How much do you earn

Have previously come across a similar thread on another forum and it was so interesting! Basically people commented with their job, age and how much they earn. I hate my job/industry and feel it doesn't pay well like I was led to believe but also feel I have no idea what's out there career/job wise and how much various jobs would earn so what I could do.

I'm 27, a solicitor in Scotland and earn £35k

@Lily193

I have a client that earned about 700k in their late 30's- worked in a global bank at MD level. Perfectly possible. Now earns several million - a year. In reality there are not many people like this, but they do exist. Million pound bankers are not all in their 50's, there are a lot of them in London, perhaps, just perhaps one is woman.

Yep, my SIL's boyfriend is one of them. I think there are more of them than you might expect, but there's only one woman in his entire office.

Yup. There are fewer women though, it's true. But absolutely, if a woman does make it to director/MD level in 30s/40s, there's no reason why she wouldn't be on the same huge salaries.

And a junior banker age 24 is on close to 100k, male or female. More if bonuses are good that here.

If I was to retrain with a view of making 60-70k (up north), what industry would you sink yourself into?

You can pretty easily get 80k plus in the north in technical sales. You work for it though, it's not difficult but you're away from home a lot.

SoUmmYeah · 28/01/2021 13:55

IT. DH is an ex teacher and within 4 years of retraining had doubled his teacher salary.

And yes, I've found myself at conferences and been only one of a handful of women in the thousands attending.

user86386427 · 28/01/2021 13:56

I've set myself a goal to earn £50k a year by the time I'm 35, I'm public sector so the really high salaries aren't going to happen for me in the next couple years unless I jump ship to the private sector (which I'm open to) but £50k is the next grade up in my current role so is plausible. It's probably odd to set a salary goal but it's not just about the money but the strategic role that comes the next level up, I need more experience in my current role first really though I tell myself to think like a man and go for a job I like the look of and think I could do anyway! You never know and no harm trying. I've heard women go for jobs they know they can do and men go for jobs they think they could do, so I'm trying to have a more male mentality.

@Shameme0nce

I posted up thread but Big4 tax / accountancy you’ll get that after about 6 years.

You’ll need to work hard and pass the professional exams but they take graduates with any degree.

Can I ask what area of public sector?

I'm public sector and 50k pretty much top of my area, head of service isn't making much more

Z0rr0 · 28/01/2021 14:00

Sorry @minchinfin. Sad Flowers

Z0rr0 · 28/01/2021 14:06

I can't imagine what I would do with £100k a year. It blows my mind slightly to see so many people here posting upwards of £50k. My OH only just crept past £50k this year and we lost our child benefit which was a bit of a blow. Collectively, when I was employed rather than self employed, the most we earned was maybe £75k.

cherrytreecottage · 28/01/2021 14:07

31, Comms & Marketing, £41k

user86386427 · 28/01/2021 14:10

@SoUmmYeah civil service, G7 is £50k-ish although I think it varies between £45k-55 depending on department, departments I'm interested in are out of London and around £50k.

Barkleyspaubles · 28/01/2021 14:10

I believe there are about 3500 of them in London. Not vast numbers in a relative sense, but actually rather more than people might think.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 28/01/2021 14:24

Sorry if anyone took me seriously saying i was earning £500k at 30. i was taking the piss. I'm on minimum wage as a cleaner.

StormBaby · 28/01/2021 14:30

Logistics Admin £20k age 42

Thoroughly depressing

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 14:30

It's important to note though that high earning women are still far fewer than men.

"Law firm Wilsons publishes a report today showing that there are now 470,500 fewer women earning more than £100,000 than men across the country. The figure was around 383,400 in the financial year 2010/11. While 625,600 men now earn over £100,000 only 155,100 women do."

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 14:31

I know partners at top law firms that earn between 1-2m but they really are the exception.

marbellamarc · 28/01/2021 14:35

You get CB on a sliding scale to 60k so may still qualify for some.

I can't imagine what I would do with £100k a year. Collectively, when I was employed rather than self employed, the most we earned was maybe £75k.

Depending on the split for your 75k you could have been taking home 4.8k. one earner on 100k would take home 5.5k & potentiality lose the 30 hours, tax free childcare so it's not a huge difference.

HastingsSpoon · 28/01/2021 14:37

Late 20s, 32k (inc 2k bonus), public sector manager

I’ve always tried to earn my ‘age’.
I know that sounds daft, thought I was doing OK until this thread Grin

Didn’t go to college/uni etc though although have lv 3 qualifications relating to my role.

I’ll never be a massively high earner but I like my cushy job, good pension/flexibility etc. I’m definitely money motivated but wouldn’t know where to start in the private sector so I’d be really worried about jumping ship.

I play it safe which I think as a high earner, people tend to take chances where they might not work out etc. Could be wrong though!

updownleftrightstart · 28/01/2021 14:37

@Z0rr0 you shouldn't lose CB if you creep past 50k. It's a sliding scale above 50k until you get to 60k, and pension contributions are taken off your total salary

Z0rr0 · 28/01/2021 14:42

Thank you for the CB advice. I don't think our payments have changed yet because he needs to re-register with HMRC government gateway and go through his earnings with them before they make a decision. Apparently we might have to pay some back.

ImsorryWilson · 28/01/2021 14:46

"@ImsorryWilson there aren't many (if any?) final salary pensions in most public sector jobs now that I'm aware of, you can't compare yourself to people retiring in recent times, in my experience it's salary average now, not final."

Yes- it stokes the divide doesn't it? There will always be a cohort who hit the sweet spot with their pensions - like doctors retiring 5 years ago. So then those of us effectively without pensions look at drs 10 years young and assume they have the same benefits but theirs are less.

GappyValley · 28/01/2021 14:50

I can't imagine what I would do with £100k a year.

Spend it on a mortgage for an ordinary mid-terrace Victorian house in a formerly working class area of London, and childcare...
After I’ve done that, there really isn’t much left

Depending on when you got onto the housing ladder in London, you could have 2 people living in similar houses on the same street and one more disposable cash with a £30k job than someone with £100k job!

Weirdlynormal · 28/01/2021 15:00

I can't imagine what I would do with £100k a year

Well to actually get your hands on 100k you'll need to earn £168000
