"Nurses speak of their distress at being instructed to insist to their female patients that there are no men present, in the clear presence of a man identifying as a woman. Who can they turn to when their employer, union and regulator are all Stonewall Champions?"

I just came on here to post this.
Absolute corker of an article.

That's an astonishing piece - and in the HSJ which is very well-regarded and valued. HSJ has superb journalists and is a genuinely useful source of information.

Well done to Kate Grimes!

That is such a clear and well reasoned piece. I have bookmarked it for future reference. I would love to be able to articulate my thoughts in that manner. Instead of losing my rag Confused

Sadly nurses will not be supported by the main nursing union if they raised their concerns because the Royal College of Nursing list gender and gender identity/reassignment as protected characteristics in their Inclusion Cafe booklet. I have emailed them, more than once, to ask them to correct it to sex and gender reassignment but my emails remain unanswered and the booklet has not been corrected.

Good luck to any nurse relying on the RCN to represent them in any matter covered by the EA 2010.

"My concerns are three-fold. First, and most importantly, Stonewall’s influence is undermining our ability to keep our patients safe. Secondly, it stifles free speech and creates a culture of fear amongst some staff. Thirdly, it gives misleading and potentially unlawful advice, opening up NHS organisations to litigation and reputational damage."

Coo!

This comment reports something that I've seen so often on Twitter or in various carer forums:

This is more than a trans issue. It's about social norms and expectations and 'gendered norms'. Being on wards where younger and female patients were too scared to visit the bathroom because it was shared with older and male patients - some who were there briefly whilst being assessed and were sometimes unsociable, highly distressed or unstable themselves, and also aggressive - was more than unpleasant. It caused confusion and added distress for already unwell people. It distracted from and diminished care and was an added burden for patients and staff to negotiate.

Previously safe spaces became unsafe.

Another brilliant article.
Shame on Stonewall and shame on all those in the NHS who have been party to this institutional capture.

That is a blistering article. The point she makes is such an important one - that Stonewall has raised trans people’s rights above many other protected groups and refused to allow this to be debated. That is the problem in a nutshell.

Great article and this "employer, union and regulator are all Stonewall Champions" made me realise that the regulators are a massive issue. EHRC have left the scheme so surely the regulators should be told to... how can they 'regulate' otherwise?

"Stonewall’s divisive approach". Divisive was used by Simon Fanshawe on R4 TP this week too. Accurate word that, Divisive.

Such a good point about the trusts, unions and regulator all being stonewall members

Seems there's a strong need for Stonewall Divesting Champions in NHS Trusts and organisations.

The GMC is still totally captured, sadly. Its LGBT+ staff forum has the whip hand over a very feeble ED&I dept. The women's staff forum has fallen to the intersectionalists. Meanwhile, the sex of doctors is being concealed from patients. Expect to see more 'women' in front of tribunals...

@FindTheTruth

I've noticed the comments under the article from NHS people involved with Stonewall

Some of whom are coming up with wholly inaccurate descriptions of the LGB Alliance.

I wonder when the commenters will deign to reflect on why they want to know the identity of the anon people. What would they do if they identified them?
