To make a # for myself?

I have a job interview for my dream job next week and in the job description they said they want someone creative and social media savvy. To help myself stand out in the interview I've created a # and asked people to retweet a tweet of mine or tweet to the # so I can show it in the interview.

I thought this was quite creative and using social media to my advantage but one of my friends says I am being ridiculous and will look stupid showing that during the interview.

It's a job in social media, by the way. AIBU?

If the job is in social media, it's a great idea. It would certainly demonstrate that you know what you are doing.

There's no presentation or pitch required for the interview so I thought if I did this I'd have something to show I can use social media and set me apart from others (who hopefully don't have the same idea).

Do you think I should set up a Facebook page too? One of the ones you 'like' as another method? I've been toying with the idea but my friends comments made me think I was actually being a bit silly.

Yes, do a FB page. And perhaps it's own Twitter account with appropriate layout for that as well.

I don't have an iPad, only my phone to take around with me but I could most certainly do that with the phone.

What's the incentive for people to RT it or to use the hashtag? Just people you know? Ideally you'll be able to show that you have got people you don't know (including "know on Twitter") to do it, to show that it has spread beyond your immediate network.

No the company isn't a fluffy company. That's my personal Twitter account I'm using to spread the word to the people I know and my Twitter followers since there's 950 people on there and I definitely don't know 950 people, they're just followers of my blog mainly.

I did post here just to see if I was being unreasonable but luckily it seems like a good idea. All of your advice and critique is invaluable so please keep it coming as I've only just tweeted and set up the FB page.

I don't wish to piss on your parade, but everyone FBs and tweets these days. We advertised for someone to do our social media for our organisation last year, and the person who got the job was someone who came to us with our FB, Twitter and web pages and showed us what he could do for us and why we should employ him to increase our profile, get more hits etc. He pointed out areas where our website could be better and what he would do to improve it. This is what you want to be doing, I think, not setting yourself up on Twitter and FB a few days before the interview. (He also showed us his Tweets, but more in a way of showing us what he could do for us, not "oh look, I've got 15 followers and someone has retweeted me.") They're not necessarily that interested in you, but more what you can do for them, I would say.

Once you've got it up to a certain number of retweets, make sure you tweet some of the people at the company you're applying to so they know what you're doing.

Do this in advance of the interview.

I think you want to encourage your friends/followers to RT your original message

Everyone RT or tweet to #laurasdreamjob to help me stand out in interview! They want someone social media savvy & creative! Creative enough?

That way when they do, their followers will understand what's going on and may be inclined to do it too.

If they just tweet "good luck" at you, that counts as one use fo the hashtag but doesn't encourage any more.
