We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Hello !

  • back from my holidays , so budge up Grin . I need to get cracking. Spin - you are a hooking machine - how on earth do you find the time? I do need to finish off a couple of projects first . Squares for the special MN blankets , and a Little Hug that I took away with me as I didn't take enough yarn to finish it - . Then just another 4 x 12" squares and I can get on to construct the blanket DD and I are doing.
Okki · 11/02/2018 19:38

Welcome back bookbook. Hope you had a fabulous time.

Spindelina · 11/02/2018 20:15

Welcome back, book!

I spend a lot of time underneath a sleeping baby!

NotAChristmasCakePop · 11/02/2018 21:38

I've made a 12" square over the weekend!

Jux · 11/02/2018 23:55

Spin*, I got a free pattern! Thank you xxx It's 'Kaylee' I think. There was a print out of it so you could colour it in. I gave dd samples of most of the Chernobyl wool I have and have asked her to colour it in how she thinks it would work best..........

Jux · 11/02/2018 23:56

Blimey, my grammar! I am ashamed of the last sentence of that post ^^ Grin

Jux · 11/02/2018 23:58

Welcome back book! I hope you were somewhere so nice and interesting that running out of wool was a secondary sorrow!

CakePop, well done. 12" is no mean feat!

KnottyAndPistey · 12/02/2018 10:02

Morning lov4s, welcome back book!

Half term here so on a bit of a slow, but have been photographing the craft for our Spring craft sale, cooooooooo!!! So lucky, folk are totally amazing! Funds raised from it will be going to support this project, think in terms of joining yarn, delivery etc!

It is a beautiful day here, so going to do a bit more, just need to sort the chaos of home!

Hello, thanks Jux I'm really pleased with myself as I only started after Christmas and half bricking it that mine won't hold up to standard!

Will see if I can knock out some more 6"ers to go with the colour scheme and hoping the fairies who turn them into blankets will be able to do something amazing with it all!

Jux · 12/02/2018 18:26

CakePop, brilliant! I only started last year, and had been doing it about the same amount of time when Chernobyl started as you have this year Grin. I am trying to do the free pattern I just got through Spin's coupon code alert ^^ which involves things like Back Post Double Treble. Honestly, last year I wouldn't have believed I could do that, but I can now!

It's incredibly satisfying, isn't it? You wait, you'll be knocking out those 6"ers and looking for challenges in no time!

KnottyAndPistey · 13/02/2018 09:11

We've had an offer of three balls of Stylecraft that would fit in this project, would anyone like to take them on?

Thank you so much to Eddierussett Thanks

I'm now concentrating on Chernobyl, I need to get my squares done and mailed to K&P before we go on holiday at the end of March.

Jux and CakePop I've been crocheting since last year's Chernobyl started and I attempted interlocking circles the other day and they worked well. A year ago I was thinking that granny squares were beyond me!

Welcome back book! Did you have a lovely time?

bootle96 · 14/02/2018 09:03

Hi, can anyone join in? I crochet and have got some style craft special dk left over from a blanket I've just finished for ds1. I never seem to have enough time to crochet so I don't know how many I can get done, but I can definitely manage a few squares. Could someone give me the address to post them to please?

Spindelina · 14/02/2018 10:47

bootle, the more the merrier!

PM KnottyAndPistey to get the address.

Jux · 14/02/2018 16:54

Hi bootle, pull up a chair.... Grin

Even if you don't get any done in time for this year, you can have them on hand for next year! What colours have you got?

Okki · 14/02/2018 17:30

I've managed a blanket this year. Hope to get some additional squares done as well. It's a bit wonky, but full of love.

Okki - that is lovely!
Me and DD are on square 17 of 20 for our joint blanket -. I seem to be running to catch up, so many things on the go.
Madison - it was lovely thanks - a bit cooler than normal, which suited me down to the ground . I ran out of the yarn I was using for a Little Hug, so ended up buying some unknown DK in white and got an Angel Hug done while out there. Not long before you go !
welcome bootle - always room for a small one Grin , and every square helps

SallyLockhartsDog · 15/02/2018 14:59

okki that is lovely!!

DD breaking her arm has interrupted my first foray in to crochet! Hopefully I will get a chance over the weekend. I'm still chugging along with the knitting...painfully slowly Grin I'm hoping to do 4 X 6inch sq at least.

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 15:27

I'm away soon too - I wonder how much wool I can get away with before I get a raised eyebrow from DH 😁

MrsJonesAndMe · 15/02/2018 16:01

Hi, I've done 2 6" ones to go with the 12" so far, looking to do some more...

MadisonAvenue · 15/02/2018 17:44

So pleased you had a lovely time book! Cooler weather would've suited me too - I don't do hot, hence why we always go away out of season!
36 days to wait now!

Witch I'm not sure if I'm going to get away with taking any, we're trying to just take carry on bags only.

bookbook · 15/02/2018 18:53

not long then Madison :)
Witch - erm we took 2 x carry ons and one suitcase. I managed to pack - 2 x 150 gm Candy swirl for a lIttle hug ( ran out ) 2 x 200gm of yarn cakes for a Billies blanket and 2 x 100 gm to make hats, just in case I ran out. I ended up buying white to make an Angel hug Blush. I have an understanding husband Grin
Cake - going well, it does get addictive though!

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 18:53

We're doing the seaside this time, which means fitting everything in the car won't mobility scooter. If we were flying I could take more!

WitchDancer · 15/02/2018 18:55

Grrr autocorrect - with my scooter....

bookbook · 15/02/2018 18:55

Roof box? Grin
