Welcome to the most beautiful corner of Mumsnet, here the love and support is boundless, these are the folk you need to be around, come and join us, you'll not regret it :) Our inspiration comes from the wonderful Zombie, a true legend who continues to inspire us.

We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

So many blankets with beautiful women going through treatment now because of your love and support. Thank you doesn't even come close. xx

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine Gin

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, maybe a bit unsure, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Tw1inset hope you're recovering well Flowers such a lovely picture, thank you so much for sharing it with us Smile

K&P thanks for clarifying re: little hug/white yarn Smile I shall crack on with it.

Norm here's a pic of what I did last night - I like the yarn and I like the stitch, but I don't think they go together particularly well. A lot of the colour changes get lost in the foundation chains and the shells aren't standing out quite as they should, so I think it's going to get frogged and I'll do something more uniform (I've got my eye on the call the midwife blanket pattern maybe). The shell pattern will return though Wink

About time for another progress pic...nearly done...

So many wonderful projects to be part of. I've got a few more squares planned for Candy's Hugs, then I think it'll be Juan's blanket and tacking my random stash for refugee stuff. Unless the call goes out for Chernobyl!

Raptor I agree with you. Lovely wool and a beautiful pattern but they are fighting with each other! Do you have a link to the shell pattern? I love it!

Spin you continue to amaze me Star

Thanks Book xx

Raptorina - thought I recognised it. I did that pattern for an Angel Hug 2 years ago. It was fun to do and quite effective even in one colour.

Really didn't sleep well last night. Very glad that my general sense of wellbeing (which might otherwise be lost in feeling tired and ankleless) is buoyed by pride in having knitted the second edge of a mitred-corner square instead. Who needs sleep when you have wool, eh?

(might also have done a 2am wool warehouse order...)

NormansNipple · 27/04/2017 17:34

Thanks Raptor

Purple your blanket looks beautiful.

Spin FlowersGinCake (delete as appropriate) to help with your wellbeing!

Spindelina · 27/04/2017 18:27

Thanks! I'll take the Flowers and Cake. Midwife would probably disapprove of Gin, sadly. Though I did have some of DH's Wine with my pizza for dinner. That was worth it Grin.

NormansNipple · 27/04/2017 19:36

If it's someone else's wine it doesn't count! Wink

bookbook · 27/04/2017 21:35

evening!
thanks for the link to the shell pattern raptor - thats my next Little Hug pattern sorted.
Spin - have you got to the stage where it just is not comfy in bed, even laid on your side with a pillow between knees and too hot....

Spindelina · 27/04/2017 22:11

book I'm not physically uncomfortable (yet!) - it's my brain that's the problem. It's gone into night-time instant-alert mode several months earlier than required. Did the same last time. It's not too bad really - I know exactly what's causing it and that it'll get better (albeit with the arrival of a different sleep thief!).

WitchDancer · 28/04/2017 21:12

Evening all. I'm having a break from knitting my wrap and have done a square I spotted in a magazine. It's meant to be the top part to a pin cushion but I think it will work as a square 😁

bookbook · 28/04/2017 22:34

gosh, thats pretty Witch - I am doing a new design , and have not quite finished it tonight - too busy on here , rather than concentrating!

WitchDancer · 28/04/2017 22:44

Thank you Book. I'm strangely proud of it 😁

Spindelina · 29/04/2017 06:58

Lovely square, witch.

bookbook · 29/04/2017 13:20

Afternoon!
I finished my square this morning.
It reminds me of flamenco dresses for little ones
Its in Saffron/Spice/Tomato
on a side note - DH says its his favourite so far....Grin - he likes yellow....

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 29/04/2017 13:48

Lovely squares! Those interlocking circles look very complex Witch

I like Saffron/Spice together Book and a fab 3d effect on that square also looks complicated Lime goes well with them, it sort of becomes very citrusy in an Opal Fruits Starburst for the young people type way.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way thru my little hug (just did C2C in the end) and then I need to think about what border to put on it.

bookbook · 29/04/2017 14:20

It was actually very easy Raptor - its one of those repeating patterns that you can just keep on with. I stopped at 6" and just put a slightly more solid edge around it to help the construction crew

Tipped Bavarian

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 29/04/2017 17:01

Ooh thanks Smile I'll add it to the to do list Smile

CraftyGirly90 · 29/04/2017 17:07

Well I've had some bad news. During work last night I went and fell and broke my ankle so that means lots of time off work. Just my luck 😭 xx

Jux · 29/04/2017 18:00

Oh no!! *Crafty, how simply terrible Grin

Seriously, I hope it's not too painful and mends quickly.
