"Nurses speak of their distress at being instructed to insist to their female patients that there are no men present, in the clear presence of a man identifying as a woman. Who can they turn to when their employer, union and regulator are all Stonewall Champions?"

Absolutely brilliant article!! well done Kate Grimes so hitting the nail on this head of the toxic organisation which is Stonewall. We have all had enough of this nonsense. Men cannot become women and thank goodness for yesterday result for Maya Forstater!!!! Women need to feel safe, particularly in single sex wards, prisons, changing rooms etc.

FindTheTruth · 11/06/2021 15:31

@RoyalCorgi

Some of the comments are so stupid. The usual crap about transphobia etc. The usual refusal to care about the experiences of women.

I suspect a TRA pile-on rather than this being a reflection of how people in the NHS think. Though who knows? Maybe they really are that thick.

No doubt some MRA whatsapp groups pointed to it
B3ingBraver · 11/06/2021 15:48

Quick name change! I have just used much of Kate's text to write to my employer and ask them to withdraw from the scheme.

Thank You Kate.

MargaritaPie · 11/06/2021 16:00

Is Ms. Grimes an official spokesperson for the NHS may I ask?

Iggi999 · 11/06/2021 16:04
Hmm
Iggi999 · 11/06/2021 16:06

Daft question. If she were speaking on behalf of the NHS she wouldn't be calling on them to withdraw from stonewall, she would be announcing that they were withdrawing.

Good to hear. So many staff and patients harmed by this. And LGB persecuted by them

There isn't really "the NHS" in the sense you mean. It's made up of thousands of organisations. That's why there are parts that have signed up to Stonewall and parts that haven't. Even NHS England/Scotland etc only speak for certain parts of the service.
FindTheTruth · 11/06/2021 16:11

@zanahoria

"My concerns are three-fold. First, and most importantly, Stonewall’s influence is undermining our ability to keep our patients safe. Secondly, it stifles free speech and creates a culture of fear amongst some staff. Thirdly, it gives misleading and potentially unlawful advice, opening up NHS organisations to litigation and reputational damage.

three shots on target

I know it was posted up thread but that pararaph is so damned good, I may have to mermorize it

yes. the culture of fear and 'not saying anything' and not 'bringing your whole self to work' is so negative. It's not transphobic to disagree with gender theory and gender critical doesn't mean harassing or misgendering a colleague at work, yet until now it's been so hard for staff to say they disagree with Stonewall law.

Did she identify that way?

Or did the preamble to her comment piece?

FindTheTruth · 11/06/2021 16:24

@EmbarrassingAdmissions

I wonder if there will be competition to sign up Kate Grimes to Sex Matters or any of the other groups, if she's willing?
I would like to see this too.
FindTheTruth · 11/06/2021 16:26

Re nurses will not be supported by the main nursing union and Royal College of Nursing, now that all beliefs are protected can a sensible discussion happen?

PurpleWh1teGreen · 11/06/2021 16:59

I wrote to all of the candidates for president a few weeks back asking about their views on single sex wards (spoiler alert no replies).

Feels like time to try again.

FindTheTruth · 11/06/2021 17:00

are there colleagues who will add their signature Purple?

highame · 11/06/2021 17:30

I wonder if the NHS checks that all its trans workers hold GRC and also any patients who identify as trans also hold a GRC and understands that even if they do there are still exceptions. Discrimination is sometimes acceptable

McDuffy · 11/06/2021 17:41

I emailed the editor and got a thank you back already Smile thanks for the idea!

Gmmllw · 11/06/2021 19:09

Really insightful article thanks for sharing

scaredsadandstuck · 12/06/2021 08:26

I'm a day behind! I just spotted this being tweeted by an HSJ journalist. I'm going to email the editor too.

I remember when single sex ward policy came in and it was something NHS organisations had to report on and we "boasted' about what % of our wards were single sex etc. Now of course I it is (in theory) standard practice - but with a massive caveat. Feels like we've gone backwards!

Rejoiningperson · 12/06/2021 17:27

@zanahoria good paragraph to list. There are a few problems aren’t there and it very eloquently outlined them. One of them for me, is that if biological sex is recognised as fact, then calling a single sex ward, single sex when it isn’t, is a lie. That’s quite important. Mixing wards and patients being clear that they may be next to a man or woman gives that patient at least the information that might be very pertinent to how they conduct their own privacy. Not giving that information, hiding it, is problematic.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 12/06/2021 18:15

The comments are really heartening. Very little support for the posters shrieking 'transphobia', and lots of people clearly clued up on GC issues.

mustlovegin · 12/06/2021 23:41

What happens with women who require a single sex ward due to religious reasons?

mustlovegin · 12/06/2021 23:42

I keep reading that this issue appears to be very prevalent in Brighton. Are most areas in the UK similarly impacted or not?

Northernlurker · 12/06/2021 23:52

I agree it's a fantastic article. I commented too and what is so heartening is the number of likes the gender critical comments are getting.
