Going part time - which day to have off?

My mat leave is finishing soon and I'm planning to go back 4 days a week. For those that do this, which day do you recommend taking off? I was thinking Friday's for the long weekend?

I have Fridays off. It's great for long weekends away or nights away and every weekend is a long weekend

Potatomashed · 08/05/2022 15:15

I was thinking about this too… I was thinking Monday because you have to pay nursery fees if they normally go in on a Monday even if it’s a bank hol…

OhLordyWhatNow · 08/05/2022 15:16

Depends if your job requires you to work Bank Holidays.

If yes, work Tuesday to Friday?

You still get a long weekend with the guarantee of never having to work a BH Monday

Rainbowshit · 08/05/2022 15:17

I always had Fridays off as it fitted on with my mum doing childcare for us.

If I'd had my choice I would have had Mondays off, mainly because of the bank holiday situation a pp has mentioned but also as most social stuff at work happened on a Friday and I felt I missed out on that.

Although Sunday nights in hotels are often cheaper....
But then if you dont work Friday and there is a Bank Hol ..you get a Four day break...unless you work in a job that opens Bank hols !!

I have Wednesday, never more than 2 consecutive days at work

LetitiaLeghorn · 08/05/2022 15:19

Mondays. It makes Sundays enjoyable and by the time you go back, you feel you're half way through the week. Working Fridays always feels like the weekend anyway. I used to have Monday and Friday off. Always felt more benefit from Modays.

HSKAT · 08/05/2022 15:22

I have Fridays off.

VioletHills · 08/05/2022 15:23

I have Fridays off too.

OddBoots · 08/05/2022 15:26

I work 5 days now but I used to enjoy a Thursday off, it felt like a 3 day week then just popping in for the Friday.

Buzzer3555 · 08/05/2022 15:26

I always had friday off. It meant i could get jobs out of the way and spend weekends with the family on fun things

dementedpixie · 08/05/2022 15:30

Monday and then you don't have your holiday entitlement eaten into when there is a Monday bank holiday

lilroo87 · 08/05/2022 15:33

I used to do a 4 day week before baby came along and had Fridays off but I'll be going back soon and will be having Mondays off. Nursery aren't in on bank holidays but I've no idea if they charge for those days anyway so I thought it best to take Mondays off x

Freeme31 · 08/05/2022 15:35

Ive done both Monday & Friday off but I preferred having Monday off less stressful weekend

DogsAndGin · 08/05/2022 15:37

Friday off. If you have Mondays off then you lose the benefit for most bank hols

Mossstitch · 08/05/2022 15:37

I always liked Mondays off when I dropped to 4 days, meant I enjoyed my Sundays more and could enjoy bottle of wine with roast without worrying had to get up next morning early. However, my children were all grown up by this time, I notice a lot of the young mums like Wednesday off to break up the week and keep on top of chores.

feministqueen · 08/05/2022 15:38

Take Mondays off because you get a better deal with holiday pro rata. Most bank holidays fall on a Monday so you wouldn't need to book it off

You should get the bank holidays pro rata in your holiday entitlement so you get to take the holiday at a time that suits you rather than having to take each bank holiday Monday.

Mindymomo · 08/05/2022 15:40

I went back to work doing 4 days a week and I had Mondays off. Usually spent all day shopping and housework, washing and ironing.

bcc89 · 08/05/2022 15:41

You get extra holidays if you take Mondays off :)

This, I had Mondays off so that I could choose when to take my pro rata'd bank holidays.

Brightonbelly · 08/05/2022 15:45

I’d go for Mondays. Fridays are usually quite nice days in the office. And you never get that Sunday night back to school/ work feeling if you don’t work Mondays. Plus now so are at school I use Mondays to get prepared for the rest of the week, batch cook and do housework. It means I don’t have to worry at the weekends this way

fedup078 · 08/05/2022 15:45

I took Wednesday off way before I even thought about having a baby purely because my job is so mind numbingly boring I can't stand to be there more than 2 days at a time
Yes I am currently looking for a new job

Crackercrazy · 08/05/2022 15:47

OMG definitely this. If I change jobs I will want Mondays off.

(7 bank holiday Mondays next year, compared to my colleague who will only have one as she works a Friday.)

soupmaker · 08/05/2022 15:48

I worked a 4 day week in my previous job Monday-Thursday. I now work a 3 day week. Monday-Wednesday. In both cases business need dictated the days.

If I could choose I'd always take the Monday as a non-working day for the reasons PPs have said, more leave entitlement due to so many BHs always being a Monday. If you have to work BHs then you need to weigh up what your contract says, if it's double time on BH you might want to keep working them!
