and not the right thing to do even if the person "bombastic side eye" posted it himself on tin tok.

Please give me your thoughts.

That’s ridiculous. As a black person, I use memes of white people, black people, cats, dogs, et al. I find the most appropriate meme/gif and use it.

Jesus, dont tell cats there are memes about them, they'll have us!!!

He's 11. He shouldn't be on WhatsApp for starters.

Thank you . I totally agree. He is only allowed WhatsApp 15 min x 2 a week during the summer holidays. A lot of his friends are overseas travelling. And the entire year group is on it. I already have the accusations from him that I am trying to isolate him from his friends.

Nip it in the bud, OP.

As the adult you didn't need to have a huge row with your 11yr old son - you just tell him that it's unacceptable and explain why.

A colleague's partner once shared a racist joke on my WhatsApp and I immediately replied "I can't believe you thought I would find that funny. Never share anything with me again".

It's not even up for discussion, let alone a row.

But a racist joke and a non-racist meme surely can’t be compared?

Is the meme joke anything to do with the guy being black? Or would it be funny in exactly the same way if the guy was white? If so and he just happens to be black, I don’t see an issue with it. However, if him being black is part of the joke, no then your son (assuming he isn’t black himself) should not be posting it.

Well if he can't behave in an appropriate manner when he has contact with them, them he has to live with the consequences.

You are his parent not his buddy.

liverburd1 · 17/08/2024 13:47

So would re-posting any funny meme with a black person be racist? I assume this would also apply to any other non-white race?

So in turn we should only have memes featuring white people? In which case are we not at risk of being non-inclusive?

I actually know the exact meme you mean and I had thought the black man was actually someone famous. I could be wrong

SonicTheHodgeheg · 17/08/2024 13:47

Is it racist ?

As an exercise I put in bombastic side eye in the “add GIF” part of this website and there’s a mixture of people and animals shown.

mazxim · 17/08/2024 13:49

Because some other kid has been posting GIF of a black person dancing and writing the N word under it. And I reported to other parents that it was inappropriate. That's why I am super sensitive about it I guess.
Thanks for all your opinions. I will take it on board.

He isn’t acting inappropriately

Yeah, I didn't know what the meme was until after I'd posted when I saw other pps had made it clearer. Jumped the gun a bit there...

No it's just a meme where the person happens to be black

SummerSplashing · 17/08/2024 13:50

Overtheatlantic · 17/08/2024 13:37

It’s racist. Black people don’t exist for the amusement of others.

@Overtheatlantic neither do white people, brown people, cats, but people still
post funny memes. It's not posted because he's black, it's posted because he a bloke doing something daft that isn't related to him being black.

@mazxim

you're being daft

mazxim · 17/08/2024 13:51

May be I was supersensitive to it. I was really appalled at what the other student had posted which was racist, and I just want my child to be more sensitive and considerate to what he posts after what happened.

OP posts:
PinkyFlamingo · 17/08/2024 13:52

Can any one who says it's racist explain why as I don't get it?

That’s completely different. That’s someone taking an image of a black person and then using it to use racist language. That is calling a person the N word.

That is entirely different to simply posting a meme. If his funny comment was a racist comment then his comment is racist. That doesn’t make posting memes of back people, at all, racist.

But surely if he wanted to post a racist comment that would be your issue. Not using a meme.

In that case I agree he should steer clear, it might muddy the waters a bit But as others say ges too young for these apps.

SummerSplashing · 17/08/2024 13:53

Reugny · 17/08/2024 13:42

He's legally too young for WhatsApp and tik tok.

Tell him if he posts it you will ban him from the apps until he shows he is mature enough to be allowed to use them, then follow through by confiscating his phone and replacing it with a dumb phone.

@Reugny

why shouldn't he post it?

Sandwichgen · 17/08/2024 13:53

Surely only wrong if he is doing it to amplify what the other kid did?

Lemia · 17/08/2024 13:54

I think it’s a bit ridiculous telling him he can only post memes of people of his own race.

silverjackal · 17/08/2024 13:55

What's race got to do with anything here?

GreyTS · 17/08/2024 13:56

Gotta love white people, always jumping in to tell people shit is not racist 🙄 my friend is black and she doesn't find that racist.....same on a thread the other day, Irish people explaining calmly why a saying was offensive but no you all know better, your Irish grandmother/ friend/partner think it's hilarious. Honestly you Brits are literally violently racist, just say you don't give a shit and stop trying to justify yourselves and your language towards minorities

How would it muddy the waters.

Posting memes is fine

posting memes along with the n word isn’t not fine. The water is crystal clear. The difference is crystal clear.

I would be really concerned if people couldn’t see the difference between to 2. The meme is not the problem. Accompanying it by racist language is

Do piss off.

I am not white. You do realise plenty of people are British and also not white.

You do realise that people post on MN who are not white and are not British don’t you?

5128gap · 17/08/2024 13:59

Its nuanced. You won't get a consensus either way on here, probably nowhere tbh. But the point is, you don't need it. He's 11. If you as the responsible adult in charge of him have sufficient doubt to question it, then don't allow it. Its hardly a huge impeachment of his rights to tell him not to do something you find controversial. In 7 years time he will have the rest of his life ahead to make his own decision. Right now, you're in charge.

Thankfully you, the hero of civilisation, have arrived to explain to everyone why it’s racist. But you haven’t.

All you’ve done is make racist comments. In fact, the only racism on here is from you….
