Coming to the mat in May

Poisonwood · 01/05/2025 12:25

The year is flying in. My yoga aims for May are to do a short focus on abs/core every day, and work on strength to help my joints. I had to cancel going to class today as had a tooth out at dentist, but did a 30min hatha SB video before going, plus 5 minutes of plank, reverse plank and tree plank.

@happytobemrsg I’m glad you enjoyed your yin class. I have my first one on Sunday, I’m looking forward to it.

Thanks for the new thread @Poisonwood!

No yoga for me today as I have another Yin class booked for tomorrow. Then I’ll be back on daily practice until around the classes next week. Do feel I need something for my neck/shoulders though so might try & squeeze something in but I have a busy day today

Poisonwood · 01/05/2025 17:14

YWA has a nice 15 min practice for Neck and Shoulder Relief or you could always try some in-bed yoga @happytobemrsg 😊.

Hello what does SB mean. Here for this thread:)

Poisonwood · 02/05/2025 19:19

Hi @hellothegrrreeeen SB is Sarah Beth Yoga. 😊

I’ve had an unexpectedly busy day but managed a 30 minute free flow I made up and then wished I’d written down as it was good and I had immediately forgotten what I did 😂.

I’m waiting excitedly for the postman as I treated myself to a new mat…definitely need one in the living room and one in the bedroom lol. It’s a Liforme, and the alignment aids look useful.

Thank you for the new thread, May already!
I was excited to start the SB May calendar but Day 1 wasn't live when I was on my mat at 7am so I caught up on the 5 min ones I hadn't done from April calendar.
Did Day 2 this morning, nice 15 min flow with half camel which was different.
I only managed up to Day 3 of YWA True, I just find it too chatty after doing SB for a while, and the chat makes it a bit slow at times. I love Adrienne but I think it depends which practice.
@hellothegrrreeeen welcome!

Poisonwood · 02/05/2025 22:17

I know exactly what you mean @Jumbojem. I do like her Fuego and Tranquilo practices a lot still, they are minimal cues.

OP posts:
Poisonwood · 03/05/2025 11:15

Did a Brett Larkin practice, 75min advanced heart opening flow. Wow it was good. Felt drunk afterwards 😂.

50 minute Yin class yesterday with my favourite teacher. It was lovely but my groin is so tight!! Found any wide knee Childs pose really difficult. Any advice? I was born with hip dysplasia so my hips can be a little stiff but I don’t think that would affect my groin?

This morning I did YWA Prana Day 6. I stupidly forgot that Day 6 always meant abs 🤦🏻‍♀️ it was hard!!

I do find the SB channel a bit confusing as I only saw 5 minute videos. Is there a course I should do?

Jumbojem · 03/05/2025 19:34

Do you have the SB app or just on YouTube @happytobemrsg ? On the app there is either the calendar and for April they were all 5 minute ones but also on the homepage there are a number of "courses" either by type e.g toning, flow, yin etc or (I think) by length. There is also a "beginners" course which I've not looked at but from what I've seen mentioned may go in-depth into the poses more.
Not so sure about YouTube, there was a 30 day 10 mins a day one she had in January. I thought it would still be there. I am just doing the calendar (more or less) as otherwise I spend ages faffing about deciding what to do.
No yoga for me today, exhausted myself doing some heavy gardening work followed by a big curry. Aiming to get up a bit earlier tomorrow and get it done before breakfast. If I don't do it first thing it tends to not happen. Maybe I should try some of the bre bed yoga after all?

Poisonwood · 03/05/2025 21:59

@happytobemrsg can you ask for a physio referral? A chat with them about your hips plus groin, and what movement they recommend, would be good. I love chatting yoga with them.
@Jumbojem pre bed can be really relaxing, might improve your sleep which is always good.

Tomorrow I have my first full 60 min yin class, I’ve only ever done it combined with power before. Slightly nervous re my joints but my teacher knows that I’ll move (discreetly) if I need to.

Poisonwood · 04/05/2025 22:41

Well that was a nice class. Different, definitely. Appreciated my teacher giving me a few alternative suggestions within some holds. It’s only once a month (donation based for Gaza, rather than her standard classes) and I think I’ll continue them even if I don’t do much yin between times.

