If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?

Lotto Good Luck GIF

If I won the lottery... I'd finally find a balance between work and kids!
Okay, imagine this: I win the lottery today. What’s the first thing I’d do? No, it’s not splurging on a holiday or buying a mansion (although, sure, that sounds nice too). The first thing I’d do is hire help to take the pressure off balancing work and childcare.
Honestly, it's such a struggle trying to juggle both—working from home with a toddler (or even just having them around when you’re trying to focus) is impossible. I feel like I’m always half-trying to work and half-worried about whether they’re getting the attention they need. If I had the freedom to step back and really focus on one thing at a time, I’d be a much better worker and a much better mum.
I’d get a cleaner, a nanny, maybe even a personal assistant (why not dream big?). Then, I’d finally be able to enjoy both my work and my time with my kids without feeling guilty or overwhelmed.
Anyone else daydream about what they’d do with a little extra help or time? What’s your “first thing” if you won the lottery?

£2M.

No big expensive house move possible.

So:

  1. Turn the heating up
  2. Think about the environmental damage and turn it down a bit again
  3. Order a takeaway.
  4. Look for a new car
  5. Get the hedges cut by someone else (This might be on the cards anyway as it's the chore no one likes!)
  6. buy some new clothes and trainers. (Again I don't need a lottery win but I hate buying clothes)
  7. Consider getting a cleaner to come in and do the kitchen and bathroom and vaccing the hall.
  8. Erm consider going to see our friend in America but even with a lottery win the US is not appealing.

Keep on doing what I’m doing to be honest. Pay off everyone’s mortgages and make sure friends and family were taken care of, not worry about bills anymore, then enjoy being able to pick and choose the work I took instead of taking on every job that comes. And be able to donate my skills for free for those that need it.

Oh, and employ someone to book all my travel tickets. God I hate that.

Resign, husband would sell his business and we’d move house. Would stay in the general area where we live but a detached house in a more desirable road. Prob get young adult DCs started on housing ladder as well depending on how much we win.

Get all nagging medical issues sorted privately.

Phone work and say I’m never coming back.

I wouldn’t even do that. Post the keys through the door. Change phone number. Fuck them.

Dutchhouse14 · 17/09/2025 17:39

Have a cup of tea!

Then phone my husband, children and close family.

Then resign!

Then work out how much I could sensibly give to DC and close family and friends whilst still having enough for a wonderful financially stress free life for me and DH.

I'd like a flat in london
And a house in Cornwall

And lots of beautiful diamond jewellery.

Oh and a new car

Possibly a face lift as my face is sagging.

Oh and I'd have my garden professionally landscaped and planted.

And buy some lovely Art

And go on safari.

I am now in full dreaming mode 😂

I think I’m similar. Definitely the first thing woukd be a cup of tea and I might book the local chap who cleans ovens to come around. DH has been promising to clean it for way too long.

I would book a lovely holiday but not immediately. Need to let the news sink in first.

Fairyladyonwheels · 17/09/2025 18:37

It would be an incredible feeling, I would buy a house, set my children up so they never have to struggle. I wouldn't tell anyone part from my family. I would wind down the business and focus on projects I really like. Book a lovely holiday and invest. I would make sure my parents are sorted. Money really does buy happiness and it would solve all my problems at the moment.

MixingMemoryAndDesire · 17/09/2025 18:40

Pay off my debts.

Cheshire71 · 17/09/2025 19:32

If I won enough it would be handing in my notice for early retirement 😀

You might be waiting sometime, a neighbour had a big win in the spring, only just got the pay out.

Can I have that job! I love booking travel!

Letstheriveranswer · 17/09/2025 19:45

Leave the UK and go somewhere with more sunshine and not work just to pay bills and barely make it through each month.

MissRaspberry · 18/09/2025 17:22

I'd definitely buy a new home for me and the kids away from all the shitty drama that goes on where we currently live. Buy passports and take them on a dream holiday. Put some away for the kids futures say if they wanted to go to university or buy their first homes.

😮 That’s a long time to wait! Did they tell your neighbour why the wait was so long?

Gettingbysomehow · 18/09/2025 17:48

Give up work, give my house to a struggling single parent and buy a big house on the Exmoor coast and a weekend flat in Glastonbury.

They were told that it was often up to six months, due to lack of staff

AquaShark · 19/09/2025 08:19

Pay off the mortgage
Book some nice holidays
Top up savings accounts (boring I know)
Yes to a cleaner

I'm self employed and enjoy my job so may or may not quit, but I would definitely drop my hours so I can enjoy it without feeling knackered

pokewoman · 19/09/2025 10:38

Buy a house.

Go on holiday

MixedBananas · 21/09/2025 07:56

I would help pay off families debts so they could no longer slave away workong 16hrs a day. Inwould help my family abroad who are in poverty.
Donate to charities no.1 helping Palestinian families and then others in need.

The rest I would build our dream self sustaining home - Passive Hauss and live off grid. Have our own animals and grow our own food.

Give my kids the best education and thats it. The rest would invest into property and Gold. And for thr kids future a proper savings account and investments for them.

The only non sensible thing I would do is buy my Mum the bag she has dreamed of owning her whole life, Dior Lady Diana bag.

TranceNation · 21/09/2025 08:14

Book a holiday, probably Thailand. Then I'd realise I have zero holiday leave left until next year. Not sure if I could wait that long for a holiday with all that money in the bank even though I love my job. So probably quit my job 😁

TiredMummma · 21/09/2025 08:31

Sorry but how has your employer ok’d that? You can’t work and have kids at home! They are two jobs! You should be paying for childcare anyway - 24 hours funded at the moment?

I would absolutely though quit my job and do fun things with my time, travel etc

Joloman74 · 21/09/2025 13:00

I would book a month long holiday to the Maldives! Then whilst lying in the sun on the beach I would make a list of things I would want to do and who to treat!

babyboy520 · 22/09/2025 02:20

You’re honestly such a kind person, you’re really lovely.

With £1milion, I'd give each DC £250,000 to help them get on the property ladder. I would probably give some to DB as well.

Then I would then be phoning Trailfinders to book a luxury round the world holiday. Might take my mum.
