@cathyk2002 i wouldn’t agree that you have to work hard to make any money from Tpro on half a day I can make 60 and on a full day 90-100. You need to have a foot pedal and invest in some really good headphones it makes all the difference you can offset them against yr tax.

Whitestar55 · 10/05/2023 09:33

@cathyk2002 You do still have to actually work harder and relentlessly in remote freelance transcription than you would in the NHS on band 3 and 4 salary to earn anything near decent pay and you do not get holiday, sick pay, employer pension and NI contributions and you have to use your own equipment and register as self-employed.

Thanks nomadchild & Whitestar55
I'll see what happens once they get reference & take it from there.
Do you get instructions on how to set up for tax purposes ?

Whitestar55 · 10/05/2023 11:40

@cathyk2002 You need to register with HMRC (you can do it online, just follow the instructions), who will send you an ID number and a password, and complete a tax self-assessment after April each year. You don't get instructions from the transcription company, as you are regarded as self-employed by them.

Thanks Lunnuni. If I get started I may enrol to Tpro as well then. I'll see how it goes first. Hard trying to get a day in when you've been so busy daily for so long 🙄

cathyk2002 · 10/05/2023 12:05

Thanks Whitestar55
I'll get on it if approved to start

Whitestar55 · 10/05/2023 12:07

@cathyk2002 Good Luck! 🙂

@cathyk2002 I am making the same as I did as a full time band 3, once I take out the travel costs, parking fees, lunches, clothes for work. Its a no brainer for me. This is with Tpro. With dict8 no way could I earn the same as the work is so few and far between. Also I'm not wasting time travelling in that time I can do household chores or even have some leisure time and read a book, do my garden.

cathyk2002 · 10/05/2023 12:08

Thanks Whitestar55

cathyk2002 · 10/05/2023 12:11

Thanks nomadchild.
May also give them a go & see how they both work out - pros & cons etc

danblack87 · 10/05/2023 12:15

@Whitestar55 Thanks for setting up the new forum for Dict8 😀

danblack87 · 10/05/2023 12:18

There is plenty of work on Dict8 today; however, much of it is unclear. It's taking a long time to type anything ... in fact, it is taking longer than waiting for my washing to dry!!!!

cathyk2002 · 10/05/2023 12:31

Just one more quickie - do Tpro require a reference as well ??

Whitestar55 · 10/05/2023 13:14

danblack87 · 10/05/2023 12:15

@Whitestar55 Thanks for setting up the new forum for Dict8 😀

Hi, I haven't set up a new forum, only this one in November 2022? Is there a new one?

Hi all, I applied to Tpro about 10 days ago and received an email back from Kate to say they would “be in contact if we wish to pursue your application further”. I’m a bit worried they haven’t accepted me even though I have 6 years med sec experience. How long did you all wait to hear back from them? Thanks!

Whitestar55 · 16/05/2023 13:47

Hi everyone, has another thread been set up? It's very quite on here lately. Hope everyone's ok.

@Whitestar55 i haven’t heard of a new thread 😊

Gally123 · 17/05/2023 11:45

I recently contacted Jon Ashworth MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Today I received a reply to say my message has been passed to people dealing with Employee Rights for consideration of future policy development.

Whitestar55 · 17/05/2023 13:19

@Gally123 Thank you so much for that. It really does need bringing to the attention of policy makers considering we get nowhere by contacting transcription companies themselves.

OP posts:
Gally123 · 17/05/2023 13:26

@Whitestar55 The reply I had was very nice, not condescending in any way. If more people contacted him then we might make progress - as at the moment it is just my say-so. It needs more voices to add weight then something might be done, as opposed to "consideration."

carosel2 · 17/05/2023 15:50

@Gally123 - I have sent one off too to Jon Ashworth about the exploitation of the agencies that employ people like ourselves.

I have also put in about grandparents looking after their grandchildren and not being able to get paid like a childminder or even half the pay. My daughter who is a Midwife and a single parent has 3 children and was subsidised for a childminder but her childminder let her go as her kids went to another school and the other childminders were all full so I left my role as a med sec to step in but then was told I couldn't get any money for looking after them unless I was registered and also told I would have to look after other children that didn't belong to my family. Hence I am now self employed working to be flexible to earn a pittance from these agencies so she can work. I hope he puts forward my views to someone on both accounts.

I will post on here if I hear anything back

carosel2 · 17/05/2023 16:15

I also included my address but got an automated message saying he only dealt with his own constituents, but I had already asked in my email if he could kindly pass on to who may be able to help if he can't. I wait with bated breath!

Gally123 · 17/05/2023 19:33

@carosel2 - in my message I said that I was not one of his constituents but emailing him as the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. I also included my address, as per usual (not that I really make a habit of emailing MPs!) But I hope they do look at the situation of zero contract workers as ?Which magazine said a year or two ago now that the government would, but it all seemed to go by the by. I mentioned DICT8 but of course it affects all the other companies, Accuro etc as well. If one can be made to increase their rate of pay, the other companies will follow. Don't worry about the automated reply; I am sure you will hear something, it just takes a few days.

carosel2 · 17/05/2023 20:24

@Gally123 - Il keep you posted and let you all.know if they come.up.with anything. Nothing as yet though

Whitestar55 · 18/05/2023 00:46

The problem is, we're not zero contract workers, they have to be paid minimum wage, but we are classed as self employed and are seen as having accepted the crappy rates of pay voluntarily by negotiation, although we know that's not really the case, but as the law stands at the moment the only way they could be forced to offer better pay would be by changing our status, to zero hours or employee. The exploitation of this grey area, the low rates and the unpaid aspects of the work we have no choice but to do if we want a contract, definitely needs investigating though.
