How much do you earn

Have previously come across a similar thread on another forum and it was so interesting! Basically people commented with their job, age and how much they earn. I hate my job/industry and feel it doesn't pay well like I was led to believe but also feel I have no idea what's out there career/job wise and how much various jobs would earn so what I could do.

I'm 27, a solicitor in Scotland and earn £35k

@Z0rr0

Christ this thread has made me even more depressed about my current sitch than I already was - and made me realise I massively undersell myself. 50, freelance writer, currently managing about £1k p/m commiserates with @tinkywinkyshandbag**
Same, it's made me feel quite down tbh. I had a shit time growing up and personal circumstances made it hard for me to hit educational milestones, and now I can't afford to pay for courses to help me progress. Now because of my age it is making it even more difficult to be given a chance to do something new other than work in a supermarket. I am trying to do something new now, or hopefully when coronavirus eases, but still, if I am not admittedly a bit jealous.
Saffie980 · 28/01/2021 12:33

Gosh this is interesting! Thanks all who have shared. I spent my entire twenties in an existential crisis and have only got round to starting my career properly at 33( Government Social Researcher, entry level £33k). I live with my parents and feel like I have just woke up, looked around at my life, and thought 'what the hell am I doing?!? '. Time to get my shit together, work hard and increase my salary so I can have my own home and financial security. I found reading most of your posts very motivating!

So a 'stranger on the internet', quite literally, has asked you for personal information and about 400 people have instantly coughed up despite a few others pointing that out. And many have thrown in more information gratis.

There is nowt as queer as folk. 😬

Nobody can do anything untoward with my job and salary. Literally nothing.

have you looked at any of the "getting women back in the workplace" initiatives? They are often looking more for personal qualities and transferrable skills rather than particular qualifications and courses.

YukoandHiro · 28/01/2021 12:42

Because maybe a lot of these people believe in pay transparency and feel they have nothing to hide. Cloak and daggers around pay is what leads to gender and race pay gaps.

The bots already know this and more about all of us anyway. It's not like they're sharing their mother's maiden name and the name of their first pet FFS.

Devlesko · 28/01/2021 12:43

I'm a company director so if you can work out who I am, all of the relevant information on my company finances is in the public domain anyway.

HamletsHamlet · 28/01/2021 12:53

36 years old, software engineerin manager. I have multiple degrees and professional certifications.

68k basic, plus annual bonus (sometimes a couple of grand, sometimes about 8k). And decent pension matching contributions and ££s support for CPD, both of which I care a lot about.

I love what I do and will be encouraging DD to go into a technical field. Anything that suits her personality.

I have family members in the trades, health and safety engineering, railway technicians, sciences, STEM lecturers, etc.

These roles tend to be male-dominated but well paying and stable - in my case, IT also offers a more comfortable working environment, WFH, flexibility too. If you don't burn out due to peak stress times it can be an excellent career choice.

Sleepyquest · 28/01/2021 12:53

I'm 30, accountant in industry and £35k. Wondering where I'm going wrong and what to do next Grin

itsgettingweird · 28/01/2021 12:54

bonus is standard, but well done on your basic. It's quite good, especially for someone young.

It's refreshing to hear about positive people when there are so many doom-and-gloom addict pretending that no one can earn any money these days.

79andnotout · 28/01/2021 13:13

@Graciebobcat - hopefully! Although we're in the NW so will see what the appetite is like for it round here.

MeowPurrGrr · 28/01/2021 13:15

42 NHS nurse of 7 years £28k
Leaving to do agency which could get me around £50k+

Catty1720 · 28/01/2021 13:17

@Plussizejumpsuit

Are these threads mainly going to attract people who earn lots and want to brag?

I work in museums and galleries as a project manager audience development manager. I'm freelance and work 2 jobs at the mo around 3 to 3.5 days a week. For this I get approx 24k.

It's the opposite of these highly paid sectors. People are clamouring to get in. My most recent role had 150 applicants for 2 days a week. It's a sector I worked so hard to get into. I started part time on 17k a year pro rata with a 1sr class degree and distinction in MA. But I wouldn't sawp it for anything. I love art and culture and I do feel privileged to do what I do.

Considering you earn twice as me and I work full time 5 days a week currently on maternity though) I would class you as a high earner in comparison

Right who can I be today?? 🤔
Well today I am a brain surgeon 90grand a year.
You need to do much better than that! My current favourite is the 30 year old who earns £700K - doesn't say what she does though.

Maybe she’s is Hr? Lol 😂

I can see that you feel earning 90k is likely unachievable. It isn't. I have 18 professional exams to my name and a lot of experience. I'm also very good at it. My part-time job is extremely well paid, but I have colleagues who earn much more, and much less.

I have a client that earned about 700k in their late 30's- worked in a global bank at MD level. Perfectly possible. Now earns several million - a year. In reality there are not many people like this, but they do exist. Million pound bankers are not all in their 50's, there are a lot of them in London, perhaps, just perhaps one is woman.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 28/01/2021 13:30

Software engineer, private intelligence, London, 230k in 2020 including over 100k in a bonus. Previously earned less than 100k working in the public sector.

Shameme0nce · 28/01/2021 13:31

Reading through all of this has really been an eye opener.

I am 10y into teaching and done. I absolutely don't want to rise above middle management but the thought of this job for the next 30 years is soul destroying.

If I was to retrain with a view of making 60-70k (up north), what industry would you sink yourself into? All degrees and post grads are language/education focused.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 28/01/2021 13:31

Forgot to add, 32 years old.

Nannynanny1 · 28/01/2021 13:36

@Labobo
I work 7.30-7pm Monday to Friday but I do get to leave early probably twice a week.

HamletsHamlet · 28/01/2021 13:38

Anything male dominated. They pay more.

Anything with an above-zero barrier to entry. This assumes you have cross-industry skills and/or an ability to train/gain professional credibility where it will be valued.

Anything where you have to contribute to making a profit (i.e. you're not a cost centre).

A mix of the above is best.

IMHO.

(I have had a lot of software engineers under me that have been career changers. One example I worked with was an historian, did history at uni, worked in an archive role, veered towards digitisation work, ended up in a ridiculously specialised character recognition role in a secondment to a central government department, went into doing a informatics MSc, we snapped up on the grad programme, last I heard she was still at the bank in a software engineering team lead role on the cyber security team, earning £££s. All by about 30ish.)

Yep, my SIL's boyfriend is one of them. I think there are more of them than you might expect, but there's only one woman in his entire office.
