Would you do this?

I am a teacher. I am expecting our first child at the start of September.

I haven’t been happy in my role for a while but we wanted to TTC so I thought I would look for a job and TTC at the same time and see which came first. We conceived straight away.

BUT - I have seen a job come up that I am really interested in. If I got it I understand I wouldn’t get any mat pay but the pay rise would be substantial enough for it not to matter.

But it’s a dick move isn’t it? My current school don’t know I’m pregnant yet. I’m not showing, I could do the interview withiut telling them.

What do you think?

A friend of mine recently started a job and is expecting a baby in April. She didn't tell her new employers until she started (I'm not sure whether she told them on her first day there or not)

I don’t see how it’s any easier or harder for the school to find cover whether it’s a new employee or an existing one. Existing employees don’t have to disclose their pregnancy till 25 weeks, same as OP. This gives the school the same amount of time to find someone to cover them for their leave as with OP. Main difference is they won’t have to pay OP any maternity pay.

I do get that maternity leave is tough on employers. What I think would be more of a dick move though would be if OP didn’t return to work at the school after her maternity leave.

Just wanted to come back and thank everybody for their thoughts. I decided not to go for it, purely because I don’t know how I will feel after having the baby, and if i want to change working hours or whatever it would be easier to do with my current employer. I also realised that if by this time next year I am climbing the walls I could always apply for a job then.

Thanks everyone.
