5 days in office

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 09:53

Would yo consider this 5 days in the office no hybrid working, a 40 hour working week 9 to 6 every day with an hour for lunch.

I've been hybrid for last few years and don't want to do 5 days on site...plus the longer hours.

Been looking for work for 8 months and it is dire...getting desperate....

No id never do five days office again and that it a very long day these days, no from me if keep looking.

Take it and keep looking for another job.

This, surely! I definitely would. My bills don't pay themselves, and I like being able to eat.

Until very recently those working hours in an office would have been entirely normal and what was expected of employees.

Exactly.

I do it (9 - 5.30), I don't hate it but would like some flexibility. Looking for hybrid roles now.

winterwonder1 · 24/02/2026 11:13

I couldn't do it anymore. Plus, I'd think they'd be inflexible employers on other issues too.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/02/2026 11:13

Are they paying top whack for this (shitty) job? If it was £40k plus I’d consider it

Wonkywalker · 24/02/2026 11:19

OP you say you can pay your bills as you have a partner so they are shouldering your share of the bills - presumably if you have been looking for work for 8 months they have been doing so for some time.

I think you need to ask your partner how they feel about the job as in my view they have a right to some input if they are financially supporting you - and you need to know how long they are prepared to do so while you wait for a WFH or hybrid role.

Personally I would take the job rather than continue to expect my partner to shoulder all the bills - or take a lower paid local job so you are contributing while looking for your ideal job.

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 11:32

There is no pressure from my partner, it is me for my sanity and wanting to be earning/to be useful.

I'm looking at taking something local and lower paid to have some earnings at the least.

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2026 11:53

I'd take it, but I'm an oddball who doesn't like working from home and much prefers going into the office. I have some flexibility if I need it though, which is great.

voidcat · 24/02/2026 12:20

I do 40hrs a week in the office and it’s not too bad but I work 9-5

ExcellentDaydream · 24/02/2026 12:32

The total lack of time flexibility is worse than the 5 days in the office which I wouldn't mind but I'm another who doesn't like WFH, if I ever did have to take a hybrid job I'd be wanting at least three days in the office and would never go for fully remote.

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 12:36

It's the no flexibility at all 5 days on site and set hours of 9 to 6 every day (no flex) ...hence why it is not being filled. Their attitude seems very rigid...I'm passing on it. That rigidity wouldn't work for me now.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/02/2026 13:02

What is the commute? If it’s local I wouldn’t mind too much.

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 13:11

An hour each way; so out of the house from 8 til 7... 5 days a week.

gototogo · 24/02/2026 13:12

If you need a job and that’s the deal then it’s down to you. It’s what we all did in the past

Greenwitchart · 24/02/2026 13:13

Never.

I have long term health issue and working from home or hybrid working allows me to manage them and avoid complications and burnouts.

The type of work I do can be done remotely most of the time anyway and I would never sacrifice my health for office presenteism and micro-management.

CloakedInGucci · 24/02/2026 13:15

Yes if desperate but I’d be very reluctant.

Not just because I like hybrid, but because insisting on 5 days a week when it’s not really necessary suggests a certain type of management attitude that I’m not keen on.

MimiSunshine · 24/02/2026 13:23

Pre Covid working patterns are 7 years old now. It’s not really applicable when people say ‘bit we all did it before’.

yes there some jobs that can’t be hybrid / remote but many many office jobs can be.
i wouldn’t go that job as the company sound really rigid and I’d imagine it’s all about sitting at your desk the longest.

Exactly I agree...the comments saying "well we all did it before" are irrelevant now...life has changed/moved on.

Yep the rigidity is off putting and all about being seen to be there.

My work can be done remote and/or hybrid. It seems like micromanaging.

You don't actually sound desperate, so no.

DeathBanana · 24/02/2026 13:32

shhblackbag · 24/02/2026 11:09

Exactly.

It’s not “very recently” though is it? It’s 6 years. Plus a great deal of places did hybrid prior to that too

NotDarkGothicMama · 24/02/2026 13:40

If it was local to me and significantly better paid than my current hybrid role then maybe. Long commute and/or same/worse pay: no way.

Carrotsandgrapes · 24/02/2026 13:44

I would only consider 5 days in office if I were absolutely desperate or if they were paying me significantly more. And it would have to be significant to cover the extra time/money/stress of commuting.

I'd also be very wary of the culture of a company that wants people in 5 days a week. To me that suggests the company is old fashioned, inflexible and authoritarian.

I think letting people WFH is an easy benefit for employers to offer. It costs them little, but it's worth a lot to the employees.

mrsmacmc · 24/02/2026 13:47

Desperation yes as in I need it to pay bills but if you don’t NEED it I would walk on by. Employers need to wake up and realise that hybrid is the way forward if the role can be done in that way before the ‘oh XYZ roles can’t be done remotely’ pile on me.

WaIIy · 24/02/2026 13:48

It's only what we always did before tho
