5 days in office

Would yo consider this 5 days in the office no hybrid working, a 40 hour working week 9 to 6 every day with an hour for lunch.

I've been hybrid for last few years and don't want to do 5 days on site...plus the longer hours.

Been looking for work for 8 months and it is dire...getting desperate....

If you were that desperate I think you’d take it no hesitation.
I wouldn’t be interested in doing that now, I’m hybrid doing 2 days a week in the office but if I lost my job and dh couldn’t afford to pay the bills on his own then I’d take anything that was offered. Well, not ANYTHING obviously! But a sensible office job, of course.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/02/2026 09:57

If I was desperate, yes. While still looking for something more flexible.

girliepop · 24/02/2026 09:58

For me it would depend how long the commute was. I would take it personally and be on the search for hybrid roles. But I understand it’s a very tough adjustment to go from hybrid to 5 days in office!

purplecorkheart · 24/02/2026 09:58

Yes, if I was desperate but I would still be looking for something else.

Rubberduck01 · 24/02/2026 09:59

Personally i wouldn’t and I don’t have any children at home and if I had it’d definitely be no.

macaroonmayhem · 24/02/2026 09:59

Depends on your situation - for me, absolutely not.

stackhead · 24/02/2026 10:01

Hard no from me, unless I was already unemployed, it's a shit job market and beggars can't be choosers. But you can guarantee after 6 months I'd be back on the job market.

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 10:04

I'm not at stage on not paying bills as I have a partner.
It is not being filled as not many want 5 days onsite plus a 40 hour week...it does not appeal as I have been hybrid 2 days in office.
If it was temp/ftc i'd go for it but it is a perm role so not so easy to just walk away from it is 3 months notice...am discussing it with agency re being put forward and wanted to get views.
My gut says no as I can't imagine being sat in an office 9 to 6 for 5 days on the trot...they are not flexible at all is what agent said hence they can't fill it...

Yes, if things are getting desperate, imagine how you'd feel if you turned it down and then couldn't find anything else for months. It wasn't so long ago that this was completely normal and still is for many.

Elbowpatch · 24/02/2026 10:08

Take it and keep looking for another job.

Measley · 24/02/2026 10:09

How long have you been looking?

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 24/02/2026 10:11

I'd have to be absolutely desperate. Surely if they can't fill the role, that should tell them they need to change what they're offering?

Elbowpatch · 24/02/2026 10:13

Measley · 24/02/2026 10:09

Last line of the OP!

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 10:15

Yep. it was the norm pre covid years but things have changed....I wouldn't mind if there was some flex but somewhere that has zero flexibility ...they also won't allow an earlier start to finish earlier...hence why this is still available, I think it was filled but has come up again after a few months. Probably someone took it and then left.

Useful to get people's views though. It is going to be a no for me I think as I would be out of the house from 8 to 7 every day which I think I'be be fed up of very quickly...

You would think so but no.

There are so many candidates looking, it is an employers market.

I'd be surprised if the 3 months notice kicks in before you pass your probation period. Go for it, and also keep looking. You never know what you'll find in the meantime, or even if you'll enjoy it when you get there.

Terriblytwee · 24/02/2026 10:22

No way. I’d never go back for five full days.

ldnmusic87 · 24/02/2026 10:25

If I was desperate and not getting other offers - yes. Otherwise, no.

AnAppleAWeek · 24/02/2026 10:33

Depends on the salary. I prefer flexibility but I have a price to get me in the office 5 days a week.

onelumporthree · 24/02/2026 10:42

Until very recently those working hours in an office would have been entirely normal and what was expected of employees.

user2848502016 · 24/02/2026 10:47

No but if I’d been out of work for 8 months and desperate probably yes - but keep looking for hybrid roles

redskyAtNigh · 24/02/2026 10:49

I think it's flexibility rather than 5 days in the office that would be the decider for me. If you can't ever come in early and work late, or work a morning at home because you're (e.g.) waiting for the plumber, it would be too restrictive for me.

Is there any indication that actual working practice might be more flexible than they are suggesting? I would take it if I was desperate and hope to prove myself indispensible so I can negotiate the odd bits of flex.

Figgygal · 24/02/2026 10:53

If I was working and had no financial pressures to move no way.
8 hour days in office - how retro
I work hybrid but only one day a week from office as I'm part time that is invaluable to me

JHound · 24/02/2026 10:53

I quite simply refuse to do 5 days in the office. If my job mandates it at that point is when I will focus all my spare energy on finding a new role no matter how long it takes.

JHound · 24/02/2026 10:55

That said I cannot tell if you have a job now. If I really needed the cash / a job, I would of course take it.

And keep looking.

But the lack of flexibility would kill it for me even without hybrid working. My first graduate position was zero flexibility on the employer side. I swore I would never do a job with zero flexibility again and I never have.
