We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Likely just the day chipping. I'm 90 minutes drive away so it is do-able. Although rather tempting to make a weekend of it and go on a shopping spree at Gunwharf Quays explore the historical docks.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 18/04/2018 00:53

WoollyWife there are still 20 there, go buy one, they’ll have to cope! Mind you, the speed you crochet will be somewhat intimidating 😂🤣.
Oh & BT are lying bastards. Like all of them. Dates mean less than nothing to any of them.

Spindelina. Errr...you’re coming without your cute sidekick?

Drop I’m only 90 minutes away too, but I’m definitely making a weekend of it. However, I’d rather shove bamboo down my fingernails than go shopping 🤣😂. I’ll be on the beach or in the pub...

MrsJonesAndMe · 18/04/2018 06:42

I've got a ticket!!!! I'm hoping that by then if I haven't managed to finish all my squares for Snug hugs and given joining them a try, that the wealth of knowledge in the room will help!

bookbook · 18/04/2018 08:42

yay!!!! :)

Spindelina · 18/04/2018 09:13

There’s a direct train service, but the earliest Sunday service wint get me there until noon, which I might do anyway - 2 hrs crochet on s train preferable to 2hrs driving a borrowed car. Or I need to convince DH that he wants to take DD to the dockyard on Saturday then get them both home on Sunday (dockyard + buggy isn’t going to work!). And I’m enjoying imagining the chaos of a 14mo and that much wool, Chipping!

Okki · 18/04/2018 09:49

Ive got a ticket too. Like book I was hovering at 7pm. I've now got to work out family logistics Smile. Glad someone mentioned shopping as that will be a big plus for DH when he's told we're going to Portsmouth.

I've also finished all crochet projects as of yesterday. DD is finally getting her blanket that I was meant to finish for Christmas, but decided better do for her birthday instead. I am now going to learn some new stuff - more complicated patterns and continuous joins are currently on the list.

I'm really looking forward to meeting people. I usually sport the dragged through a hedge backwards/ not ironed look Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/04/2018 10:29

I've bought a ticket 😱 I'll worry about logistics later. Grin

MrsJonesAndMe · 18/04/2018 12:30

Feeling stupidly excited! Grin

Rubytuesday2980 · 18/04/2018 21:59

Hello, thanks to everyone for sending me the address. I sent 1x12" and 3x6" squares on Monday, but just found the card that was supposed to go in with them. So, the unmarked yellow/pink/green/blue stripy squares are from me for Chernobyl.

If I start now, you might get a blanket next year...

KnottyAndPistey · 19/04/2018 10:19

So happy folk are coming!

We had decided that if no one came we’d drink the bar dry and practise cartwheels

glad you like it - - the pressure, the pressure ! Grin
They are all lovely .

SpiralArchitect · 19/04/2018 11:45

Pistey - please tell me my squares have arrived!! I posted them second class on 10th April in a re-purposed M&S bag...

I'm having a massive panic (again...) not least because my squares for Lottie's blanket were in the same parcel.

Sorry to sound so needy!

KnottyAndPistey · 19/04/2018 13:18

They are here!

Sorry it’s taking us about 2 weeks at the mo. I scheduled 80+ posts the other day for today, Friday and Saturday and I know your beautiful treasure is in there. Am away this week back on Friday. Then I’ll be in to update for Lottie. Sorry it’s all taking so long xx

Gin

No worries - I know you must be busy. I just tend to panic, especially after Zing's beautiful squares went missing in the post a few years back! I need to relax...and remember that the back room of the PO is not a black hole that swallows up parcels never to be seen again Grin

You are total Star s xx

MrsJonesAndMe · 19/04/2018 21:40

Amazing work!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/04/2018 21:50

I owe you a drink in September, I packed up ,y squares in a rush and forgot to sew the ends in Blush

SpiralArchitect · 20/04/2018 10:32

Huge sigh of relief - they were on FB last night, not in the PO black hole!

Five - I nearly did that with my Snugs squares. I thought I had one to finish off before sending and then realised a couple of others had to be done just as I was packing them up...
