I lied

Before I get any hate I want to say I know I am in the wrong.

We had a virtual away day booked in for the whole organisation and I had a meeting which overlapped by 15 minutes.

My manager was unaware about the first meeting and I lied and told her it was about HR/ date protection.

She has then investigated this and has been told no I was not in a HR meeting.

I then repeated I was.

My manager has said she will be getting HR advice now.

I am planning on going in and telling the truth tomorrow but want to know can I get fired for this?

I work for this Civil Service

@Yerroblemom1923 a whole organisation meeting is unlikely to be a cringy team building exercise.

It’s more likely to be so everyone in an organisation receives important information at the same time.

@Princessglittery Duxiechickonhols says exactly what it is. See above.

I very much doubt you will be sacked hun. I can imagine it was in the moment panic sort of reply. As with anything of this nature, a lesson learnt, we all make mistakes. Just be honest and explain it, your manager may well have done the same of thing when she was starting out and hopefully have some compassion. When we get older and more experienced, after making heaps of mistakes ourselves in life, we can understand and just advise to not be so bloody silly in future. Best of luck, I'm sure all will be fine. Xx

If you look at the OP's first post, there is a "see all" button. This shows you all of the OP's posts so you can read them without having to look through the whole thread.
You really should do that before replying because the thing has all been resolved and is over now.

@Yerroblemom1923, @Dixiechickonhols actually says “I imagine” not it was.

Ted27 · 07/12/2022 19:02

Is it beyond your imagination that in organisations such as the civil service where people work from home and out of multiple sites, that on line meetings are the most practical and cost effective way of getting all staff together at the same time.
I started a new role at the beginning of Covid, the team was split across 5 sites. In two and a half years we met in person twice. On line meetings were and still are necessary.

Yes just a guess!

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/12/2022 19:40

@Dixiechickonhols oops, yes, not fact, apols! I just agree it sounds like that. Pointless waste of time that the OP won't have missed out on much just lots of people saying "Roger that, put it in an email Frank and I'll copy you in, Jill....etc etc"

Ted27 · 07/12/2022 19:46

You seem determined to belittle such meetings.
At my last all staff meeting the redundancy programme was announced
The one before that was called by the Secretary of State and the ministerial team to announce her priorities.
Not exactly inconsequential

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/12/2022 21:00

@Ted27 yes, but all that could've been done either in person in a real world meeting or in an email. Since Covid everyone has decided to never return to the real world. It makes a mockery out of wfh and employers are starting to see through it. Even employees are regretting it now they could be sat in a nice warm office rather than an Oodie!
I'm sure your job is v v important.

Ted27 · 07/12/2022 21:06

@Yerroblemom1923 ,
where did I say my job was very important ? I am a mere minion. But I do work in a government department with over 7000 people with offices in 9 cities from the North East to the South West.

Not exactly practical to meet in person is it ?

@Yerroblemom1923 you would notify staff they were at risk of redundancy by email!
wow

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/12/2022 22:56

@Ted27 you sound v dramatic. Surely there are heads of each departments that can call real life meetings for their staff. I can't imagining 7000 people turned up to a zoom meeting to be told they may be made redundant!

Ted27 · 08/12/2022 00:11

@Yerroblemom1923

You are dismissing away days as pieces of unimportant fluff which people are ok to lie to get of and have a day skiving.

I was merely pointing out to you that such meetings do have a purpose and the subject matter of the last two in my workplace. Meetings of the whole dept are rare, its more common to have meetings at unit level. My unit has staff in 4 offices, its still more cost effective and time efficient to meet online than have people spend 8 hours travelling incurring travel and hotel costs

The fact that you "can't imagine" busines being done a certain way is irrelevant.
