Why don't we play as UK in the World Cup? Why do we get 4 teams when everyone else gets just the one? It would bring an end to anyone but England sentiment.

I didn't say it was a stupid question, just that the answer is not particularly exciting or deep. But then I don't think the OP actually wanted an answer to the question, they wanted to debate "Should the 4 constituent nations of the UK have separate football teams" but that's not what they actually asked. The answer to the "why" is just down to the history of the sport and the preference of the organising body rather than some kind of political statement.

It's not just football of course. Lots of sports have separate international teams for some competitions and a combined GB team for others. A lot of it will be to do with logistics. Some competitions want more teams, others less. The Olympics is the biggest sporting event in the world covering a very large number of sports and just about every country in the world wants to enter a team, but there's not enough space for everyone so they have to have limits.
The Commonwealth Games is obviously only open to Commonwealth countries and has a bit of a different ethos so I imagine they want more, smaller countries to participate both because it makes it a more interesting event and because it gives athletes who might otherwise never get to attend a major international event, especially a multisport one, a chance to do so.

You're going to have actual kittens when you realise Scotland and Northern Ireland have completely different legal systems to England and Wales, not to mention each of Wales, Scotland and NI has a devolved government. That happened because they are different countries.

Maybe we could get four acts in the Eurovision Song Contest, then at least someone from the UK wouldn't finish last 😆
