Welcome to the most beautiful corner of Mumsnet, here the love and support is boundless, these are the folk you need to be around, come and join us, you'll not regret it :) Our inspiration comes from the wonderful Zombie, a true legend who continues to inspire us.

We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

So many blankets with beautiful women going through treatment now because of your love and support. Thank you doesn't even come close. xx

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine Gin

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, maybe a bit unsure, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks bookbook. I will leave it there as I am happy with it. Your square is fab.

Jux · 22/05/2017 22:33

I love that blanket, Chaz.

Book the meadow is such a pretty colour, and that's a really pretty pattern. Is it from Ravelry or Jan Eaton?

bookbook · 22/05/2017 22:37

Its Ravelry Jux - she's done a few in the same vein, so may do a few more - I did have to add an extra row of trebles to get it to 6" mind!
www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/joe-7
Luckily, the pattern has UK and US terms :)

MadisonAvenue · 24/05/2017 13:25

I've got a parcel all taped up, addressed and ready to go. I've put my squares for Juan in there too, I couldn't fit the Little Hugs in the packaging I had so I'll continue working on projects and send another parcel with all of those in.

MadisonAvenue · 24/05/2017 13:31

K&P hope this photo will be okay, I remember you asking for one of the squares once the donor wool was used up. It was such a generous donation so please thank the lady for me!

Just a quick pop on here
Has everyone seen the call out for squares to make Little Hugs for Manchester? ( on their fb page) It may be they have posted somewhere, just thought I would put it on here too
⭐️ Little Hugs for Manchester ⭐️
Urgent appeal, please can anyone help us ? We had to do something and have been speaking with the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital about sending Little Hug blankets to children and families there which they have said they would love. We are so glad. We do have some blankets already here, but we need to make some bigger blankets too (Chernob size) asap, can anyone help us in a very quick turnaround?

Please, we need 12 inch ideally (or 6 inch) squares in Stylecraft SSDK, in the palette below which we are calling Love and Light. Squares will go into joint blankets. Knit and crochet equally welcome. 4mm hook or needles.

Last posting Wednesday 7th June, or before if poss. Please look at the website for all crafting info. Thank you. X

Just an update for everyone. I got the stitches out yesterday which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I also got a new fibreglass cast put on which is much lighter and easier. I can now concentrate properly on squares for as many causes as I can x

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/05/2017 12:05

Good news Crafty glad to hear you're doing well Flowers

I saw the Manchester info on Facebook Book I think most of my current squares are the right colours so I can divert them Smile I've got plenty of the right colours in stock so that's good.

I'm on a little bit of a go slow at the moment, I've picked up a crochet injury (RSI in my crochet hand) so I need to not over do it for a little while. I've picked up a new soft grip hook this morning which may help (my hooks are just cheapy ones off Amazon) and then I noticed the current issue of Simply Crochet (58) has a bamboo hook set as a free gift so I bought that too. I'm hoping if I find a decent hook then it'll sort itself out.

MadisonAvenue · 25/05/2017 12:18

Book thank you, I hadn't seen that. Manchester is my second home as me and the youngest are there a couple of times a month for football and I've felt pretty helpless these last few days. I've got some of those colours so I'll start on it straight away.

Excellent news Crafty - take care! How long will the cast be on for?

CraftyGirly90 · 25/05/2017 12:44

Madison this new cast is on for another 5 weeks then the physio starts to be able to walk again properly x

WitchDancer · 25/05/2017 16:20

Is it worth putting the Manchester Hugs on a new thread? I'm also on a Hugs go slow as I've been knitting something for me for a change (it doesn't half feel weird knitting now!) but I have got some granny squares made up in some of the colours specified. Maybe some of those could be diverted?

Jux · 25/05/2017 16:56

Hi WHers! I've not been able to get on this threads for ages but today, or perhaps it's only now, the scrolling probs are letting me on!

Can you all tell me what colour you would put with Lobelia and Duck Egg? DH thinks Bright Pink but I'm not so sure. Help me!!! Grin

Lovely to see you all again, and to look back at all the squares and blankets here.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/05/2017 18:48

Saffron? or maybe Violet? Smile

(P.S. I've had to use google chrome for ages because of scrolling issues with internet explorer)

Yiayoula · 25/05/2017 18:57

Thanks for posting that, book : I lurk the MN WH threads most days but not often on the WH Facebook .
So pleased we are doing something for Manchester.

Will be diverting some squares from my Candy stash ( am sure she would approve) and get cracking on some more tonight with a view to sending them before the bank holiday : assume it's Teddington Towers?

bookbook · 25/05/2017 19:06

evening!
just got in and had a bite to eat, now ready to hook.
Crafty , so you can hop around now? Will you ned to go back to work with the cast ?
Raptor - RSI is no joke, hope the new hook helps - I have a clover armour one, and it is a joy to use, but (fingers crossed )I don't have many problems with knitting or crotchet . ( Probably due to slow and steady !)
Madison - glad to help, I was just having 5 minutes and saw it.
Its now on the Little Hugs thread ( Billies Blankets /Babettes Little Hugs)
Its a very short time frame, so sidelineing the Candys and Little Hug to do as many as I can . DD has just ordered some wool for us to share , hope it gets here quickly.
Jux - you managed to get here !- I would do saffron too, though depending on what you are doing it for, the citron would work too I think,.
(Read the thread about scrolling - I haven't had any problems, but I use Chrome , like Raptor)

bookbook · 25/05/2017 19:09

Yia - x post with you I'm sure I read somewhere that it's the Chernobyl address. I will see if I can find where I saw it

CraftyGirly90 · 25/05/2017 19:40

Book I can hop about in the flat with a zimmer frame, it always takes my breath away though. No, I've been signed of work until July as I'm non weight bearing on this foot until the cast comes off x

MrsHathaway · 25/05/2017 20:03

A reminder that the symbol for Manchester is the bee: faithful and hardworking, with a powerful sting when attacked. 🐝

Will check stash later and churn some out. Will strongarm knitting club tomorrow and hope to make a decent parcel in good time before the deadline.

Worked in Manchester until SAHPing and go for easy days out as it's on our railway line. We have been away for a family funeral (and just got back a couple of hours ago) and received sympathy and solidarity from people of all backgrounds, as "locals" to the event. It feels very unreal though as fortunately we are unconnected ourselves.

Yiayoula · 25/05/2017 20:19

Thanks, book : if it is Chernobyl , could you let me have the full address please as never posted to that one.

Seems like all our needles and hooks are working fast and furious tonight ! - amazing sense of community on here. Smile

bookbook · 25/05/2017 20:39

sent it Yia :)

Yiayoula · 25/05/2017 21:00

Got it, book ! - many thanks.

Time for a cuppa , and might forage for some Hobnobs while am about it, purely to keep my ( knitting ) strength up of course !

bookbook · 25/05/2017 21:07
  • I'm having chocolate..... :)
MrsHathaway · 25/05/2017 21:28

Manchester link says Tedd.

bookbook · 25/05/2017 21:40

ooh, may have to check - I read this on the other thread-

'Does anyone know where we send the Manchester squares to?
Add message | Report | Message poster KnottyAndPistey Thu 25-May-17 15:22:01

MrsHathaway · 25/05/2017 21:47
