5 days in office

ilovebrie8 · 24/02/2026 09:53

Would yo consider this 5 days in the office no hybrid working, a 40 hour working week 9 to 6 every day with an hour for lunch.

I've been hybrid for last few years and don't want to do 5 days on site...plus the longer hours.

Been looking for work for 8 months and it is dire...getting desperate....

I've been trying to fill a job that is 5 days in the office and its been really hard. Everybody wants some hybrid, but this role has aspects where you are covering reception, greeting various visitors through the day and assisting several senior people who are in the office and they want somebody based with them. Whilst some tasks can be done remotely, you never know when the face to face stuff comes up so it can't all be saved for a day that is in the office and is often urgent so can't wait and there is nobody else to cover. I don't think we're wrong for wanting somebody in the office 5 days but maybe we need to do more to make people want to be in an office! Me personally I don't do well with long periods WFH, but the odd day is lovely if I spending the whole day on video calls or have a report to write where I need quiet.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2026 14:02

I like working from the office. I like the social construct of it and distance it provides between work and home. However, I'm only a 30 minute drive from work.

Nincompoo · 24/02/2026 14:07

I can’t imagine anything worse!

It’s not “very recently” though is it? It’s 6 years. Plus a great deal of places did hybrid prior to that too

Fair. I guess I just have a different view than the OP. I wouldn't feel comfortable not contributing to bills for this long when I had the opportunity to change the situation.

MidnightMeltdown · 24/02/2026 14:17

No, not unless I was utterly desperate. I’ve never had a job where I needed to be in the office 5 days a week, not even pre-covid. I honestly don’t understand how anyone could do this and have a life, unless they have a stay at home partner to take care of all the chores.

Any job can be filled if the pay reflects what is expected of an employee!

The problem is that jobs that require you to be in the office never take commuting time into account. This can easily result in people having to do an extra 10 unpaid hours a week, compared to wfh. That’s a huge amount of free time to give up. The salary has to make up for it.

ImFineItsAllFine · 24/02/2026 14:37

I'd take it if truly desperate but my worry would be what else they might be super rigid about (dress code, unpaid overtime, problems booking annual leave?). As pp have said it screams micromanagement.

Also depends on the salary, I'd need compensating for that amount of presenteeism.

How very rude and condescending!

I have used savings thus far and I live with my partner who chips in…I’ve done it for him when he had to take a long break due to health issues.

Why a load of tosh you’ve written.

Agree. I’m an older millennial (almost 40) and have never had a job that required 5 days a week in an office. We’ve got a couple of generations now who just aren’t used to that.

I get that people did in the old days, but salaries were much better relative to the cost of living then.

JHound · 24/02/2026 14:49

The “we did it before” is such a stupid argument.

Working culture has always changed and evolved.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 24/02/2026 15:44

Only if it was a choice between that job or not being able to eat or pay bills, otherwise I'd look for something more flexible.

If the role isn't being filled because of their lack of flexibility that's a red flag to me.

Yes, sounds like that role just doesn't pay enough. Though often not much the poor sod stuck with the recruiting can do about that!

ThirdStorm · 24/02/2026 17:27

@CommonlyKnownAs and @Therescathairinmybath Totally agree the pay should reflect the requirements/responsibilities and I promise you this one does!

Hmm, the market may be saying otherwise. If the role has to be in person then so be it, but sometimes that does require an uplift if you want someone decent. You'll know the sector better than I do of course, but it may be something that needs considered if you've no luck.

Mumof1andacat · 24/02/2026 17:42

Do you have to take a hour lunch? Could it just be 30 mins and you leave at 5:30pm

ainsleysanob · 24/02/2026 17:47

I have 5 days in the office. 8.30 - 17.00, 30 minutes lunch. I however work for a company that don’t bat an eyelid if you need to nip out to pick your kids up, you don’t need to book AL for anything to do with your kids such as school events etc or medical appointments for yourself/kids and I haven’t actually finished later than 4.30 for months! The only rule is no WFH.

Also, I wouldn’t consider WFH if it was an option anyway.

Clearly not, if nobody wants the job! If you offered an extra £10k you might find a good employee willing to work for you.

beadystar · 24/02/2026 18:19

I wouldn’t change job for this unless the money was incredible. I love hybrid. However, if I had no job at all I would take it, put the head down for a while then start looking at new opportunities that include hybrid, and/or see if I could impress them enough to be allowed a day or two at home.

reinventionn · 24/02/2026 18:24

onelumporthree · 24/02/2026 10:42

Until very recently those working hours in an office would have been entirely normal and what was expected of employees.

I’d hardly call 6 years ago very recent.

Apologies then. But you didn't mention that in any updates. You said he was paying. I'm not a mind reader, and you would have been told not to bankroll a partner.

Correct… you are not a mind reader but you are very judgemental…and way off with your conclusions!

I wouldn't. I definitely wouldn't work until 6 either.

Marmalademorning · 24/02/2026 20:38

I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. That sounds utterly miserable and life is too short.

How do you do chores when wfh. When I work from home, I work and meet my contractual obligations.
