Just under three years in my "new" job and I've been promoted to assistant director and I've been sponsored to do an MBA. I'm earning 40% more than I did in my old job - with even better prospects ahead - and really very, very happy with how it's all worked out. My boss is an absolute gem.

If anyone is in the position I was - my advice is - if your face doesn't fit, just get out. Find a company that appreciates you. Don't fall into the trap of sunken cost fallacy. Don't expect an organisation to magically change to become the one you want it to be.

I am so fucking fed up re my (lack of) career | Mumsnet

Been with the same company six years. Report to the (female) CEO. Keep being told I'm doing a good job to my face but only had one tiny promotion in t...

This sounds great!

HappyHolidai · 05/07/2023 14:35

Excellent. Looking back, your initial barrier was that your local area was poor for other jobs - and then this popped up. Were you just lucky, or did your new employer move into the area?

YukoandHiro · 05/07/2023 14:37

I remember your initial post! I'm so pleased for you

BackwardsGoing · 05/07/2023 14:59

Thanks all! @HappyHolidai there is literally one other employer with literally one job that matched for me. It came up and I got it! I was in fact second choice, they offered it to someone else first who wanted to do it remotely (i.e. not move to my rural area) but it's important to actually be here so when they turned it down they offered it to me. I wasn't proud - I grabbed it with both hands.

The promotion I've just accepted is a wider geography so I will be travelling a bit more but DD is older now so home life isn't as intense. The timing has worked out really well.

bloody well done op. That’s such a great update.

I wondered how long it’d be before someone tried to burst your bubble. Second response and there it was! 🙄 Funny how men get on with hard work and talent, women have to rely on luck eh? 🙄

long May your success continue op.

Steady on folks 🙂.

And well done OP, that sounds brilliant. And it's just what I needed to read today - I'm leaving for a new job soon, and have mini-wobbles now and then.

Peace and Love everyone, it's a happy thread and hopefully gives hope to others stuck in similar positions.

I'd characterise it as "the harder I work the luckier I get". Cheesy but true. I put in 12 hour days just preparing for the interview.

Nasty bitch? Wow!

CandlelightGlow · 05/07/2023 16:49

This is so inspirational! I'm so happy for you that you've done so well and thank you for posting a follow up!

Florissante · 05/07/2023 16:54

I'm pleased for you, OP.

NineToFiveish · 05/07/2023 21:25

This is a good news story for sure, OP. Congrats! And sound advice. I'm leaving an org where nepotism is rife, and my face definitely doesn't fit, despite being very good at what I do. My team is grand, but the SLT are blokes who think they know everything. I'm moving into a role with more pay, and it will set my career up for bigger things down the line. I'd love to be in your position in a few years. Company sponsored MBA and assistant director or bust!

Congratulations!

BackwardsGoing · 06/07/2023 15:16

Thanks again all, and @NineToFiveish - good luck - I believe in you!
