Should they be cancelled or is it going too far? They weren't like Little Britain, imho. Perhaps they were offensive. How far does it go though? Will there be anything left to watch pre 2020?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/06/2020 19:56

If course there shall be programs to watch

Not sure why either was removed never watched TMB and LOG gave me the creeps (I know it’s meant to but so much I couldn’t find it funny)

ChilliCheese123 · 10/06/2020 19:57

What was wrong with mighty Boosh? It was bonkers but don’t see anything racist about it ?

Singlebutmarried · 10/06/2020 20:03

It’ll be papa Lazou.

Daaaaave. I’m your wife now.

Samcro · 10/06/2020 20:04

Im more confused by the gone with the wind stuff, to be fair its a long time since ir read the book or saw the film.

MrsToothyBitch · 10/06/2020 20:09

I would imagine it's Pappa Lazarou that got the League removed.

ColourMeExhausted · 10/06/2020 20:10

I think it's ridiculous. Shall we just remove every play or programme that offends? We cannot rewrite the past, we need to look at the here and now and write our future. Ffs. I'm a huge LoG fan. And you know, comedy is designed to push limits, to provoke, to raise eyebrows and challenge our societal norms! If anybody has actually watched the League of Gentlemen they'll understand that it's a deeply, darkly clever comedy.

dayswithaY · 10/06/2020 20:11

What's happened to Gone with the Wind? Has it been banned?

cardibach · 10/06/2020 20:13

Gone the Wind is taken down for a bit while they put together info to put it in context. I think that’s unnecessary, but it’s no big deal. It’ll be back.

isseywith4vampirecats · 10/06/2020 20:14

this is getting silly now wont be any programs left soon

MittensTheSerpent · 10/06/2020 20:16

There will. Just not racist ones.

GabsAlot · 10/06/2020 20:18

problem is now they will tripping over themsevles to remove anything with the slightest offfensive thing in it

where does it end

dayswithaY · 10/06/2020 20:18

What about Gavin and Stacey, Dinnerladies, Only Fools and Horses. They all have scenes that could be borderline racist, are people going to examine everything on screen. What about books?

MayFayner · 10/06/2020 20:21

Things do date. Any Irish MNers here may have caught the repeat of “Bachelor’s Walk” on RTÉ recently?

I was delighted as it was of my time, maybe late 90s. Settled down to watch the first episode... they had one of the 30-something protagonists going out with schoolgirl Confused In one scene she takes off her uniform and gets into bed and shags him Hmm He gets her pregnant and brings her to get the MAP.

It wasn’t exactly the jaunty japes of men-about-town I remembered. I was actually amazed they aired it, it just seems so off, now.

BacklashStarts · 10/06/2020 20:21

Boosh has the cockney nutjob character - is it because if that?

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 20:22

Removing "black face" comedy = yes. It's simply not appropriate to use for comedy.

But removing anything which is set in a time during slavery is madness. Slavery happened; we cant forget that. Public, overt racism happened toward slaves and freemen, we cant forget that.

Films or books set in those times will have characters who think slaves are their right, they will have characters who believe in the Confederate cause, they will have characters who view black people as essentially working cattle. There will be characters like that because there were people like that. It's how it was. You cant just remove them all and forget about it. Its history. If it is portrayed in historical context then its telling a story; it isnt saying "this is what we agree with". If people are too thick to understand that something set in the past will have points of view from the past they just shouldnt be allowed to watch TV or read books.

Are we also going to remove every piece of media which portrays women as "their place is in the home and they shouldn't vote or work"? Because that view point is not longer acceptable but used to be totally the norm and widely shown as "the only acceptable way" in media from those times.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/06/2020 20:22

What's wrong with Boosh?! I'm trying to think but it's been a while since I watched it.

StarScream22 · 10/06/2020 20:24

What was wrong with boosh? Been a long time since I’ve watched but can’t remember if there was offensive stereotypes in it.

StarScream22 · 10/06/2020 20:24

Ooooh, actually I bet it will be Old Greg’s mangina

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 20:25

@MittensTheSerpent

If books or movies are set during times of slavery, will we no longer be able to see them? Horrible, racist things happened. They still happen. Should we just remove them from media and pretend they never did?

Characters set in those times will be racist. They will think slaves are totally fine because they are portraying a product of that time. It isnt racist; its showing racism as it was.

haverhill · 10/06/2020 20:27

Is it the Spirit of Jazz?

Notejode · 10/06/2020 20:29

May time to cancel Netflix?

BacklashStarts · 10/06/2020 20:30

Oh maybe the spirit of jazz. Doubt it’s the mangina bit.

The league is to do with papa lazzarou apparently

LST · 10/06/2020 20:32

Ah man I love the boosh!

africansassenach · 10/06/2020 20:34

Is it time for us to explain again that creating characters specifically to mock the race is what is offensive?

Are you really not getting through?

A film can still be about slavery, colonial Britain or be about racism without being offensive. There's a difference.

Accept that some beloved British programmes are racist and offensive. Think about why you are so desperate to hold on to your humour at the expense of others. These programmes perpetuate the prejudice that we are fighting.

Be kind.

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 20:38

@africansassenach

If that was aimed at me, my comment was about gone with the wind as it feels like they're just going to start removing any historical movies with racism in them, which is wrong.

Removing modern "comedy" which created stereotypical characters to mock is totally fine.
