How much do you earn

Have previously come across a similar thread on another forum and it was so interesting! Basically people commented with their job, age and how much they earn. I hate my job/industry and feel it doesn't pay well like I was led to believe but also feel I have no idea what's out there career/job wise and how much various jobs would earn so what I could do.

I'm 27, a solicitor in Scotland and earn £35k

NHS IT manager, 55k, age 45.

Boltonb · 28/01/2021 11:55

Pre Covid, £114k working as an engineering consultant. Post Covid, had to take a permanent job at £60k.

TerrifiedOfTrying4No2 · 28/01/2021 11:56

24 - technical support - 18k - as new starter, pay rise pending.

Before that (maternity leave) 17-23 - dental nurse -little over £17k towards the end of the career. Hence why I quit; high stress job with 3 promotions but no pay rises.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 28/01/2021 11:56

Not as much as I used to but .... way more than I need Blush

I'm 53, a chartered accountant and have taken on a role in a small community interest company that does great work in an underprivileged area of the city.

It's great to be a bit older and be able to choose my roles, rather then following the money.

I think this thread shows the problem with getting rid of final salary pension schemes.

I'm on 100k but will probably pay most of that into my terrible pension fund.
by contrast, friends retiring from the police force after 30 years have never earnt that but have retired at 45!! on a 2/3 salary for life.

In the past nurses would have had that sort of security too to make up for the lower pay. When you take it away the pay discrepancy becomes much more stark.

and lol at what does HR do :). I confess I sometimes wonder.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 12:00

I moved to public sector & get paid a lot less but my pension is very good.

user86386427 · 28/01/2021 12:02

@ImsorryWilson there aren't many (if any?) final salary pensions in most public sector jobs now that I'm aware of, you can't compare yourself to people retiring in recent times, in my experience it's salary average now, not final.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 12:03

often that's still much better than private schemes though

funksoulmother · 28/01/2021 12:04

@MoveAsideCherry indeed, I took a £70k salary drop for this job

user86386427 · 28/01/2021 12:04

@marbellamarc absolutely, not denying that, but no good comparing current workers with people retiring prior to now, theyre of a different generation with very different benefits that very, very few people will experience going forward.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/01/2021 12:05

Someone said HR is so well paid because its complex and often requires postgraduate qualifications.

HR is only well paid at the top though. Like many professions

daisychain01 · 28/01/2021 12:05
@dpa2018 to be honest, even if they can see...I don't care! So someone knows my salary and some websites I like to view... big deal. Nothings going to happen.
This isn't just about you!!!

People like DPA2018 and I are raising awareness on here, just how foolhardy it is and how often the most basic security training drums it home that this thread is a great example of poor digital practice and how people are so easily and naively sucked into disclosing their data and identity. Just on the request of some random unknown person who you've never met and haven't got a clue what their intentions are.

You may not care now, and may not even know the consequences until it's too late, and your online security is violated. Then you'll wish you'd taken this advice more seriously!

daisychain01 · 28/01/2021 12:07

If people are genuinely interested whether they are being paid enough, or if they want to change career,or start their career, there are loads of websites you can browse, without divulging anything about yourself.

Z0rr0 · 28/01/2021 12:08

Christ this thread has made me even more depressed about my current sitch than I already was - and made me realise I massively undersell myself.

Graciebobcat · 28/01/2021 12:11

45, legal director, £67k

Lily193 · 28/01/2021 12:12

Consultant in niche healthcare field. Average daily consultancy rate of 2 k for office based work, higher for travel. I will usually work 3 days per week.

79andnotout · 28/01/2021 12:13

I'm planning a move to set up my own garden design business soon, so will be earning very little. The horticulture industry is paid terribly for the amount of knowledge you need (but everyone does it for the love).

Graciebobcat · 28/01/2021 12:15

I think you can make a bit more on the design side, @79andnotout, if you get a few wealthy clients.

KeepSmiling89 · 28/01/2021 12:16

31, NHS Speech & Language Therapist (Band 5) in Scotland - £26,970 a year.

Get bumped up an increment each year so will be a bit more come April (this is my 2nd year in this job)
I should say though that I love my job!

Right who can I be today?? 🤔
Well today I am a brain surgeon 90grand a year.
You need to do much better than that! My current favourite is the 30 year old who earns £700K - doesn't say what she does though.

Maybe she’s is Hr? Lol 😂*

I must admit I'm curious about this one too. She actually said age 21 and on 700K I think. In my industry there are salespeople pulling in that in their late twenties/early thirties but at 21 they were working in glorified telesales sweat shops on 20 quid if you could get someone not to put the phone down on you. Same with corporate lawyer types - at 21 they'd still be doing articles/training contract surely on what 50/60K? Same with the baby investment bankers.

Some sort of social media type? Very successful at cam work? Delusional?

Genuinely though, what are they going to get from me disclosing I'm an astronaut on £10k a year? Why should that info not be disclosed?

Actual genuine question.

itbemay1 · 28/01/2021 12:27

NHS specialist clinical role part time £55k
NHS Education part time £12k
I actually work 4 days per week.
