Eeek, talked about my wanker boss here . and it hasn't got any better, except he hasn't been here much. Now I have a meeting on Tuesday with him during which I'm fairly convinced he'll piss me off even more. I'm absolutely dreading it. This week I've been deluged by sharp, rude emails, some of which are asking me to update on stuff I haven't even been asked to do! And then getting short with me for not having done it! I've been replying to say er, you didn't ask me to do this. I promise I'm not crap, honestly I'm not - he's just awful, disorganised, a control freak. My predecessor said she felt dread at the idea of work on the days he was in the office. I feel physically sick at the idea of coming to work on Tuessday and I'm not a wimp, honest. Shall I go off sick for a few days, starting now, instead of telling them to stuff it? Any advice appreciated, am really getting myself in a state. No time to preview, sorry if this is garbled.

OK, here's the update. I didn't get to speak to his boss on Friday. Went to work today feeling anxious about it. Was called in to see Tosser McToss at 10.30am. He opened the meeting with the words (said very aggressively) "Who Do You Think You Are?" I said 'pardon?' he said "I gather you've emailed my boss about me and I'm not happy" So I explained that I found it very difficult to do my job and that I thought maybe he ought to manage the dept himself or get a cheap clerk in to do my job if he didn't want to relinquish control. He said he thought I wanted to work without any control, I refuted that and said 'but I send you updates and questions and you never read them!' he said he wanted to see the email and, like an idiot, I let him. At which point he became even more apoplectic, incandescent with rage even and said 'I don't want you working here any more' I said that's fine, pay me the required one month's notice and I'll go. So I waited for a cheque to be raised (a months salary) and left at 11.30am. During the course of the meeting I told him:

  • That he was a bully and that I refused to be bullied
  • That I was 100% sure that it wasn't me and that these were HIS problems since my predecessor confirmed over the weekend that she and the FC both left for the same reasons, plus I know I'm good at my job
  • That I had never felt the need to do this before but that he had given me no other option.
  • That I thought he had control issues

I managed to remain incredibly calm (hey, it was really making him cross, my calmness!) but am f*ed off in some ways (got to get another contract; tosser is still there; it's just all very off pissing) and happy in others (got paid for a months work I don't have to do; don't ever have to deal with the wanker again; the stress about it is over). My explanation for leaving on my cv will he simple: it was a short contract and was finished but I really hope I find something else quickly. Still, the cheque bought me some breathing space. Thanks for your help everyone.

WOW. Well done you. Shame you never got to see his boss. I suggest you email TossMcToss's Boss and tell him how he reacted!

serenequeen · 01/06/2004 17:36

wow. well done for remaining so calm in the face of such provocation. he sounds, well, like a tosser... thank goodness you are out of there and good luck with finding the next contract

serenequeen · 01/06/2004 17:36

agree with cd, don't forget to update the tosser's boss...

Janstar · 01/06/2004 17:37

I'm surprised the big boss didn't at least ask you for your version of events. Maybe he will phone you when he finds out you have gone.

Whatever...well done for being so reasonable, calm and composed in the face of such provocation! I bet your staff are upset to lose you.

Janstar · 01/06/2004 17:37

posts crossed, looks like we are all thinking the same thing then

marthamoo · 01/06/2004 17:53

Well done you! I think you handled it all really well. I would still email (or maybe even write, somehow a letter seems more official) Mr TopBoss and detail Tosser McToss's reaction to you today, how he has made your life so difficult etc. - you don't have to hold back at all, you can tell it exactly how it is.

Ultimately though...their loss!

WideWebWitch · 01/06/2004 18:00

Oh, don't worry - am drafting email to Top Boss now as I won't have it said by Tosser McToss that I walked out in a fit of pique or something!

bran · 01/06/2004 18:05

I would love to have seen that - you so cool and collected and him about to bust a vein. It sounds as though you did the absolute best that you could under the circumstances. Hope you get a much better contract that you might have missed if you'd stayed there - you deserve it. Tosser McToss will get his come-uppance one day, hopefully very soon.

I wonder why Top Boss told Mr McToss about the e-mail without talking to you first? Talk about adding fuel to a fire.

JJ · 01/06/2004 18:20

Wow, I'm so impressed. Three cheers for the witchy one!

kalex · 01/06/2004 18:21

I agree with Bran, not much of a boss, when he handed the whole situation back to TMCT to deal with, although he will probably be pissed of with himself, that he has just paid a months salary to someone for no work, may make him rethink!!

Good for you WWW

And least this happened in the summer, you can potter about the garden instead of meeting deadlines that you don't know about!

Janh · 01/06/2004 18:41

Well I'm glad you got out of there with some money and your head held high, www! (Pity it wasn't him but you can't have everything.) Hope you get something much better very soon.

I wonder if you will be hearing from your successor in due course?

roisin · 01/06/2004 18:45

Well done WWW! Hope you have a fantastic 'free' month, and find something really soon where your talents are appreciated. I'm sure you will never regret taking this action, and hopefully TMT will get his comeuppance soon too.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2004 18:49

Oh, well done! Respect!!

Tinker · 01/06/2004 18:49

Well done you for remaining so clam. Pity he's still a twat and still got a job but...at least you can enjoy the half-term You got this job easily, you'll easily get another.

Tinker · 01/06/2004 18:50

And the Top Boss sounds rubbish as well. Golfing buddies?

Freckle · 01/06/2004 19:12

I'm amazed that the TopBoss tipped off McTosser without getting further facts from you. It is surely not in the interest of the company to continue employing an employee of wanker-degree, so why would TopBoss not want to investigate further? Bizarre. But at least you came out of it with your dignity and bankbalance intact, so wtg www!

sis · 01/06/2004 19:58

WWW, sorry it ended in this way but as everyone else has said, at least you got some money for putting up with the stupid behaviour for as long as you did and, more importantly in the long term, you know that you acted calmly and professionally in the face of extreme provocation. I'm not surprised that boss's boss told boss about the e-mail - I think most managers would do the same, ie tell someone that a member of their team had asked for a meeting and ask if he knew what it could be about about.

All the best in getting a new job soon.
