My brother was recently made redundant. Your employer is supposed to pay for you to speak to a solicitor to run through what they are offering. to ensure your employer follows fair legal procedures, protects your rights (like proper notice/pay), helps challenge unfair selection or discrimination, negotiates enhanced packages or settlement agreements, and guides you through complex steps like ACAS conciliation to potentially save your job or maximize your exit compensation.

Penguin, PLEASE make sure you're getting good legal advice. I am on the other side of the table in these discussions and there is an art to this process - a good lawyer can often get you much more than you could get for yourself, without burning bridges. Shout if you need a recc.

For those who missed the update, in short all of them were late joining the meeting. They ripped the bandaid off immediately which was good. Confirmed it was due to restructure. Offered support and discussed settlement.

It was a shock even though I expected it.

The rest of the post was full of well wishes and advice about tacking settlement, process involved, confirming that I actually need a lawyer to review settlement and sign off on it (company is paying). Think that was all.

Take the legal advice being offered, by the way, it can't hurt at this point.

Best of luck to you going through this. Finance roles do come up, and you might find WFH roles with local government if you have a look if that's the important aspect.

If you need someone to look at your settlement agreement then PM me. It has to be signed off by a lawyer and you need to ensure they're doing everything properly.

One thing - I've left places before and they've had me back to do a bit of contracting when they realised they weren't really ready.

Try not to completely burn bridges if you can (although I realise the temptation is huge)

I think the way your company handled the scheduling of the meeting was bloody awful.

I'm also sorry to hear the news but I can see now why they were a bit vague, because you don't want to tell somebody up front they're being made redundant because that's what the meeting's for.

I've worked in a few places where you just grab your stuff and leave once they've told you and you're on garden leave for your notice period. They don't want salespeople/senior management taking client details with them for use in their next job or so they can network/canvass for jobs or do anything malicious like change their password before leaving.

Get good advice and good luck, it can be a pretty tough process x

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here but they have to pay for reasonable legal expenses too. Don’t be paying for it yourself. You can appoint your own legal advice and don’t have to take their lawyer.

(as far as I know and has happened in the last two redundancies I’ve had)

You will be ok and I have a gut feeling this is going to become a good thing that’s happened to you . You’ll get another job , possibly better and you’ll have a pot of cash you didn’t expect in the bank . Fingers crossed .You certainly do deserve it .

6 months pay for 2 years service is very good. I wish you all the best looking for another job. Do ask for a written reference plus ask anyone you are friendly with if they are willing to be a referree if hr is transferring, can be hard to get one I found

Due to restructuring, my department is up for redundancy. One of us has to go and we're about to start the process of fighting against loved and trusted colleagues for our jobs. It's the pits.

Have they told you how much they will contribute towards legal costs? If not, please check this before you go racking up costs as they probably wont pay for lots of solicitor appointments. Especially because they are being generous as it is, due to you not having 2 years service and them not needing to engage in a redundancy process. (Apologies if I've missed a post re any protected characteristics.)
