Free with in-app purchases

The app is designed to be easy for children to navigate, encouraging them to use it independently and without the need for voiceover instructions or constant feedback. Instead, they can rely on valuable cognitive resources and try to figure out problems for themselves through play.

It will help develop key skills surrounding letters, colours, shapes, problem solving, puzzles, motor skills, and creative expressions. It also boasts children's digital literacy - which is the ability to communicate information via digital media platforms - through skills such as tapping, dragging and drawing.

👶 Guidance on screen time for children

Realistically, it can be hard for busy parents or carers of babies under two to ban screen time completely with the WHO Guidance on no screen time. For babies above two, they recommend no more than an hour of screen time a day and this remains the recommendation up to the age of four.* Top tip: Instead, control the quality and duration of what they’re watching.

How does the app work?

Kids will join JJ and his family to take on an array of fun tasks and puzzles. You may spend a day learning letters at the beach with JJ, take a trip to Old Macdonald’s Farm and count some eggs, or have fun with toys at bath time.

There are no right or wrong answers, just activities that will strengthen children’s fine motor skills, curiosity, vocabulary and problem-solving.

While there’s a big focus on independent learning, there is also a parent dashboard with curriculum details and progress reports.

The app is currently available in both Spanish and English, and available on both iOS and Android.

What is edutainment and why is it beneficial?

CoComelon may not be your favourite, but there’s no denying its popularity with kids. Edutainment is when you educate through entertainment, and it’s a powerful tool with little ones. Especially when they are able to see beloved characters or sing along to familiar songs.

Familiar characters are more engaging for children and when they care about a character, such as JJ, they are more likely to remain focused. It also encourages emotional connections to be formed, which can help children retain information.

When children feel an emotional connection to a character, they may feel more motivated to learn too. Plus, familiar characters can become role models and children are more likely to imitate their positive behaviours and attitudes. If a character is also emotionally connected, it can support a child’s social-emotional development by helping them understand emotions and how to express and manage them.

The app is designed to aid independent learning, but parents can still monitor what their child is doing easily

How much is the CoComelon app and subscription?

The app itself is free to download with at least five replayable games for kids, but you can sign up for a monthly subscription that costs £4.99 for your first month, then £7.99 thereafter and gives you full access to the app. That includes an extended suite of playful learning games and additional parent dashboard tools.
