If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?

Lotto Good Luck GIF

If I won the lottery... I'd finally find a balance between work and kids!
Okay, imagine this: I win the lottery today. What’s the first thing I’d do? No, it’s not splurging on a holiday or buying a mansion (although, sure, that sounds nice too). The first thing I’d do is hire help to take the pressure off balancing work and childcare.
Honestly, it's such a struggle trying to juggle both—working from home with a toddler (or even just having them around when you’re trying to focus) is impossible. I feel like I’m always half-trying to work and half-worried about whether they’re getting the attention they need. If I had the freedom to step back and really focus on one thing at a time, I’d be a much better worker and a much better mum.
I’d get a cleaner, a nanny, maybe even a personal assistant (why not dream big?). Then, I’d finally be able to enjoy both my work and my time with my kids without feeling guilty or overwhelmed.
Anyone else daydream about what they’d do with a little extra help or time? What’s your “first thing” if you won the lottery?

Yes I would buy in help too. Ideally a personal assistant cum personal chef cum house keeper. Or maybe three different people for same. I suppose I would have to go and get a bigger house to keep them all in. I would be hiding from them all in my office cum crafting studio at the end of the garden.

They could do all the boring life admin and house tasks and I could just swan about being arty.

Montereyjaaack · 17/09/2025 07:53

The last thing I’d do is get a cleaner or other help just because with having my disabled daughter I am so truly sick of having people in my house to test hoists or slings or chairs or her ability to swallow etc.
Id pay for the best SALT that is in the country (NAPA centre) and privately seek out a PA and invest the majority for her future care because that’s my biggest worry in life.
But I’d also do several holidays (after buying whatever kind of powered wheelchair she would fit).

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 17/09/2025 07:55

Hand in my notice and go out for a slap up meal!

paranoidnamechanger · 17/09/2025 07:56

With my own savings, the first thing I'd do is book a long solo weekend to New York - first class flights, the best hotel - £13k.

Comedycook · 17/09/2025 07:57

First thing I'd do would be do my weekly food in m and s. It's my dream

Soontobe60 · 17/09/2025 07:58

For someone who’s too busy to look after their baby and do their job, you’re sure busy on Mumsnet this morning!

HateThursdays · 17/09/2025 07:59

I would put my house up for sale at a giveaway price, move away from this town and employ a driver on a good wage who only drove for our family as I don’t drive and start to actually enjoy life.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 17/09/2025 08:01

Resign.

I'm 58 and DH is 63 so we'd be able to enjoy an early retirement.

I'd invest as much as possible so that DH and I could live off the interest. Hopefully that would be enough to allow us to have a couple of holidays a year. I'd love to fly business class to Australia to see my sister who lives there.

Crucible · 17/09/2025 08:03

Buy 2 flats for 2 siblings. That is first.

SomethingFun · 17/09/2025 08:07

First I need to win at least 6 million to do what I want to do, so assume it’s that much.

  1. quit terrible job
  2. go live on one of those beautiful retreats in Greece until I’m thin, toned and gorgeous, chilled and completely healthy
  3. travel the world in the school holidays
  4. Make sure me, my family and friends are set for life
  5. Do something good for the world with my time and extra money - probably mental health related
Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 17/09/2025 08:08

A million being enough to quit job depends on your age whether you currently own a home and if so how much is still mortgaged. If you are 52 with 100000 left on your mortgage and no other debts you can quit, if you are 32 with. 450000mortgage you can't.

Noone would just leave a million in a savings account but even in a high interest account it would be 37000 a year in interest but invested in stocks shares bonds etc you would be more likely to get 60000or more. While lottery winds are not taxed the interest they earn is. for most people 37-60k annually would make a huge difference it's the average annual income or more. Obviously if you buy a 500k house outright and spend another 100on cars house repairs and paying off debts you still have 400k which will give you 12k interest plus you'll have no mortgage or rent, which would certainly make part time an option for many or more paid help. Or leave invested so you can retire at 50-55.

Berlin2018 · 17/09/2025 08:09

£1-3 million- DH and I to go part time and retire in 5 years. £4 million plus retire now. New house in a different area, fantastic holidays and invest money for the teens to buy a house when they are ready to move out.
Ive always thought I’d also buy the audio book version of every book I read so I can carry on with it when I need to drive, do housework or go for a walk. A small thing but feels very decadent.

Blanketenvy · 17/09/2025 08:15

Quit work.
Am chronically Ill and on the verge of losing my job anyway so it would literally be life changing. To be fair I'd also quit my job if I won 100k and just try and allow myself some proper time to rest without the pressure of thinking about not coping with work.
Then book a lovely cottage by the seaside for a month and go there with the dog.
Eat a lot of ice cream.

IReallyLikeYorkshire · 17/09/2025 08:17

Resign, put the house on the market immediately and relocate to North Yorkshire as soon as I find a nice little house by the sea!

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 17/09/2025 08:19

Renovate the house and garden to be somewhere lovely to live in now and then sell in a few years.
If I won £2m I'll go part time , if I won more I'd quit work and travel and do an interesting OU degree, like Eng Lit.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 17/09/2025 08:24

Buy a house with no close neighbours and a bit of land.

Beaverbridge · 17/09/2025 08:25

Book top hotel in NYC for a month. Before leaving I'd get renovaters / building workers for current house. Completely have it gutted top to bottom.
Assuming it s a large amount pay off DD, s mortgage and any work she wanted done. Same with other DD though hers is rented it needs work done too.
Have expensive beauty treatments. Book a PT.
Give to local hospice substantial amount.
One can but dream!!.

SoftPillow · 17/09/2025 08:26

£1m - put some money aside for my niece’s education and donate to Women’s Aid / local domestic violence charity. Nothing much else would change.

£5m plus - I’d stop working, make some business investments, fund niece’s education and multiple other school bursaries. Donate significant amounts to domestic violence charities and shelters. Perhaps buy a second home for holidays.

Oh, and I might get my eyes and teeth fixed (could and should do it now but somehow it feels more acceptable with lottery win)

wordywitch · 17/09/2025 08:29

The very first thing I’d do is hire a twice-weekly cleaner and a gardener to sort the garden out. That would take so much pressure off and allow me to enjoy my home and be less stressed while making important decisions about what to do with all my money 😄

Titasaducksarse · 17/09/2025 08:30

It depends. £1million or £50million?
I could spend £1million in about half an hour lol. Or not...I'd invest and compound the interest for a few years then spend.
£50million ..I'd go away in holiday and have a think what to do with it.

ForCandidPinkBeaker · 17/09/2025 08:30

Close your eyes and calm down for a while

HappiestSleeping · 17/09/2025 08:32

I would spend half of it on drunken debauchery, and then I'd probably waste the other half.

Robotindisguise · 17/09/2025 08:32

Put DD into a private special needs school - currently awaiting a tribunal as we continue to drag ourselves through the hideous process. Then devote my spare time to campaigning for a better system.

mamagogo1 · 17/09/2025 08:35

Hire a cleaner, give my 6 month notice at work and buy/lease a garage for dh. Everything else is think about

CuddlesKovinsky · 17/09/2025 08:41

I love my job, but I'd be doing it from a gorgeous little cottage by the sea with room for donkeys and chickens and no neighbours. I would have more time to focus on my job because I'd never lift a paintbrush or push a hoover ever again... And I'd have top-level private healthcare.

Little mix of fantasy and practical there! 😄