Tomorrow it’s 1.5hr Ashtanga class.

Found you! Have been off the mat since December pretty much. Hoping to get myself back into the habit with some short practices and by heading outside.

Poisonwood · 05/05/2025 19:46

Hi @PatienceOfEngels how are you? I love short practices, can you manage any in the early morning (I know mornings can often be chaos lol) as it gets it done for the day and leaves you feeling better during the day too? I’d love to do some outside, but my neighbours are not peaceful….i do have miles of deserted sandy shore though so I’ve not really any excuse!

Class was cancelled last minute tonight, luckily before I started driving. Did a 60 min Brett Larkin “sweaty yoga workout” instead, and it definitely was…the final twists were a joy to reach lol.

I'm doing much better after 2 weeks holiday to unwind thanks @Poisonwood . Back to work tomorrow!

I tried the rehab for the CorePlay last night and didn't make it all the way through. I think I am going to try and get early on days DH is working as he leaves at 6:15 and the kids aren't up till 7 so I'll have some peace to get a short practice in.

Poisonwood · 06/05/2025 17:48

@PatienceOfEngels that sounds like a good plan. I did a 30min core/sun A&B this morning and have just done a 30min yoga sculpt one too.

SB hips and shoulder stretch today for me. Lovely after a couple of days spent sat at a desk for far too long.
My hamstring has been playing up on runs lately so it's good to stretch it but I need to mindful of not over stretching as then it seems to hurt more. There is a 60 min Breathe one on the SB calendar for this week, might try and get up early enough to give that one a go tomorrow.

Poisonwood · 07/05/2025 19:17

@Jumbojem it’s hard at times balancing stretching/overstretching isn’t it.

My hips are feeling really achy today, did a 30min hatha hip flow and going to have a bath, see if that helps.

Poisonwood · 08/05/2025 21:08

Lovely 75min vinyasa class today. She pulled me up a little on dumping in to my joints rather than using my muscles, which is important, so that was nice.

OP posts:
Poisonwood · 09/05/2025 22:53

New mat came. Very excited. Boy does it grip! Which completely changes for the better the way my muscles have to work as there’s less “give” in a pose…love it.

60min Charlie Follows practice. Great all rounder.

OP posts:
Jumbojem · 09/05/2025 23:37

@Poisonwood what mat did you get? I have a decathlon one and have recently found it not as grippy as I'd like, especially when hands get sweaty.
I did the 60 min SB Breath practice from the calendar (it was meant to be Tuesday I think). Was surprised when she said this is the only down dog at 10 mins in and really glad when we finally got to sit on the mat and do bridge pose at 50 mins in. I thought it was going to be more yin but was a lot of triangle, reverse warrior, goddess, crescent moon. So my legs were pretty tired! I did enjoy it and time went fairly quickly really but I did feel an element of guilt spending an hour doing yoga for some reason.

Poisonwood · 11/05/2025 16:22

@Jumbojem that sounds a lovely practice, and it will have done you a lot of good. I’ve been really aware at times of the ‘guilt’ and it’s helped me realise how subverted my needs had become by everyone else’s…family needs, societal expectations, my own feelings of never being enough just by being. But we ARE enough, and we DO deserve the best health and well-being. Yoga is now prioritised here and I think we’re all the better for it.

My new mat is a Liforme that my children banded together and bought me for Mother’s Day (they do their own day each year, May 4th)…it was an enormous surprise.

Just meditation yesterday, today 60 min Sarah Beth SHINE. I did full Bird or Paradise which was nice as I can remember thinking months ago there was no ruddy chance 😆.

Ashtanga class tonight, only 3 of us plus teacher and it’s a nice vibe. Did my first ever teaching today: my adult daughter and a couple of her friends are looking for a yoga practice especially for supporting their taekwondo, so focus on flexibility and balance. I was so surprised when they asked me (imposter syndrome lol) and spent ages designing a sequence I think will benefit them…but gosh I was nervous!

30 min power, too hot for any more.

Nice hour of Kundalini, it really boosted and then calmed the energy well.

Lovely 75min vinyasa flow class. Practiced crow as well, still struggling with a couple of things - getting my knees on arms rather than shins, and rounding my back. Teacher suggested I practice with bare arms to get a better grip.
