Hi OP. Having gone through similar recently I’m guessing you had only a couple of hours sleep last night! Just some further information from my experience that may be useful to you:

My EL went straight back and challenged the legal fees allowance which was agreed straight away. That allowed me not to clock watch during the appointment. He went through the SA line by line explaining what they had done wrong or right in terms of the law. I secured a copy of what my reference and leaving email would say and negotiated extra tax free pay via EL. The initial offer was essentially the same as stat redundancy so they weren’t offering me anything I wasn’t already entitled to in reality.

SA are becoming a normallised way of doing redundancy without the process (and signalling to customers/competitors things are not rosy) so don’t doubt yourself that you have done something wrong/said something wrong. That has been the hardest part for me. I’ve had a lot of unsettling work based dreams.

Your settlement date is the last day of employment so you can get contributions based JSA from the next day and you can apply online. This is not Universal Credit JSA so savings/settlement payments are irrelevant. It is based on your NI contributions. Your original thread mentioned you sometimes worked outside of the UK I think so this may or may not be applicable but may benefit other readers. Although it’s not worth a lot versus your salary it could allow you access to National Careers Service ‘fast track’ advice and higher end training courses being paid for by a government scheme for redundancy. My claims advisor was also very kind and helpful. If your employment history has been fantastic for the last 15 years, they generally aren’t wanting you to get a min wage job from the off. It is down to advisor discretion I believe but I was given two months to apply for same level jobs. It is for a max of six months and if you are unavailable for work e.g. holiday you will need to sign off for a period of time.

To echo another poster, I too secured a new job with a better title and more money. I was half heartedly looking to move anyway so a swift kick up the butt was what I needed. Breathe. The settlement money has bought you time to get your head around it and find a new (better!) position.

She had under 2 years service. Literally no bargaining power whatsoever. They had already offered a decent settlement. If they give her another month she will have done extraordinarily well.

Yes in theory.. they are also letting me go 3 days before I hit 2 years... I thought it was 2 weeks. Plus only woman in the team.

@CrazyPenguin101 This is why the comment about ‘friends’ from the boss is BS really. It’s a business contract between you & the employer. That comment is designed to encourage you to go quietly like a good little girl.

Hang on. You need legal advice here! Someone needs to look at this more carefully since there is a quirky rule which could apply to this scenario

Dandydog84 · 22/01/2026 10:12

Have you made any progress in actually trying to get another job? Like contacting a recruitment agency?

But the other male members of the team all have completely different jobs to you. They are very technical you said.

Yes I have. Ive got ex employer offering me small contract. Not massive, only 8 hrs per month but £800 so thats income. It really is making me think maybe going at it under my name might be an option instead of corporate again.

Possibly! They quoted the date in the offer. If I get what I asked for im happy to go off, I dont need any more hassle really.

Yes they do. But mothership has those teams too and yet they are not been made redundant. Mothership country is known for much lower employment of women vs majority of Europe.

The counteroffer from her POV would be based on the job market. She has counter-offered too low based on her needs. The employer can use the “under 2 years” line in their counteroffer back, but it should not be part of the reasoning she gives for the value of her counteroffer.

What about contacting the head hunter presuming a recruiter?

Do you honestly think that your boss is a sexist pig who has singled you out because you’re a woman?
If you are being honest
or is this drama loving mumsnetters trying to hype you up?

Yes I mentioned in the prior thread that the timing potentially gave you something to fire a shot across their bows, but then they offered a generous severance package, far higher than statutory would have been in another two weeks. I’m not convinced about the potential for sex discrimination given that yesterday you said your job was completely different to the males, a one off. They aren’t making the only female redundant, they’re making the only ‘your job title’ redundant. You said yourself a pool approach wouldn’t be appropriate as you can’t do their job.

Dont think its my boss at all. Its all very much motherships decision.

Let’s get the one woman out?

or…. Let’s make this role redundant that is very different from any other role.

Let this go. Just focus on contacting contacts and recruiters

Please stop going off. I’m not going to attempt to sue or do anything of the kind—I’m not interested in that. They gave me a generous package, and I simply asked for an extra month. It’s not going to break the bank for them; they’re worth over 30 billion across all entities. If I don’t get it, I don’t get it—that’s the end of it. I’m navigating this as best I can, and it’s all unknown territory for me.

What I don’t need, however, is negativity. Everything is raw and scary right now. I may have to cancel one DC birthday party and possibly even postpone dog surgery, all while my DM is due for surgery any day. Please stop trying to make it sound like I’m an ungrateful little girl who should just accept whatever I’m given. Ive worked my arse off, ive recovered thousands of gbp that would have been missed, I sorted a lot of paperwork that supported the acquisition etc.

No negativity

my point is don’t get bogged down in side issues that won’t go anywhere

Focus squarely on future and getting another job

good luck

A bit of indulgence to get through such a rough day it's ok, but spending a whole afternoon eating junk food could be setting a precedent that has long-term devastating consequences. Try not to make a habit out of it.
Remember that we are what we eat. You need to ensure that your mind is sharp and your body is healthy to get through the challenge ahead.
Take care of yourself and I wish you all the luck in your job hunt.

Nice bit of mansplaining there.

lovemetomybones · 22/01/2026 12:15

This is a life changing moment with a high level of uncertainty. You need time to process this, time to make future plans- so if you want to eat junk food for a day, a week a month you go for it! You put your health wellbeing at the core of your decisions do the things that help you overcome these stressful times and you decide!

Yes indeed, finance consultancy/ accounting /reporting / year end etc 😊 Might be a solution whilst looking for a job.

It sounds to me like you are extremely qualified and it would be criminal and such a shame for you not to go for it full time yourself / grow your company/ eventually employ more staff / train staff / and be your own CEO . What a turn around that would be . You’re too qualified to work for someone else .
