1000 replies

chewie29 · 16/04/2012 14:56

Hi all.
I am currently a staff nurse on maternity leave and I have been very lucky, I have managed to get an interview for a Student Health Visitor Post tomorrow. Has anyone any advice they can give me for the actual interview? I am stressing as it is something I have wanted to do for a long time! I have send by little man over to his nans this afternoon so I can concentrate, I have just been getting more stressed as the day goes on. I have been preparing for the interview for some time but I'm worried my nerves will ruin it for me! Any advice or tips would be great. Thank you.

Thanks Littlebitwoo its good to know someone else, both Derby and Notts city are being so slow and yet I think both have short listed so I don't know why they can't just tell people. Derby interviews start two weeks today so you'd think they would hurry up, plus I wish they would tell people either way so they don't wait for something which isn't coming. Good luck to you x

Marking place as interested ... but further to go than most of you here I think !

Leah80 · 16/04/2013 08:45

Derby HR are still waiting for details from short listing panel but it does sound like its a letter and not an email and they will be sent this week. They said if successful it will be at an assessment centre and starts week beginning 29th April.

mummyh0003 · 16/04/2013 12:06

Kazlar, how did it go? I got to the interview stage, just waiting to hear now. Hopefully should know by the end of the week :)

iberostar · 16/04/2013 12:23

just to let LCH candidates know, JMU Are also interviwing over 3 days at end of April which is why we won't find out until may June time.

They are scoring both us and DIRECT JMU applicants together for the 30 places which will be split 18 in Sept and 12 in January.

hope that helps x

kazlar · 16/04/2013 12:42

Hi Mummyh0003, I think it went quite well thanks :) found the group session stressful and the waiting to hear if through to interview was very scarey! We had to wait a while to be told. The interview itself was much easier than I expected, how did you find it? I was told we will hear by beginning of next week, will be nice to know before weekend though! I reckon they must be interviewing about 100, apparently it's for Sept and Jan intake. Xx

mummyh0003 · 16/04/2013 12:50

Kazlar, we were told that they had 150 applications, they invited 84 for the group interview, then were interviewing those who performed well in the group session. They also said there were 32 places altogether for Sept and Jan. Found it very stressful too, we were kept waiting for 80 mins to see if we had an interview. The two people interviewing were lovely though. I've got my fingers crossed although due to the limited spaces I'm not overly hopeful. x

kazlar · 16/04/2013 12:58

Mummyh0003, Wowee!!!! I didn't realise that....... Thought it would be 32 places for each intake!!! Now I'm worried. I think it was about an hour we had to wait, was a long hour!!! Worse for you guys! At least we got short listed and interviewed I guess. Let me know if you hear anything, fingers crossed for us both. Xxxxxx going to be a long week :(

mummyh0003 · 16/04/2013 13:09

Kazlar, will do! Fingers crossed for both of us x x

Leah80 · 16/04/2013 14:35

Derby decisions have been sent and I've made it through to the assessment day x

staceyboo18 · 16/04/2013 17:09

I passed my assessment today yipee.. Although the fire alarm went off twice in my presentation (lol). I have my interview on friday and its in 2 sections. One is to the proffessionals and the others is to parents. Any idea or tips on what type of questions they will ask? One step closer to my dream job :) xx

ladycelestial · 16/04/2013 19:52

I just wanted to say good luck to you all with your quest to become a health visitor. It's truly a brilliant job and I can assure you all that it's a massive privilege working with parents who have new babies and toddlers. At present the future of health visiting is looking very exciting with the government's commitment to increase the numbers. Just to reiterate, if you get an interview it's the applicants that show the most enthusiasm who are more likely to get on to the course. Invariably you'll be asked how you'll cope with the demands of a very intensive year, both practically and academically, so have some good answers ready.

Health visitors are required to lead a team, so you'll probably be asked about your leadership qualities, so again have some great examples to show what a great leader you'll make. x

ladycelestial · 16/04/2013 19:56

At interview you'll need to show that you've done your homework regarding health visiting, but what they're really looking for is your potential. You might need to come up with actual examples of how your practice was innovative in your previous posts, how you've dealt with difficult situations, how you've used your problem solving skills, how you've worked well in a team, how you've taken the lead on a project.... all that sort of stuff. Good luck.

staceyboo18 · 17/04/2013 11:47

Leah80 · 17/04/2013 14:09

Sorry to hear you didn't get short listed for Derby, Nottingham are taking forever. I'm going to try HR again I think x

ladycelestial · 17/04/2013 19:59

Anyone who wants to be a health visitor should look out for jobs in the community. In some areas they take on staff nurses to work as part of the health visiting team and a job in the HV team would place you in the perfect position to move onto training to be a health visitor. Other jobs that would be helpful are basically any community based job, as there are transferable skills just from working in the community. One of my students had worked on the neo-natal unit and that experience stood her in good stead at interview.

You should also make your portfolio as good as you possibly can. Get yourself onto any training that you can, in your present post, as this will show that you're keen to study. It will also give evidence in your portfolio that you've studied recently. Take on any projects that you can in your present role, as this will give you experience in project leading and planning, all important attributes for health visiting. One of my students had created and written all the patient information leaflets for her ward. When she was asked about any innovative practice she was able to produce actual examples of the leaflets and the processes she went through to produce them, from her portfolio. If your keyboard and computer skills need updating take a course, as you'll need these to be excellent for the HV course.

If there are any teaching opportunities in your area of work volunteer, as again this type of experience will look great in your portfolio. Also any chance to do any sort of presentation would be useful, both as practice for you and to put into your portfolio.

I'll have a think to see if there's anything else I can come up with.

Hi All,
I have been shortlisted for Derby too, assessment day on 29th April - papping it already. For those that have been sucessful at Derby, are you applying from within the Trust or externally? For those who have applied from within the Trust, do you know if we stay on our current wage? I have heard that you stay at your current banding, but not sure how true this is.
The Values assessment sent by email is significant. Trust Values play a huge part in recruitment now, and they are looking to employ peeps that sit nicely within the Trust Values - the assessment day will have a focus on these I think. My boss was invloved in the early implementation of these assessment days so I will try and get some info out of him - he doesn't know I have applied though.
Leah80 - have you confirmed your attendance? We will have to look out for each other!! Just re reading this thread has made me super nervous!!

Leah80 · 18/04/2013 06:49

MrsLWestie congrats on being shortlisted, I'm applying from outside the trust. That would be great if you could find out a little bit of info. I found their trust values questionnaire ok so hopefully I won't find the assessment day too bad but who knows! You should join the fb group as there's lots of information on it and advice x
