What’s Nottingham like?

Hello all,

I’m thinking of applying for a job that I have my eye on in Nottingham. What is it like to live there as I’d have to relocate from Durham? Any areas to avoid? The job is at Queen’s Medical Centre if anyone is familiar with the hospital.

It's a lively place, lots going on, art and culture wise. It has its rough areas, like everywhere else.

I've lived here 20 years, and like it.

I have family near there and we meetthere sometimes. My impressions are a fun town with good cafes etc. A few rough types around but fewer than London. Can’t help on areas sorry, was following my relatives around and not quite sure where I was!

Areas vary hugely and are very cheek by jowl. The area around queens med can be exceptionally expensive, with excellent schools. There's also a somewhat rougher student area alongside. Lots of big estates.

Good public transport if you are in areas classified as 'city'. Less good if you are county.
Lots of suburb areas.

Recently visited as a tourist checking out if I wanted to live there. Found it ok but lacking in a soul somehow. Weird vibe! Town centre was busy busy, with a lively but rough crowd. Bouncers look in your eyes before you go in a pub, assume there are drug issues commonplace. Didn't love it. Definitely a fair amount of poverty but some nicer areas. It definitely wasn't my bag though, something about the vibe of the place didn't sit right with me even though most people friendly.

I have to say, I don't like it as a tourist city.

Love it. All of the action of a city but not as big as London, Manchester etc. Lived there for a few years and felt it had a quirky vibe. Lots to do and see. Not massively touristy but there's the castle in the city centre.

Ive lived here all my life. It has it's good and it's bad areas like everywhere else. I'm classed as in a county but public transport is good. About 20 mins to Nottingham centre then it took me another 20 to get to the QMC when I was training.

Pub wise, it totally depends where you are going. There certainly isn't a rough crowd everywhere you go. Although bouncers looking you in the eye made me laugh. I don't think drugs are more common here than anywhere else . Well that may depend what pubs you go to!

I thought the same thing when we were there the other month; I wasn't sad to leave.

I had to go for work and felt more uncomfortable there than any other city or big town I've worked in. I can't explain why. I just felt unsafe and couldn't wait to get away.

I like living in Nottingham very much, in fact I moved back after living here as a graduate. It's a good size, plenty of facilities, well located and easy to get around. It's not Durham, it's not a cathedral city or tourist attraction, but get to know it a bit and it's a place with a lot of friendly character. Affordable and well located. I don't go to nightclubs but never feel any issue going up to town to restaurants/events.
There are students, run down areas, drugs and crime but so are there in every city.

I’ve worked at QMC, it’s a large teaching hospital attached to the University of Nottingham.

Any nice villages aren’t exactly handy. Places like Wollaton and West Bridgford are decent residential areas.

Not really unfortunately but there are areas which have that feel but they are v expensive (although it's all.relative I guess)

There.is the park and ride which has the medilink bus to QMC or the I4 bus goes through the other side of the city to the QMC. There must be other buses but those are the ones I know

Look at Cotgrave, Keyworth, Clifton, Gamston. All within 20-30 min drive to QMC. Park and ride Queens Drive is a short journey to QMC.

I went to uni and loved Nottingham. Students from notts uni tend to live in Lenton (some are in beecroft). Trent students are dotted about the city. It’s a great place to go out. Certainly not rough, just don’t be stupid about safety (bag wide open etc).

It’s got a rep for crime (was called Shottingham when I went to uni 10 years ago) but mostly reserved for gangs. I felt far safer there than living in London (which I also loved). It’s also extremely affordable. Lock your car and house properly x

West bridgford is a nice place to live, really easy access to the city (can walk) and has its own vibe with bars and restaurants. I much prefer WB for a night out than the city. Good schools and desirable for professionals and families

The Park is a very desirable area, really expensive but a private gated community and very naice. High concentration of very rich. Again can walk into town.

Woolaton, Ruddington and Edwalton are lovely areas. Mapperley park is gorgeous.

There’s lots of places further out such as ravenshead, Attenborough, kirklington, bunny - I have friends in all of these places who rate them

In terms of where to avoid it’s not that easy, there’s loads of areas that used to be known as rough such as Hucknall which have been developed and now have a really different demographic. It’s like anywhere with each area having a mix of rough and decent

Ruddington and villages along A52 towards Grantham? Are you driving or relying on public transport? There is a tram-link planned for QMC to city centre.

Wollaton is the closest naice place. It’s walking distance from QMC and there’s a really lovely deer park in Wollaton.

I went to uni there and it wasn't for me. Lots of drugs and homelessness and no countryside nearby.

It's got everything that most cities have though, good bars, restaurants, theatre etc.

No countryside? It’s in the middle of Sherwood Forest and next to the Peak District!

We lived in The Park when we were in Nottingham - fantastic location.

We put an offer in on a house in Chilwell, which is just west of Beeston. It's on the tram line that runs through QMC.
