Hello everyone

I know a lot of people have been asking for template letters to send to their MPs so I have consulted with the other members of Sex Matters and come up with a template which I hope will help.

I have gone for a format which I hope will enable you to pick and choose which issues mean the most to you. I think MPs are best approached on one or two issues which you feel passionate about and can perhaps expand on the information I have given.

It is really important to personalise these letters as much as you can. The best results so far have come from people meeting their MP or MSP so if you feel able to do that please include it in your letter. The template letter is intended as a guide to help you get started, with links to evidence for any issues raised.

I will be refining the template as we go along, so if there is an issue which isn't covered please just let me know. Equally, if you think there is an issue which isn't quite right please tell me and I will amend it.

If you would like a template, please PM me and I will send it over.

Many thanks
Badger and Sex Matters

Bumping this post.

I work for an MP. We have had very few letters about self-ID. Please do write to your MP.

By all means, use a template, but please do personalise it- in our office standard template emails do not get an answer- anything personalised does.

(My MP is anti self ID- he is also my DH and I helped him peak trans a while ago, but for most, it's just not on their radar yet)

Terftastic · 27/03/2018 23:21

I will write to my MP now.

I have been holding off (my MP is a Tory stalwart, who is not known for his women's rights support - in fact, he was hauled over the coals for putting his hand on a certain journalist's knee recently...) but I don't want MPs to be able to say "we haven't received any letters from constituents about this".

So even if I get a brush off response, I'm going to write.

I'll add this as a resource here - might help people personalise concerns

Found this from tweet from Basher_McTurk.

Bumping this.

Thanks - I've DMed you. Agree that the more we can personalise the letters the better.

LongWeek how long would you expect an MP to take to reply? I emailed mine almost 3 weeks ago and am wondering when to follow up.

Badgerthebodger · 28/03/2018 08:51

I’ll catch up with PMs tonight for anyone who requests one today

Could I have one please? I’m also wanting to get a shedload if flyers printed to leave everywhere I go. I asked on another thread for a punchy message and circle gave me one but just wanted to put it out there before I press the ‘buy’ button. This company are so much cheaper than vista so not sure if the QR code to the petition will work but as I can get 5000 A6 size done for £20 I’m going with them. It’s cheapestprintsonline.co.uk. And I’m NOT affiliated to them in any way!

Thank you thank you thank you.

I have sent an email to my MP this morning, and also my local Labour party (we are a strong Labour area) and my local councillor who put a leaflet through my door yesterday.

Looking forward to some healthy debate, if at all possible.

@Cuntysnark can you pm me an image of your flyers??

Cuntysnark · 28/03/2018 09:41

athingthateveryoneneeds Will do but will be this afternoon. Just running it by a legal knowledged bod to ensure I’m not breaking any laws. I don’t give much of a shit but as I’m married to him-he does!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 28/03/2018 09:42

That's fantastic, thank you.

LongWeek · 28/03/2018 19:50

stilleto we aim for 2 weeks, which can stretch to 3.
I think no reply after 3 weeks is reasonable to chase.

Some MPs have a 28 day turn round apparently.
It will depend on whether they answer all the correspondence personally, or whether staff do initial drafts for them.

PsychoPumpkin · 28/03/2018 20:00

I wish I had an MP that would bother with this. Mine really only cares about keeping her seat and toes the party line on every single issue.

I’ve contacted her about numerous issues and get the same kind of response each time.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2018 20:25

I've been putting off writing to my MP because there are so many facets to the issue I couldn't work out what to write. Just today I was thinking about it again - wondering if asking him to read this www.bmj.com/content/360/bmj.k1312 would be a good idea?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2018 20:27

I use the app nowadays... is it possible to PM from it or will I have to try to remember my login details and do it from the browser?

2rebecca · 28/03/2018 20:36

I heard back from 2 Tory MSPs today. No other replies yet. Different replies which is interesting. One went through the communal Tory office manager and the other did his own thing. I wondered about pming you the replies Badgerthe bodger but wasn't sure if I should ask their permission first as I don't usually share email responses without the senders permission unless I keep it vague. Different if I'd mentioned I'd be sharing the response in my letter but that may lead to different vaguer responses.

Badgerthebodger · 28/03/2018 22:16

I am officially up to date with PMs!

Thank you all for taking the time to write Star

If anyone else would like the template, please let me know

Badger can you PM me please

Terftastic · 28/03/2018 22:27

Thanks Badger Thanks and will update. I'm expecting a brush off actually (Michael Fallon) - but I'll go for it!

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2018 22:35

Thanks badger - I realise I'll need to log in to pick up the pm anyway, but that's fine.

terftastic - maybe there's a chance that fallon might be somewhat sensitive to the concerns of women, having being caught by #metoo and accepted he was wrong?

Stilettosandan0venglove · 28/03/2018 22:39

LongWeek Thanks! I'll give him a nudge.

Terftastic · 28/03/2018 22:44

We can live in hope, Errol. I will update on the response - it'll be an interesting one. He's an aged Tory in one of the safest seats in the country. I don't honestly believe that he really believes that "men can become women" or suchlike... I doubt it would even be on his radar tbh.

whiteroseredrose · 28/03/2018 22:53

Hi can you pm me the template. I'm going to write to my MP and I could do with a starting point.
