Which 3 days to work

Katecairn · 10/12/2021 20:42

Hi.
Working part time currently Monday, Thursday Friday. Really like that 2nd weekend feeling when I finish work on a Monday with having Tuesday & Wednesday off. However, due to pro rata bank holiday rules I use up quite a bit of leave to cover the many Monday's that bank holidays fall on. Been given the option to switch to Tuesday, Thursday & Friday. Like the idea of a 3 day weekend and not using annual leave for the Monday bank holidays but will miss that Tuesday/Wednesday off. Has anyone else made the switch and any viewpoints. No other work pattern available at the moment. Thank you

I used to work Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It was OK but a but disjointed going in for one day and then off for the next. I did it for 5 years I think it was.

Since changing jobs, I have been doing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Although I find this more tiring, it is more consistent to be in work for 3 consecutive days. Plus I feel I get a proper rest over the 4 consecutive days off I get. It's been over 7 years I've been on this part time pattern. So I think it is better tbh.

Is there a chance for you to try out the new days for a short period of time and then revert back if it doesn't suit you? That would be a good way for you to see if you prefer it or not?

jackiebenimble · 10/12/2021 20:51

I also prefer to do mine consecutively. But i really think its personal taste. I think its worth changing to the new pattern to get the extra annual leave. If you get the chance to change again in the future see how you feel then.

Yes I can trial it before making a final decision. Will do a few weeks in the new year so will see how it goes.

I like Tuesday Wednesday Thursday best but I think if that's not an option then Tuesday Thursday Friday would be ok. No Sunday night blues, you can get everyone else off to work and school on Monday morning then sort yourself out for the rest of the week.

Hello1290 · 11/12/2021 14:37

If you are off on Monday you will have a long weekend every week and like mentioned upthread no Sunday night blues, plus not having to use leave to cover bank holidays should give you an extra 2-3 days annual leave each year ? You will also have Wednesday off so a mid week break as well !

SquigglePigs · 11/12/2021 14:42

One of my former colleagues did Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and loved it. All my colleagues who do three days now do three consecutive days.

2022TheYearofMe · 13/12/2021 08:26

I hate my job but I like my shift pattern which is Tues, Wednesday, Thursday. My week ends before everyone else and starts later.

If I liked my job it would be amazing.

It does also work very well with the bank holidays so I do seem to get far more annual leave than the full timers because I don’t have to use my pro-rata’d allowance for most bank holidays.

Monday
Wednesday
Thursday

Perfect

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 13/12/2021 08:31

Self employed.. I try for Tues Wed and Thurs. Then off a long week end of Fri Sat Sun Monday!

HairyScaryMonster · 13/12/2021 09:02

Sounds good to me, but then in my role not being out for 2 days straight is an advantage.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 13/12/2021 09:07

Tuesday Thursday Friday sounds good. I'd be tempted to ask to go up to 4 days and have the Wednesday off.

Thefuturestory · 13/12/2021 09:13

The Monday off would be better annual leave wise.

Personally I’d prefer three consecutive days in work. However I’d take what they are offering and ask if they can consider you for the first Wednesday that becomes available to swap your Tuesday

ArianaG · 13/12/2021 10:40

I would prefer Tues, Weds, Thurs and 4 clear days off. Also good for going away for weekend breaks.

mdh2020 · 13/12/2021 11:04

I worked part time including Mondays and never had to make up the days because of Bank Holidays. I did Mon, Tues, Thursday. On Tuesday you think ‘I’ve got tomorrow off’ and when you go in on Thursday you know you only have a few hours and a long weekend.

tumtitum · 13/12/2021 13:21

I used to work Mon to weds and had the same problem as you having to use annual leave for bank holidays. I now work tues weds and Friday and am hoping to swap to consecutive days at some point but it's not an option for now. I don't mind it too much and as my kids are in school I can't go on many long weekends anyway! Sometimes I feel a bit in limbo on a Thursday especially if I have something work wise hanging over my head

Newnews · 13/12/2021 13:30

An alternative perspective to pp. I don’t like doing tues weds thurs ie three consecutive days. It means when I come in on a Tuesday I’ve got a big backlog of stuff to get through because I’m not doing stuff on a Friday and then loads comes in on a Monday and I feel like I’m playing catch up all week. This time after Mat leave I’m doing Turs Thurs Fri and I think it will be much better splitting the days off rather than having it in one go IYSWIM. in the past I’ve also done mon tues thurs and that was quite nice too.

The days in the week that you work should not affect the overall annual leave you get, if it has been your employer is calculating your entitlement incorrectly.

Your leave should be calculated to include pro rata the same days a full timer would get. This should include a pro rata allocation of days for bank holidays. Then if a bank holiday falls on a day you normally work you would use a day from your total allocation for the day off. If you don't normally work on that day you keep the allocated day to use as leave on another day of your choosing. Either way you should end up taking exactly the same amount of annual leave including bank holidays.

There can be a slight advantage in not working Mondays when most bank holidays fall as you get to choose when you take the days in lieu of the bank holidays, unless your employer directs when you take these lieu days which they would be entitled to do.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/12/2021 15:37

Yes but with less choice.

Say you work 0.5 and thus get 4 banks. For the other 4, you have to use annual leave. Even though the office isnt open.

If you dont work any mondays, then two of your 4 banks will cover Good friday and (say) one of the christmas banks. That leaves 2 for you to use whenever you like in addition to all your annual leave to use whenever you like

OnGoldenPond · 13/12/2021 15:38

I see some posters have said they work Mondays, get all the Monday bank holidays off and have never had to adjust their leave entitlement. This is actually giving you an unfair advantage over full timers and actually isn't lawful. I would keep quiet about this if I were you and not tell any of the full timers as they might complain if they find out and you would probably lose these extra days!

Happy1982ish · 13/12/2021 17:07

Goodness I didn’t give a moment thought to the bank holiday issue

Drop in the ocean over the entire week

Choose your days according to what suits you and your family for 95% of the year!

Happy1982ish · 13/12/2021 17:08

Drop in the ocean over entire YEAR

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/12/2021 07:09

I dont consider it a drop in the ocean.

Someone on 0.5 gets (eg) 4 banks and 10 annual leaves.

If they have to use 4 of their 10 annual leaves to cover the other Banks, that leaves them 6 days of annual leave for the year. Seems shit tbh.

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/12/2021 07:14

I have Sunday , Monday, Tuesday off.
I like the 3 consecutive days..Monday all hairdressers and lots pf cafes are closed round hear so i end up cleaning Monday do other stuff out the house Tuesday

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 07:17

i dont think you get given extra bank holidays to use if you dont work mondays

ginnig · 14/12/2021 07:26

Tues, Wed, Thurs is the best imo. Monday is a great day to have off & get stuff done after the weekend as opposed to doing it on the weekend. Friday essential to have off as that's the day most of my friends have off, dc always break up early for holidays. Plus you can go away without using holiday for breaks & I find it more productive to work 3 days in a row.
