We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Evening all!

Belated thanks to TwitterQueen1, bookbook and MrsH for the help with the ends, obvs I didn't listen carefully and left them all until the end - lesson learned there!

Please can somebody PM me the address in time for tomorrow morning, I tried messaging the OP as suggested, but I think everyone is a bit buried under a heap of gorgeous squares...

VintageTeacup · 15/04/2018 21:25

Just got to sort out school uniforms for tomorrow and then I can get my squares parcelled up ready for morning. No idea how many there are but they'll be on the way tomorrow.

bookbook · 15/04/2018 21:58

@Rubytuesday2980 - sent address
peskies are the worst bit !

DropZoneOne · 16/04/2018 00:14

Blanket parcelled up and postage paid (never had to squeeze a whole blanket into a mailing bag before, was trickier than expected!). Realised once firmly sealed that I hadn't taken a photo of the finished thing, only in parts - oops.

Have awful feeling I've put wrong address on though - Ted Towers - should it be the south coast for Chernobs?

DropZoneOne · 16/04/2018 00:17

Ignore me ... just seen Ted Towers on OP ... phew! Time for bed I think.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/04/2018 19:09

😁. I have my 🎟

Very excited!

bookbook · 16/04/2018 20:19

so do I Chipping - Grin

Spindelina · 16/04/2018 20:34

Me too! Practicalities of how to get there and so forth to be worked out nearer the time!

NorksAreMessy · 16/04/2018 20:47

Darlings, I have just sent a very few slightly substandard squares for some poor, unfortunate constructioneer to try and squash into a blanket.
Good luck :)

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/04/2018 22:22

bookbook Yay!!! I’m definitely making a weekend of it, are you? (Or are you yet to convince DH?)

Spindelina Great news!

Norks. I’m sure they’ll be perfect! Are you coming to WoollyHugathon?!

Spindelina · 17/04/2018 07:42

Ria did your spice arrive? If not, I’ve got a ball and a bit in my stash that you would be welcome to.

bookbook · 17/04/2018 08:53

Chipping - making a long weekend - setting off on Friday and breaking the journey half way down :) ( it sort of helped that I reminded DH one of his friends moved to IOW .- hopefully he can spend the Sunday catching up )
Ooh , will be lovely to see you and Spin - hoping there are a few more we 'know' too
I'm a bit surprised, but it seems there are still some tickets left this morning ! ( I was hovering at 7.00 last night Grin )

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/04/2018 09:20

bookbook well remembered about DH’s friend in the IOW! I was refreshing furiously! There were zero sold when I clicked, but by the time I’d got my ticket, checked my email and gone back in 13 had gone. I was surprised there were still 25 when I went to bed. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone, it’s been AGES since I went to any type of MN meetup. Friends, Wool, Gin...what’s not to like?!
(I’ll do everyone a favour & keep my Gin intake to a minimum p, but I’ll make up for it in rum or wine! Gin is complete Mother’s Ruin for me!)

I hope people post to say they have tickets, it’ll be nice to know who to look forward to meeting!

MadisonAvenue · 17/04/2018 11:20

I so wish I could join you but we're away at a wedding that weekend.

SpiralArchitect · 17/04/2018 15:39

Echoing Madison - I would love to go but we are off to a major family do in London that weekend Sad

DropZoneOne · 17/04/2018 17:50

I'm coming to the Woolly meet! It'll be my first MN meet, will be great to put faces to names.

bookbook · 17/04/2018 18:02

It's my first too Drop - it will be lovely :) . I will be the old lady, who looks like she has been dragged through a hedge backwards...Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 17/04/2018 19:37

Madison. A wedding?

Spiral A ‘Family Do’?

Seriously? This’ll be WAY better. Send DH’s off to represent you both.

😂

What a shame, I was really hoping you were both coming. Oh well, we will have to make it so brilliant (and as stress free as we can) that K&P decide to run another one soon after.

(Sulks in the corner)

DropZoneOne. Yayyyy fab! For the weekend irbthe day?!

bookbook I’ll be the one who doesn’t quite make 5ft & is now practically spherical. Looking hot, bothered and like I’ve been chased through the park then dragged through the bush backwards. I simply cannot do chic, sophisticated or even well put together 😖. I’ve given up any pretence.

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/04/2018 20:25

I've found some WiFi I moved house two weeks ago and BT promised we'd be connected by the first weekend...

I've got squares and I'll post them first class tomorrow. Sorry K&P. They are turquoise and I've got 2 x 12" and a 6" if that helps with sorting.

I'd love to come to the hugathon if there are still tickets available. I just need to check how things stand domestically I think they can't function without me

Spindelina · 17/04/2018 20:31

I’ll be the one who looks a bit lost and disconcerted trying to do crochet without a baby attached!

bookbook · 17/04/2018 20:35

Woolly - there were still some this morning , fingers crossed !
