If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?

Lotto Good Luck GIF

If I won the lottery... I'd finally find a balance between work and kids!
Okay, imagine this: I win the lottery today. What’s the first thing I’d do? No, it’s not splurging on a holiday or buying a mansion (although, sure, that sounds nice too). The first thing I’d do is hire help to take the pressure off balancing work and childcare.
Honestly, it's such a struggle trying to juggle both—working from home with a toddler (or even just having them around when you’re trying to focus) is impossible. I feel like I’m always half-trying to work and half-worried about whether they’re getting the attention they need. If I had the freedom to step back and really focus on one thing at a time, I’d be a much better worker and a much better mum.
I’d get a cleaner, a nanny, maybe even a personal assistant (why not dream big?). Then, I’d finally be able to enjoy both my work and my time with my kids without feeling guilty or overwhelmed.
Anyone else daydream about what they’d do with a little extra help or time? What’s your “first thing” if you won the lottery?

Book a holiday to New England to see the leaves turn. First class flights.

Ooh yes me too.

Burningbud1981 · 17/09/2025 08:43

Depends how much I win ? 1 mil ? I couldn’t give up work. 1 mil just about buys you a house round here

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 17/09/2025 08:44

Quit my job. Even if I couldn’t give up work for life, I could do something I actually enjoy and don’t hate.

staringatthesun · 17/09/2025 08:44

Depends how much. A million would be a slightly bigger house, deposits for DCs houses and a trip to Japan. £2M plus would be a bit mor life changing and I'd probably take early retirement. What a nice daydream for a dreary Weds morning!

Danikm151 · 17/09/2025 08:45

Go to the bank withdraw about £5k in small notes. Get home - throw them up in the air and jump up and down in glee.

TroysMammy · 17/09/2025 08:50

I'd quit work immediately and give 3 colleagues money so they can quit too. The only reason being is that our workplace has become so toxic since 2 new members of staff joined and the Manager is hiding under the guise of wfh. It's a fucking joke.

RandomUsernameHere · 17/09/2025 08:50

If it was £1m I’d pay off the mortgage and go on amazing holidays but continue to work. If it was multiple millions I’d stop working.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 17/09/2025 08:51

Leave work, move to the area I want to live in, then have nice holidays and swan around 😊

Tipeetommeey · 17/09/2025 08:51

WasherWoman25 · 17/09/2025 06:14

Can you actually give up work with £1m? By the time you’ve bought a property (assuming you don’t already have one)?

I’d probably hand in my notice, book a holiday to think about the next steps and then likely look into a home with a small business to keep us busy and some income ticking over.

I don’t think you can give up work even if you have £1m after buying a house

Showerflowers · 17/09/2025 08:54

I’d go private for a surgery I need instead of this almost two year wait while in pain

DoAWheelie · 17/09/2025 09:03

Buy a power wheelchair and hop onto rightmove to find a more accessible property.

I've been assessed as needing a powerchair but as my flat is unsuitable for one the NHS won't provide one, only a manual. I can only push myself about 50 meters in a manual so while I can get around mostly ok at home I'm bored being stuck in all the time.

I'd find a nice accessible flat that has space for a ramp and is nearby some fun places to visit (maybe a cinema and a swimming pool!) and move ASAP.

I'd also hire a housekeeper to clean and cook as I am crap at doing both of those. I don't think I'd spend too much outside of that - just have a fun day out once or twice a week and continue like normal outside of that.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 17/09/2025 09:05

I think my husband would probably quit his job. He doesn’t enjoy his as much as I like mine, and works more hours but earns less. We could then massively reduce childcare. I’d probably shave a few hours off my working week and pay the mortgage off, get a cleaner, go on lots of lovely holidays and modernise the house. Put a bit away for the children and in savings, get new but not too flashy cars as ours are paid for but old. From the outside it probably wouldn’t look like we’d won £2m but that would be amazing.

Hummingbirdtree · 17/09/2025 09:06

Buy my children houses. Move to a nicer house myself. Set up trust funds . Buy a drop dead gorgeous ring. Get a personal chef and housekeeper and a cleaner.

FindingMeno · 17/09/2025 09:12

Oh, and reading other posts, I would definitely allocate some to a full private health check up, getting my teeth done, and a decadent fuck off holiday.

fivetriangulartrees · 17/09/2025 09:15

An FOI request revealed there's someone at my company on an annual salary of £2 million. It somehow puts a £2 million lottery win in a bit of a different light. Still wouldn't turn my nose up at it though. Very first thing I'd do is take the day off (how could you focus on work straight after that news?), go and choose a nice new notebook, sit in a cafe and start to make plans. So technically I guess the first thing I'd treat myself to is a notebook.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 17/09/2025 09:16

First thing I’d do would be to hire a cleaner to do really thorough deep cleaning of the whole house. Clean the mouldy cornice in the bathroom, wash the windows, scrub the woodwork/skirtings etc. Then I’d get all the carpets replaced.

Sdpbody · 17/09/2025 09:17

£1m, then we would have to continue to work.
£450k of the mortgage, £350k to pay for school fees up front. £200k in to full premium bonds for me and the kids. This would free up £6k a month for us so our standard of living would go up tonnes. Better holidays, eating out, taking day trips.

£10m, I would quite my job immediately.

FlowersInPots · 17/09/2025 09:18

I’d phone my manager from my first class flight and let her know that I quit!

In reality I’d do a handover because I like my team but I’d 100% be quitting my job.

I’d go on a very long holiday, come back and change things. Buy a bigger house, employ a cleaner (or 2) and just enjoy a nice year or so off. Then I’d maybe think about some sort of work but it would be very part time and based on something I enjoy.

I’d also be buying a house for my sister and helping family significantly.

ZiggyZowie · 17/09/2025 09:19

Get a cleaner , a gardener, a chef .

Pay for excellent carers for my disabled daughter

Pay for same for learning disabled daughters

Give each child a big pile money

Buy each of them a house

Get a makeover , clothes,makeup,hair

Go on holiday for first time since 2007.

NameChange23456790 · 17/09/2025 09:19

A million is nothing nowadays even to create an investment income. I’d need a solid £5 mil to give up work.

Bushwoolie · 17/09/2025 09:25

Buy a takeaway so I didn't have to cook 4 different dinners because everyone in the house is autistic but not the same flavour of autistic so I can no longer make JUST ONE FREAKING MEAL for dinner.

Astrabees · 17/09/2025 09:33

I’d go into Brora and buy everything in every colour in my size.

SeaAndStars · 17/09/2025 09:34

CuddlesKovinsky · 17/09/2025 08:41

I love my job, but I'd be doing it from a gorgeous little cottage by the sea with room for donkeys and chickens and no neighbours. I would have more time to focus on my job because I'd never lift a paintbrush or push a hoover ever again... And I'd have top-level private healthcare.

Little mix of fantasy and practical there! 😄

Being nosy here. What is your job?

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 17/09/2025 09:39

DH and I could retire on £1m as we've finally paid off our mortgage. We are 58 and 63. We could live comfortably on the interest. I've said upthread what I would do.

If it was £2m then I'd have the kitchen redone, and the bathrooms. I'd give the DC money for house deposits. I'd book a lovely trip to Costa Rica. I'd buy a new car to replace my old banger. DH has a 17 year old car but not sure he will replace it unless it finally dies as he's very attached to it God knows why.

Harriet9955 · 17/09/2025 09:41

There is only a couple of things I would want. The first is to give up my job immediately and then get a bigger house and lots of rescue dogs.
