I work in an office of a factory. We get 8 litres of full fat milk a day delivered . I asked around to see if I changed 1 of the bottles to low fat milk if anyone one would mind. They all said ok so I was given permission by the accountant to change it. The cleaner seen the low fat milk in the fridge and freaked out . interrogating everyone to find out who changed. she demanded I change it back even though i don't answer to her. She is feer mongering anyone who drinks saying ' I can't believe your drinking' 'that's the last bottle of that you will see' . Hiding in the back of the fridge and refuses to put it inth same section as the other milk.. But the worst of it happened this morning when i realised she poured over half a litre of full fat milk into the carton of low fat milk. What the hell do i do in this situation because i know if i go to management they will laugh at its ridiculousness and wont take it seriously. I don't like confrontation so i dont know how to best approach.

I think she's re filled it to try and prove a point . That's nobody will drink it . Even though multiple people were drinking it.

That makes sense. Definitely report and do not bring in your own milk. Why should you

Couldyounot · 17/10/2024 12:14

Imagine having the time to waste on pointless bollocks like this. If I wasn't happy with full fat I'd just bring my own and forget about it

Ramblomatic · 17/10/2024 12:14

Tell her to leave the milk alone and get back to scrubbing the bogs, the little weirdo.

NasiDagang · 17/10/2024 12:15

She shouldn't be tampering with food! What if you have a medical condition like high cholesterol?

It's the cleaner who is wasting time by pouring milk into the wrong bottle!

Truly bizarre behaviour. I don't know anyone who drinks full fat milk other than small children so surprised it was the norm in the OP's workplace anyway.

Everyone you know?

I have no idea what milk everyone I know drinks and why the fuck would I?

You're the odd one. Nosey and odd.

I doubt she's asked colleagues, friends and family to complete a milk preference survey. It's quite normal to know what type of milk people drink e.g. everybody provided their own milk at work and the fridge was full of semi-skimmed cartons, being offered drinks at friends and families' homes and being told that they only have semi-skimmed.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/10/2024 12:25

I prefer full fat milk but cannot drink it in tea, it has to be semi skimmed for tea! I have no idea why, maybe I'm weird. But it shouldn't matter to the cleaner WHY there are two different types of milk in the fridge; there are, and it's absolutely non of her business why. If someone wanted to drink banana milk shake, would she object to that?

DecafDodger · 17/10/2024 12:28

I would not let it go. First, it is bullying if she keeps going on about you not being allowed the milk you prefer.
But Iwould be very concerned what else in the fridge she's tampering with.

GoldenLegend · 17/10/2024 12:29

I'd tell her it's none of her business.

Since when did the office cleaner get to decide who uses what kind of milk?

You can get round this by refilling one of the empty full fat bottles with skimmed and putting a small mark on the bottle to say whose it is.

Get back to scrubbing the bogs? Do you think cleaners are beneath you? The cleaner is out of line, but there is no need to speak about her like she is dirt.

Who has full fat milk? Everywhere I have worked for the last 25 years has semi if its provided at all.

It’s a shame that “full fat” milk is branded as such. It’s actually very low in fat and is better for you.

skimmed and “low” fat are such a con.

Sorry, yes. That's what I meant

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/10/2024 12:34

I would email HR, and her line manager, and stick a sign on the fridge as follows;

Some people at X company need low fat milk as a dietary requirement and someone has been mixing low fat milk with the full fat milk. It is very important that the contents of the bottles must not get mixed up. The bottles / packaging include potential allergens used in processing the food. Falsely presenting food is an offence, as the name of the food must be clearly stated on the packaging and not be misleading.

This sounds absolutely unhinged.

There‘s no use trying to reason with that kind of crazy. You won’t get anywhere and you’ll never be able to fully trust her.

Bring your own milk in a thermos (as pp suggested).

ThatTealViewer · 17/10/2024 12:35

She’s tampering with food. It might seem innocuous, but it’s a major H&S violation and should be reported as such. It’s not an amusing foible.

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 17/10/2024 12:37

The woman is maybe a bit bonkers, but the answer is obviously to just talk to her explain you prefer low fat, ask nicely how it is affecting her and work out how to resolve whatever her issue is. Cleaners sometimes just want a bit of acknowledgement that they are not invisible and their jobs, contribution and feelings matter too.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/10/2024 12:38

Such a strange and pointless thing to do as it doesn't affect her at all. I would let someone higher up know so the right person can have a word with her.

Ohhbaby · 17/10/2024 12:38

Haha cleaner sounds mental, but I thought we were past the 'low fat is healthy stage'.?
Anyway, OP if you're still into that misinformation, just bring your own milk. Not worth the hassle

ilovesooty · 17/10/2024 12:41

The milk isn't any of her business and she shouldn't be messing with it. Tell her to knock it off and if she doesn't, report her.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/10/2024 12:42

ArcheryAnnie · 17/10/2024 11:52

This sounds trivial, but is actually an H&S issue, which could make people ill. You should never pour milk into a commercial milk container - eg if you've poured some into a jug for a meeting and it wasn't all used. Transferring milk back and forth from various containers - even from one milk bottle to another - introduces bacteria and contaminates the whole. This is especially true when the milk has been bought with different expiry dates, or one has been kept at room temp for a while (eg in a jug). It's better to pour it away than mix it.

I do think this person should be asked by HR for a meeting to find what on earth is going on. It's very strange and potentially dangerous behaviour.

This too! It’s dangerous

CocoapuffPuff · 17/10/2024 12:42

Why is the cleaner messing around with the milk anyway? I presume she has access to it, same as every other employee, but why does she feel she has the right to dictate what other people use?

My uncle was on a low fat diet for his gallbladder issues and would have become terribly unwell if he'd been thinking he was using skimmed milk but it had been substituted for full fat.

That's insane behaviour that could have dreadful repercussions for others.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2024 12:47

I prefer full fat milk but cannot drink it in tea, it has to be semi skimmed for tea!

I like FF in coffee, skimmed in tea. I don't want fatty tea, but I'd have cream in coffee as a treat! And the amount of tea I drink, in the context of somewhat high cholesterol levels and also being small with a low TDEE means that I'm pretty sure FF wouldn't be 'better' for me.

The cleaner is obviously massively out of order. Don't people with gall bladder problems need really low fat diets?

LurkingFromTheShadows · 17/10/2024 12:48

The cleaner is mad

Dita73 · 17/10/2024 12:50

Tell her to wind her neck in,leave the bloody milk alone and to wash your mug up

AuldSpookySewers · 17/10/2024 12:51

I can’t believe you haven’t had it out with her. What are you afraid of?

“Janice, why are you tampering with my carton of milk? Don’t touch it again!”

Never let people think they can walk all over you otherwise it’s never ending and fucks up your self esteem.
