Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Thanks book but I can't take credit it's attic24! I thought it would look nice in my living room though. Hope you've had a lovely day with your DGS. I intend to learn how to start a round doing a standing stitch. I also need to learn the magic circle! So much I want to do and so little time...

I love the squares with a spiral in the middle on blanket 54.

Treasures · 26/04/2017 01:38

I've fallen in love with the Sophie's Garden pattern which I'd come across before but thought it was way out of my league! Turns out it's a bit easier than it looks.

I've had some time on my hands so I've made it up to (and including) round 11 and it's a shade over 8 inches diameter and has 12 sides. I don't suppose anyone knows how I can make it into a 12 inch square do they??

HappyAxolotyl · 26/04/2017 07:11

Treasures , there are instructions here (www.lookatwhatimade.net/crafts/yarn/crochet/free-crochet-patterns/sophies-garden-large-crochet-square-photo-tutorial/
I have never done it myself!

HappyAxolotyl · 26/04/2017 07:16

Blush sorry Treasures, I don't think that's the right one. My brain is mush with lack of sleep.

diamantegal · 26/04/2017 07:23

Wow, Norman, that's quick work! I manage about one colour stripe every two days - you appear to be steaming through it. Looks great though - definitely going on the list. It's a long list though...!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 26/04/2017 10:09

WOWwow don't they look FAB! 😁

Thank you bookbook for posting the photos x

Thanks for all the kind thoughts 💐🍰. I'm ok - though if I was a horse they'd put me down! I'm thinking of seeing the vet instead.

I think next year I'm going to have a 'ChippingIn Design' so I can recognise my squares 😂 I have NO idea why it matters if I can see them or not. I've done them, they'll end up in a blanket somewhere, so why does it matter? maybecjust because I'm a bit bonkers & I like to see them sorted with friends & ready to go and release some Hugs!

bookbook · 26/04/2017 11:42

Good to see you back Chipping - take care x
I know what you mean about looking out for 'your' squares :) , but I think a lot are out with construction crews
I know mine were fairly un remarkable, so its a bonus when you do recognise one of your own - gives me a little glow !

MadisonAvenue · 26/04/2017 13:20

Chipping you've been missed! Hope that you're soon on the road to recovery Flowers

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 26/04/2017 14:26

Thank you both 💐

Have you seen the call for Woolly Flowers on the Facebook page? I don't know the back story and I'm not sure if they are all MNers or not (not that it matters, I just mean I'm not sure if I know them under different names on here). Sadly one of them is terminally ill & she has requested Woolly Flowers on her coffin and they'd like her to see as many as possible for herself. Because I don't have FB I can only view it as a guest and with a stupid banner across it so I can't follow things very well, so I'm not even sure if she's a child or an adult, but I'm going into flower mode to get some sent as soon as possible.

There's a very sad, but lovely, post on there about a Little Hug.

NormansNipple · 26/04/2017 14:46

Chipping!! you're back! I have missed your posts Grin

Treasures for 12 sides could you use a squaring a circle tutorial?

diamante I do a few stripes a day. I've got a really long list of things to do too. People keep asking me to make them cushions, that's interfering with my to do list as well!

NormansNipple · 26/04/2017 14:48

This is the FB request for flowers. Sounds like she could be aged from teens to early 20's? I hope you can see it ChippingIn

Treasures · 26/04/2017 15:04

Thanks anyway Happy and your mushy brain Grin I'm with you on the lack of sleep issue. On that link you posted, I'm up to the dark purple round. It's now 9 inches. I've tried and tried to figure out how to square it off at this point but I just can't get my head around it. Going to end up making the whole bloody blanket at this rate Grin Grin

Welcome back Chipping Flowers Saw the call for flowers, very sad, might make some.

Thanks Normans I'll see what I can find tutorials-wise, I'm just not sure because it's got pointy bits (see pic)

bookbook · 26/04/2017 15:28

afternoon !
yes, am planning on some flowers this afternoon/evening after I finish this latest square.
Treasures - good luck! - that is so pretty! - could you wing it - there seem to be 12 shells , so divisible by 4 at least....I did one with those sort of dips, and it was basically a dc in the tip of the point, then dc, 2tr, 2dtr down the side of the dip, and reverse back up so 2dtr, 2tr, dc and back up to do a dc on the tip again. Does that even make sense? Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 26/04/2017 16:06

chains in the corners helps. and possibly taking more than one round to square it.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/04/2017 17:23

lay it out on paper the right size and work out where to put stitches. I would have a slip stich on the point of every third petal. these would be the middle of your four sides then.

work it out from there.

there will be a lot of frogging!

SoupDragon · 26/04/2017 17:30

From their web page, I think Jenny is 18/19. Very sad.

Treasures · 26/04/2017 17:33

Thanks for the suggestions all, I will try them. I might get a bit frustrated but I never ever give up Wink

Spindelina · 26/04/2017 19:00

When I worked out how to square my hexagon, I drew it on paper - measured roughly how big a tr was etc and worked it out from there. It needed tweaking when I actually implemented it, but the paper exercise was a good start.

DoubleR · 26/04/2017 19:54

Hi everyone Grin , thought I'd just pop back in. It's so exciting seeing the completed blankets popping up on Facebook, although I haven't seen any of my squares yet, definitely with you on that Chipping and book, good to see you back by the way Chipping
Maybe my green stripes square is in Soup's construction kit.

Norman I see you're making gorgeous things over on this thread too, I love that colour combo.

Very sad about Jenny, I'm going to get some flowers done tonight too, and then get back on to my little hug.
Also signing up for Juan's blanket. I may have to cancel some other things so I have time for all this crocheting!

KnottyAndPistey · 26/04/2017 19:56

We are doing the final photographing and Chernobyl blanket sort TOMORROW!!!!

There maybe posts on FB about this, then we will know how many blankets we have

VittysCardigan · 26/04/2017 21:08

Exciting!!!!

WitchDancer · 26/04/2017 21:57

I can hardly wait to see all the blankets 🤓

Some fabulous squares as always - I love seeing them all.

Waves to Chipping 💐

I've done a couple of flowers for Jenny too (after learning how to from Bella Coco), and now someone has posted that they have been overwhelmed and don't need any more 😔. Do I send them or not?

bookbook · 26/04/2017 22:22

oh, just come on here - I was just about to start with flowers ...so I went and checked - it say if done, please send, but not to make any more.
I am looking forward to tomorrow!
