How much do you earn

Have previously come across a similar thread on another forum and it was so interesting! Basically people commented with their job, age and how much they earn. I hate my job/industry and feel it doesn't pay well like I was led to believe but also feel I have no idea what's out there career/job wise and how much various jobs would earn so what I could do.

I'm 27, a solicitor in Scotland and earn £35k

OP posts:
@JaniceBattersby Do it! I'm a journalist too, nationals so very slightly higher rate of pay but the bullying culture is total bullshit, soul destroying, and hours incompatible with family life. Think I'm going to do the same soon.
I think it's true that overall journalists probably do earn less than PR, but I've been quite surprised by all the PR salaries on here. I have had a high salary in PR in the past, but that was working in London for investment banks, global consultancies etc. One thing that always made it hard for me to consider moving into a different industry was that the pay was so much lower. So if you are a business journalist, covering finance and banking, then yes, you could earn a LOT more in PR. But if you're a daily news reporter and would be looking for a comms role in, say a retail organisation, the difference would be less.

I am self employed now and used to be in one of those WeWork style shared offices. Most of the other people around me were B2C companies and every now and again they'd ask me for some PR or comms advice or float the idea of me doing some work for them. But even if I had the skill set, when I told them my fees they'd all almost pass out from the shock and would subsequently go hire a freelancer in retail PR at 1/3 my fee....

Mum, £0k. Pandemic has dealt me this card due to lack of childcare places in my very rural area.

Previously, teacher (HOD in challenging inner city school) £46K

Triffid1 · 28/01/2021 09:54

@YukoandHiro and corporate PR is not generally compatible with family life either sadly, It's why I got out of it. Clients, journalists and bosses all expect you to be available 24/7 and also to turn things around super quick. And you have to bloody be nice to everyone ALL the time. At least as a journalist you can tell the annoying PR person to get stuffed! Grin. If you can get work as a freelance writer that's a far nicer work/life balance, but the inconsistency of work can be scary. In house writing jobs are fab, but seem to be few and far between.

Interesting. As I thought MN tends to be more educated and higher earnings hence opinions differ over various issues.

Though I don’t work now. We’ve got a team who work. I’m a sahm. I’m 41

natalienewname · 28/01/2021 09:57

Cyber/tech, 37, £65k, which is a sting as I was previously on £88k but had to take a drop as there were no other jobs available.

I plan to get a pay rise soon or move on tbh.

FanciedanewnameAnne · 28/01/2021 09:57
@strangerontheinternet I earn 7 million pounds a month.

lonelySam · 28/01/2021 09:58

I'm a patent paralegal, work outside the UK, €70k for 32h per week, I pay almost 1/2 of it in taxes though. I'm 39.

Sethy38 · 28/01/2021 09:59

@Lorieandrews

Sorry not clear.

So you’re a business owner?

LucasLeesEyebrows · 28/01/2021 09:59

I'm 40 and an HE Administrator (mid-management), £49,000 in London. I work part-time though so that is pro-rata.

FanciedanewnameAnne · 28/01/2021 09:59

This illustrates how woefully underpaid most 'keyworkers' in the public sector are. Care workers, supermarket workers, etc

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/01/2021 10:00

46, solicitor, Midlands based, income varies but typically circa £200k

FanciedanewnameAnne · 28/01/2021 10:02

@Lovemusic33

MH worker part time £10,000

Full time carer to sn dd £60pw 😐

It is criminal that carer's allowance is only around £62 per week!
Perfect28 · 28/01/2021 10:04

It's so noticeable how little teachers get paid 😔

Someone said HR is so well paid because its complex and often requires postgraduate qualifications. Well ditto teaching.

Couple this with how much hatred teachers get, it's honestly a wonder anyone chooses to do it.

LemonBreeland · 28/01/2021 10:09

Is it envy or skepticism that motivates posts like this?
WaterIt · 28/01/2021 10:13

I was making 47k in HR but I'm now a SAHM making a little side income off of real estate. Mid 30's.

littlepattilou · 28/01/2021 10:13
