We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

I'm sure DH would think poorly of me if I suggested getting and fitting a roof box when we're off in the morning! I could explain that it was urgently required for the wool I wanted to take but I fear it would end badly 😂

Spindelina · 15/02/2018 19:37
Grin

Okki, love your blanket.

bookbook · 15/02/2018 19:37

Have a wonderful time :)
I was just sorting my file of patterns, and came across the knitted 'lizard' pattern you kindly shared back last year. Do you knit at all now? I rarely do - just the special blankets. Crotchet has taken over completely!

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 19:48

I haven't knitted in about 12 months! I'm still half way through a scarf/shrug that I started before Easter last year that I've got tucked in my woolly corner somewhere 😊

Woolly Hugs is a far better thing to be doing, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

MadisonAvenue · 15/02/2018 21:28

Okki I meant to say that your blanket is gorgeous!

I haven't knitted in a year either. I think I impressed/surprised my mother the other day. I crocheted a scarf for myself and was wearing it when I called in to see them at the weekend. Mom said she liked it and had I crocheted it. I said that I had and she laughed and said " no you haven't!" My husband back me up, and she took it in to show my Dad - "look at what our Madison's made!" Shortly afterwards my sister arrived and one of the first things Mom said was "have you seen Madison's scarf?" Since then our oldest has called in to see them and they were telling him about the scarf too lol.

Witch have a lovely time - I'm picturing a roof box bursting open with yarn Grin Wouldn't that be lovely!

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 23:21

I wonder if all my wool would fit in a roof box??

I would have to put the roof box on the dining table though as I can't reach our car roof...............

🤔

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 23:23

I can see a lot of scarfs being required Madison - that's Christmas sorted! 😁 I hope you're proud of it as it sounds like it was nicer than a shop bought one!

Foxsox · 15/02/2018 23:33

I'm in

bootle96 · 16/02/2018 08:53

Okki, I love your blanket. Jux, I've got a few colours, I've just finished a blanket for ds1 that was a multicoloured stripy thing in 12 colours and half of them are on the list for woolly hugs. Ds2 also wants a blanket now (although the awkward child wants it to be made of triangles!) I have ordered some wool for his blanket and may have accidentally ordered a few extra colours I can use for squares (any excuse to buy more wool.) I have a free evening tonight so I'm planning to get started on a square.

3EyedRaven · 17/02/2018 16:54

First square completed!!

SallyLockhartsDog · 17/02/2018 20:40

Shock wow 3Eyed that is amazing!!

I'm determined to start crocheting tonight - you have inspired me!!

Jux · 17/02/2018 21:45

3Eyed, gorgeous!

Bootle the wool is turning us all into dishonest women! "Oh, dh, I've had that old wool for aaaaaages....." Grin

SallyLockhartsDog · 17/02/2018 22:26

My first attempt at crochet....

Woolly Hugs. Chernobyl 2018 is HERE!!!
Spindelina · 18/02/2018 08:59

Jux DH has asked me to make dust covers for his guitar pedals. So I had to buy more wool. But then I had to make the order up to £25. It’s all his fault, honest!

Sally good start!

Jux · 18/02/2018 12:39

What a good idea, Spin! I shall run that past dh - he has 30+ guitars and heaven knows how many bits that go with them. I could make plectrum holders and all sorts. Pop guards! Twirly bits to wind round his speaker stands. (He just wouldn't let me though Sad.)

Sally fab! Are you going to do a circle or are you going to work into a chain? (I always found it easier to start with a circle.)

SallyLockhartsDog · 18/02/2018 18:42

jux that's a really good question - I have no idea Grin. I didn't actually know what to do after I finished the first row of single stitch..Confused

bookbook · 18/02/2018 22:14

evening all, just popping in to catch up with everyone. Just two more squares to go and our blanket is ready to construct.
I'm feeling almost jealous - we only have 5 guitars in our house - 4 hung on walls and one in a cupboard ..Grin
3EyedRaven - that is gorgeous.
I will own up to ordering wool twice this week Blush - in my defence , some of it is to make a little car blanket for my DGS after he wanted to keep the Little Hug I am just finishing :)

Jux · 18/02/2018 23:33

So what did you do, Sally?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 18/02/2018 23:49

Hi all

Bootle. If you’re a bit strapped for time you could do DS2’s blanket in CTC changing colour at the midpoint, that should meet the ‘triangle’ criteria without having to actually do triangles!?

Katescurios · 19/02/2018 17:52

My local wool shop have just started a loyalty card whee you get a stamp for every £10 you spend and when the cards full you get £10 off your next purchase.

Now I have to buy enough to fill the card so I can get a bargain. Its sound financial sense I tell you!

SallyLockhartsDog · 19/02/2018 19:59

Jux I have put it in a drawer and not looked at it again. The tutorial I was following just stopped after the 1st row of single stitch.

I think I may start again tonight with the start of a granny square...or am I running before I can walk?

Spindelina · 19/02/2018 20:33

Sally look up Bella Coxo on YouTube. She’s got a video tutorial for a granny square, and one for C2C. Both of those are easy to carry on once you get going.

SallyLockhartsDog · 19/02/2018 21:04

Thanks Spindle, I have been recommended Bella Coco by Woolly too so I will definitely have a look tonight.

I love the look of C2C but will try a granny square first.

SallyLockhartsDog · 19/02/2018 22:17

Hmmm....it's a start! Will try again tomorrow Smile. I used Bella Coco on YouTube.
