Going part time - which day to have off?

My mat leave is finishing soon and I'm planning to go back 4 days a week. For those that do this, which day do you recommend taking off? I was thinking Friday's for the long weekend?

Great thread as I'm about to up my week from 3 days to 4, was going to take Mondays but think Wednesday would be better, as people have said it breaks the week up.

Currently work Mon - Wed and find when Thursday arrives I'm done in and the house, washing etc is overwhelming.

Thanks all - some interesting points to think about. I don't work bank holidays so having the extra leave would be good.... but then lots of things are shut on a Monday round here which would limit what we can do. I'm pretty sure my work will agree to whatever I ask for (assuming it's relatively sensible). A break on Wednesday would also be nice but might mean I'm never in complete work mode... argh!

@Hidingawaytoday

Yes I found that "not complete work mode" a pain. Also, you end up thinking about work / just doing little bits when you are meant to be off and paid for it, if you're like me!

If just for your own benefit, I think Friday is best

If to let little ones have a rest from nursery / day with you, I think Wednesday

I wonder if your work would allow you to try it and see and then swap after a month or so if you think you'd prefer a different day?

Middle of the week feels like a waste somehow, not long enough to properly relax and by taking a Monday or Friday it means you can book long weekends without having to use leave.

I agree, and I'd just be getting into the swing of work then have a day off, then repeat

Interesting thread. I’m working part time for the first time ever. I’m self employed so can kinda choose for myself but have clients so do need to communicate when I’m working and available etc.

I started at 3 days a week with Monday and Thursday off but now doing 4 with Thursdays off.

Chose Thursday initially as my DD does an activity after school which involves pick up, drop off, waiting around and pick up again so eats into most of the afternoon but I actually like it as day off.

I get into my work stride Mon-Weds, then can have a bit of a break and then back on a Friday where there tends to be less meetings etc so I can actually get a lot of things finished/progressed and know what I’m coming back to after the weekend.

I have my preschooler at home on Thursday so I do swimming etc with him in the day and spend post school with my daughter so nice family time plus catching up with errands etc.

If I was older/younger with no kids to ferry around I’d probably go for a Friday though for habitual long weekends.
