Welcome to the most beautiful corner of Mumsnet, here the love and support is boundless, these are the folk you need to be around, come and join us, you'll not regret it :) Our inspiration comes from the wonderful Zombie, a true legend who continues to inspire us.

We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

So many blankets with beautiful women going through treatment now because of your love and support. Thank you doesn't even come close. xx

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine Gin

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, maybe a bit unsure, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Hola, I found you! Flying home tonight and have a mini pile of squares to post when we wake up tomorrow. They may smell slightly of sun cream 😜

VintageTeacup · 20/04/2017 16:22

Peskie, Peskie, Peskie, ooooh what's this, I followed peskies and found a whole new cosy, wooltastic thread.

Cheep as others have said plain squares are needed to break up the blankets otherwise it could go from ooh pretty to ooh my eyes.
Norman another fab square, love those colours.
Madison that square is gorgeous.
Bear, yay for baby bears good news and yay to potty training, here have a spare roll of regina blitz.

VittysCardigan · 20/04/2017 16:50

Followed the peskies & waft of gin. Currently working on a blanket, I love the colours but look forward to getting back on Candy colour riot soon!

MrsDilligaf · 20/04/2017 17:59

Checking in!!

Hooks ahoy.

Am feeling meh...Sad and like a big bratty child. I'm going to cheer myself up on Tuesday by spending a lot of my birthday money on wool. I am. I'm going to buy all the wool, move to abe isolated cottage by myself and drink tea and crochet. Oh yes I am.

Bah Gin, Cake & Wine.

MNHQ - where has the chocolate icon gone? Put it back IMMEDIATELY

Hmm
VittysCardigan · 20/04/2017 18:25

That sounds like heaven MrsD

MadisonAvenue · 20/04/2017 18:57

I like that Vitty

MrsD that sounds idyllic. Somewhere secluded and a huge supply of wool. Happy Birthday for whenever it is!

bookbook · 20/04/2017 19:06

Evening!
Maison -that is a lovely flower!
Witch - hope you have an extra coat after being somewhere warm ! I like the idea of sunscreened squares :)
Vitty - thats a lovely colour combo
MrsD - wool buying is a good restorative to feeling meh - hope you perk up :)
I have cracked and will be starting a crotchet 12" tonight - I was going to knit.....

book crochet crochet crochet. It's the ONLY way!

NormansNipple · 20/04/2017 19:37

Cheep they're a bit pricey but lots of us like clover amour hooks. You'll find them very comfortable if you -inevitably- get addicted to crochet.

VittysCardigan · 20/04/2017 20:11

Norman - it is indeed the cozy stripe. I chose the colours based on some gorgeous wool I saw in my local shop. I am doing random stripes but didn't trust myself so used this site www.biscuitsandjam.com/stripe_maker.php

It has progressed a bit since the las pic. DD2 already has her eye on it!

Vitty I spy a large basket of wool in the background too Grin

MadisonAvenue · 20/04/2017 20:19

Cheep I'm with Norman in recommending a Clover Amour hook. They're around £5-£6 depending on where you get them from. I had mine from Amazon but they're on EBay too and some wool shops stock them.

VittysCardigan · 20/04/2017 20:27

Guilty as charged Madison the bag is full too and have bought since. Grin

bookbook · 20/04/2017 21:15

well, I did the 12" square - except it turned into a 6" Hmm - I left off three rounds, but that would only have taken it to 7.5". so as it looked nice as it was, I left it at that . I have already used up my 6 pics on the Chernobyl thread, so can't post.
I may have just topped up on wool - only a few balls - Dsis in Law was ordering, so it was only fair to make up the order to carriage paid. DD ordered the Sirdar colour wheel in 'follow the rainbow' and it looks gorgeous....

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 20/04/2017 21:23

My pile of squares is getting nice and tall (and once again, I've left all the peskies to deal with at the end which I'll regret Wink )

Lovely squares everybody Smile

MadisonAvenue · 20/04/2017 21:28

Grin Vitty

I'm holding off until next time to send my squares, I had donated wool so want to use that and then send all of the squares together so that the donor can see what became of her generous donation. I have 24 6" squares so far.

CraftyGirly90 · 20/04/2017 23:19

That trail of peskies is a wonderful thing when you get a little lost. I have yet to use an amour clover hook as my local wool shop sells them for about £10 (which is a little more than I can afford on a hook), of anyone has any 4mm amours clovers going spare send one my way Wink xx

Jux · 21/04/2017 00:01

Thanks for the Peskie Trail. Comforting to be back here. More beauties!

Just finishing off complicated cardi for dd, and then I'll finish off the Candy Wool I have, and see what my finances allow me to do at Wool Warehouse. Think I'll try to do what book did - choose 3 toning colours and do lots of variants. Love those Variations

On a Theme!

bookbook · 21/04/2017 08:51

Morning!
how did the Drops work up Jux ?- it always ends up differently to how you imagine! -

MadisonAvenue · 21/04/2017 09:00

Morning all! Just back from being walked through the woods and over the common for 4 miles by the dog Grin

MadisonAvenue · 21/04/2017 10:18

I was looking at books in Smiths yesterday, could've spent a small fortune!

WitchDancer · 21/04/2017 10:34

Morning all! It's flipping cold here, can I please go back to crotcheting in the sunshine? ❄️
