When the first Christmas cards start landing on your doormat, you know the festivities are not far away. For a long time, it has been a staple Christmas tradition but while sending cards en masse is becoming less popular, there’s still plenty of our Mumsnet users who enjoy sending them to loved ones at Christmas.
With the option of digital e-cards, text messages and social media making it quicker, easier and, of course, cheaper, to spread love to your friends and family at Christmas, the tradition of writing cards has far from gone away yet. Our Mumsnet users who love to send cards say they like to send them to friends and family who live further away, with personalised cards becoming a more popular option for close friends and family.
With immediate family we do nice thoughtful cards. I always buy a pick to send to relatives we never see too. And have a few spare to send if people don't send to me.

I like sending cards, it seems a more personal greeting than a text. I buy cards that I really like rather than charity cards (but could be both) and then donate money to a local charity where I know they get 100%.

If you’re not giving up on card-writing just yet, picking the right one for the lucky recipient can be just as much fun as sending and receiving them. Do you go for funny, cute or traditional? Thankfully, John Lewis caters to all of those options, with a huge range of cards. including pop up cards, cute animal themes - cat in a Santa hat, anyone? - and jokes that will get your friends and family laughing. There’s also bumper packs of charity cards to choose from, so you can contribute to a good cause too. All in the spirit of Christmas, right?
