Surely the best corner of the Mumsnet, all are welcome here and if seen this for the first time, join us, you'll be glad you did. This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

A bit of background
We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Gin

We have several previous threads now, have a look at the Woolly Hugs topic.

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection dates are October 28th and then January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

We start this new thread having sent out 46 Candy's Hugs to wonderful women, extraordinary, thank you.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I've just been reading it - I am completely blown away by how much has been achieved! It has been an honour to be just a tiny, tiny part of Woolly Hugs.

At the risk of outing myself, my family were honoured to receive a Woolly Hug this year on behalf of my father in law who had terminal cancer. It was a truly terrible experience, made just a little easier by knowing there was love in every stitch in that blanket.

Thank you K & P for everything you do - what we know about and the millions of things we don't even dream of you doing.

Also a thank you to Candy, who I hope is looking down on us with that big grin with a pint and fag in hand, for inspiring me to take up my needles and wool. Oh, and not forgetting BookBoook for getting me hooked on crotchet!

Here's hoping for a Peaceful 2018 💕

bookbook · 31/12/2017 12:11

I saw this first on the fb feed, but just want to say I am so pleased to be part of this community . It gladdens my heart . :)
I also want to thank K&P for all their hard work and commitment
Hah Witch - - I am hooked too - the knitting needles don't get much of a look -in now!
I hope 2018 is a good one for everyone - peace, love and good wishes .
now , where is my crochet hook .......?

Sairelou · 31/12/2017 16:22

Hello everyone, I need some crochet advice! I've been doing this one for kinship, it's going to be a 12" square. However I think I've messed up somewhere when I was following the pattern at the circle to square stage Confused it looks quite wonky! I still has another 3" to go until it is up to size, can I do anything to fix it? Or shall I just keep going with my trebles and hope it flattens out as I go?
Here was the pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/itsy-bitsy-spider-5

Sairelou · 31/12/2017 16:22

Sorry, pic of the wonky square

Nice square Sairelou. I think Stitchit has the right of it, it does look like the last of those loops at that corner might be smaller than in other corners. I can’t advise on how to correct it, I’m sorry, not because it’s irretrievable but because I’m not experienced enough. While frogging sounds drastic, I do find it’s never as painful as I expect (and I’ve done loads of it!) Grin

Spindelina · 31/12/2017 21:04

It looks to me like the stitches at the red arrow are different (dc instead of tr?) to the ones at the yellow arrow - the yellow ones being more like the other sides.

Spindelina · 31/12/2017 21:05

I mean the stitches between the two loopy bits, iyswim?

Spindelina · 31/12/2017 21:27

(Though you have to look pretty closely to see anything asymmetric about it, and I reckon it’d flatten out if you kept going)

(having said that though, I’d frog back to the mistake myself, but I’m a perfectionist.)

bookbook · 31/12/2017 21:48

ooh, I was thinking slightly differently - poor Sairelou - I wonder if you have counted where the loops go slightly wrong. There are 12 rays going out, and the loops are not evenly spaced between/around them . My guess is there are more stitches between the bottom right to top right loopy corners, and the top is right from top right to top left, and a stitch or two short from top left to bottom left IYSWIM.
But, saying all that, I think it will pull out square when constructed .

Sairelou · 31/12/2017 22:32

Thank you everyone. You are right Spindelina, they are dc instead of trebles, because I ran out of stitches! I counted the previous round of stitches and have no idea what happened as I have the right amount of stitches on the last circular round!

I think I will have another look at it in the morning, see if I can find where I've gone wrong with fresh eyes. If I can't find it then I might try what Stitchit has suggested.
Thank you Smile

Spindelina · 01/01/2018 09:48

You’re starting in the yellow corner, right? Comparing your work to the picture with the pattern, I think you are using up too many stitches for the loops - specifically the middle one. I think you’ve done your chain, then joined it (slst or sc or whatever it is) in the next stitch instead of the same stitch. That way you are using up an extra stitch in each corner - by the tine you’ve got to the red corner, the spoke isn’t quite in the middle of the middle loop and then the spoke in the next corner is even further behind and so on.

Happy New Year to all my Wonderful Woolly friends! Here's to a year with no knots in our wool, patterns that turn out right first time, and houses that clean themselves so we can work! 🍸

Sairelou · 01/01/2018 10:47

You, know what Spindelina, you're blinking right! I was going in to the next stitch on my corners instead of the same stitch! Thank you for finding my error Smile Now to fix the thing so it stops annoying me!

WitchDancer · 01/01/2018 11:05

I love a happy ending! Glad you got it sorted SaireLou

Spindelina · 01/01/2018 12:58

Gotta love a mystery solved. It’ll be annoying taking it back, but very satisfying to get it right!

(And the pattern is now on my to do list Grin)

bookbook · 01/01/2018 13:05

well spotted Spin - you found the mistake ! I could see what was wrong, but couldn't work out why.
It is a lovely pattern :)

I had to rummage for it - it was easy to miss! I'm still working on my slinky squares but have given up for the night as I seem to have lost the ability to count 😜
