The WEP women's declaration is signed by members and supporters and those who would like to support us by standing shoulder to shoulder across party lines to protect our sex based rights.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with the women from the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green Parties who have made similar petitions.

We, as members and supporters of the Party in our personal capacities, ask the Women’s Equality Party to acknowledge and support the following assertions:

-Women and girls throughout the world are discriminated against on the basis of their sex

-It is important to recognise that sex and gender are separate in meaning and law and when discussing potential changes to legislation

-There are times when a distinction has to be made between women and transwomen, between transgender people who have fully transitioned and transgender people who have not had any surgical or other medical intervention, and that making these distinctions does not constitute transphobia

-Women have the right to maintain their sex-based protections, as set out in the Equality Act 2010. These include female-only spaces such as changing rooms, hospital wards, sleeping accommodation, refuges, hostels and prisons

-Without the continued existence of sex as a category, enacting Equal Pay legislation and Gender Pay Gap measures becomes impossible. Changes to facilitate self-ID of sex would have this effect

-Women have the right to fair, single sex competition in sport. Trans athletes who were born male benefit from the natural effects of testosterone on superior musculoskeletal development through puberty as well as increased lung and heart capacity

-Women have the right to assemble and to discuss the potential impact of any proposed changes to law, policy or interpretation of either. In particular, the proposals to introduce a system of self-identification of gender or sex, and changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004 and the Equality Act 2010

-Nobody should be subjected to abuse and harassment for exercising that right

thank you for the thread WEPWoman

so this petition is to pressure the WEP leadership to recognise that women are oppressed on the basis of their sex? do you think it will gain any traction?

I know there is a male who was previously quite influential within the party. if they remain in place do you think attitudes will shift?

WEPwoman · 24/11/2019 22:43

I am sure the leadership already recognise that women are oppressed on the basis of their sex.

What all parties including WEP need to recognise is how important the law is in resisting that oppression and how women in all parties will not give this fight up.

Nope.

I will not beg any misogynistic party to change their stance. They should be begging us to come back. I will not vote for any party that sides with "gender", and I will only vote for parties that change their minds after they publicly apologize.

GC feminists have done nothing wrong, and we shouldn't act like we have.

So lets get this right.

Members of the Women's Equity Party have started a petition to get the leaders of the Women's Equity Party to consider that women are different from men and to ask that they don't call other women bigots for thinking that women are different from men.

Holy cow. You could not make this shit up.

I am deeply mistrustful of the WEP. You had your chance and you muffed it. Frankly, I see your petition as nothing more than gathering names of those nasty TERFs. I won't be signing.

Holy cow. You could not make this shit up.

Regrettably, in 2019, there are women from 4 political parties now compelled to publicly petition their leadership in this manner.

Women and men in all parties have misunderstood how important this is.

yup, I think that about covers it. I wish you well with the fight back WEPWoman, but I really have no faith at all in the WEP. Not just on trans issues. The leadership have shown that they don't really 'get' ordinary women

"I am sure the leadership already recognise that women are oppressed on the basis of their sex."
And chose to ignore that fact whilst chanting TWAW.

Well, no actually, they don't, which is one of many reasons why all these petitions are suddenly needed, despite our rights being supposedly enshrined in law Confused

Even if they backtracked now we all know that in their hearts they value men higher than women so, no, they are a bunch of idiots and I won't be begging them to please please think about the women.

Thanks for doing this WEP members - the petitions might not make a difference but silence definitely won't. At least if the issue is raised those in power can't pretend that everyone is ok with this appalling anti-women ideology. The more noise we make, the more ordinary women will hear us and the more chance there is that someone will have to take notice. Meanwhile I will continue to drink to dull the pain.

This petition isn't from the leadership though.

It's very heartening to see it IMO.

@WEPwoman what protection do we have that our names won't be passed to trans activists if we sign?

I know I'm just a random off the internet, but I know the women doing this and they ain't no TRAs!

No idea how they'd prove that to you though.

Well kudos to you for doing this, WEPwoman

I have to admit I'm disgusted with the actions of the WEP. It hurts so much more when it comes from a party supposedly set up for women, than from all the mainstream parties which we all know were set up by men for men.

I'll have a read - do you have to be a member to sign?

Report
arethereanyusernamesleftatall · 24/11/2019 23:42

Look at the women who've signed it early on. I recognise some familiar GC names there, I expect you will too if you're active. Does that help?

Uncompromisingwoman · 24/11/2019 23:43

Well done to the WEP women and the women from all political parties desperately trying to stop the removal of all sex based rights by their predominantly male colleagues. It is heartwarming to see women standing together, yet tragic to see that it has got to this.

The Public-Schooled, Oxbridge Graduate, Middle-class Women's Equality Party has left this a bit late.
They're a single issue party who cannot even support their single issue.

Report
GeordieTerf · 24/11/2019 23:45

Ha! Almost like the Greens... another single-issue party who have forgotten what their issue actually is!

Report
theflushedzebra · 24/11/2019 23:49

I love this!

I have to confess that I don't even know who the leader is now, since Sophie left.

WEP have been persona non grata to me for a long while now- since their webchat on here, in fact.

Is the new leader still declaring TWAW and misinterpreting Simone de Beauvoir?

No thanks - WEP have been the biggest traitors to women out of all the parties and i would have backed them if not for their stance on this issue

Looks like there are some women in the party who are trying to change that.

It appears that you'd rather just stand on the sidelines and sneer, though, that's a shame.

Signing the petition isn't about saying you support WEP.

It is supporting the women who are trying to get WEP back on track.

If nobody signs it than WEP can turn round as say we dont even have to think about it, only 5 women signed.

It is no different that signing the petitions started by Labour, Lib Dem or SNP women. You are supporting women fighting for their rights.

What happened to sisterhood?
