Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

EEEEEK posting day is TOMORROW and I still have pesky prodding to do.

Despite being TheSlowestKnitterOnMumsnet, I have now recruited my latest 'volunteer'...a sister who hasn't knitted since 1978.

My skill set is clearly Knagging, rather than Knitting :)

NormansNipple · 07/04/2017 23:11

Oh I see Vitty - I'm very tired today! I think someone mentioned a random stripe generator. Or if you look on some of the Attic24 blogs you could use her randomness? If you allocate a colour of yours to each of hers? Hope that makes sense. I'm off to bed Grin

Norks I don't want to add to the pressure but remember a lot of post offices shut at lunch time on Saturdays! How many recruits do you have now? Wink

bookbook · 07/04/2017 23:19

Evening!
Vitty - so close to the end with that wool! for you. I didn't buy wool as I had DH with me , otherwise I might have...... And I am useless at random colour. Even when I try, I look back and can see a pattern emerging usually. I used a lot of Sirdar crofter for that reason!
Norks - a race to the finish :)

Treasures · 08/04/2017 04:10

Amethyst Hehe! Cats are stupid (and yet, simultaneously quite clever!) I love putting things on his head, he doesn't seem to realise they're there and they make him look prettier Grin My favourite is putting a bright coloured feather on his head as he looks like he's wearing a posh fascinator.

BlackeyedSusan I've decided I'm going to do Refugee squares too so you won't be alone. I really feel strongly drawn to that project. I hate where I live but at least I have a home. It's a crap home, but it's a home nonetheless. I can't imagine what life is like for a refugee.

bookbook We have an allotment too. I haven't been yet this year (ill) so I've been leaving Mr Treasures to it. Had amazing food from it last year though.

Vittys I love your colour choices!

Bearfrills Go for it Grin

Normans Thanks. I feel like I want to ask if it was you who liked the photo on FB, but I guess that would be inappropriate/outing! Thanks if it was. Your cat sounds fun, what does QC stand for? Hang on...is it Quality Control? Grin

QUESTIONS (for anyone):

Is there anything you do with your peskies instead of just putting them in the bin?

If you have a completed granny square, and a completed granny star that sort of looks like a flower, and you wanted to attach the star to the square, how would you do that?

I'm also learning how to do crochet hearts. This is such an addictive hobby!!

Treasures · 08/04/2017 04:11

God look at the size of that post ^
I said when I started that I wasn't one for chatting...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/04/2017 07:20

Treasures. I hope you got some sleep after you posted.

Pesky tails - I have a couple of large ziplock bags I put them in (they look pretty) then when I want to do something colourful I tip them onto the table/in a big white bowl and often a colour combination just comes to me or I pull some out and find others to go with them. A bit like pegs but the advantages are that I have several of each colour, the wool all mixes together (no pegs getting in the way!) & I can ktwist them, lay them in stripes etc. (Only disadvantage is that they aren't labelled! But I pretty much know all the colours ir can easily match them to the labels (which I've tied a bit of yarn to - awaiting time to do pegs). I have a candy's bag & a C2017 bag. Love them! Other than that I use them in place of stitch markers, book marks, or they go into the 'Art' stuff (I'm sure a local nursery/school would love them). Far too pretty to throw out!

Sewing on starflowers (😁) ...just deleted my LENGTHY explanation, I'll see if I can find a good link that explains it 😂 Brb.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/04/2017 07:54

This is a slightly odd tutorial, but it shows the 'just do it' approach HERE

Adding hearts HERE

I can't find anything that is attatching an appliqué to an (open) Granny square, but there's a TON on attaching/sewing appliqué if you want to bore yourself silly!

To quote Nike, 'Just do it!' 😁

SoupDragon · 08/04/2017 08:45

You can use Peskies to stuff amigurumi. If they are long peskies you can join them together to make a "magic ball" of yarn to make something really colourful with lots of knots!

I do neither, preferring to clip them off so they drop to the floor where they stay until ihoover them up so they can wrap themselves annoyingly round the revolving brushes. :o

VintageTeacup · 08/04/2017 08:46

Peskies done and we're ready to post, 6 12s and 6 6s, not many but hopefully they'll help.

Quick questions for seasoned huggers. Is this annual? Is it the same wool and colour palette for this project each year? Not that I'm already thinking of being prepared for next time. Oh no, not I.

WitchDancer · 08/04/2017 09:01

Blimey Vintage, you're keen! If course I'm not marking my place to see what colours I will need for next year 😇

VintageTeacup · 08/04/2017 09:18

Lol Witch, I was thinking of knocking the odd square up in between Candys, always good to be prepared I may be the type to buy Xmas cards in jan

bookbook · 08/04/2017 11:01

Morning!
Treasures - I love my allotment - it is total stress free exercise, with home grown produce at the end. :) - Hope you are getting better, or is it long term ill? - Crotchet at least is a wonderful thing when there is not much else you can manage .Flowers
peskies in bin here - though DH is constantly complaining at the bits every where around, but not 'in' the bin...
two or three really good solid stitches to attach a flower , in the middle , and maybe a few around the edge if its a bit bigger
Vintage - I am thinking much along your lines Grin I have quite a lot of wool left, which are not Candys colours. I thought I would hang on and keep for next time, but this is my first year , so will see what they say. I have a humungous amount of DK wool that is not Stylecraft, so my plan is to use it up for the refugee appeal, spelling Candys, Little Hugs as well :)

MadisonAvenue · 08/04/2017 12:50

This is my first year for Chernobyl too, seeing as this year has been more ambitious than in previous years from what K&P have said I was also thinking that it might be an idea to make some squares in readiness through the year. I suppose that if the project didn't go ahead next year then they could be used for Candy's or refugee blankets.

VittysCardigan · 08/04/2017 14:03

I found this on line for creating random stripes. - it was a bit of a faff to match their colours with mine ( started with 2 colours & noted their names against mine, then added one colour at a time) you can just hit refresh if you're not happy with the result. There is also a version that you can enter the weight of the yarn you have too

www.biscuitsandjam.com/stripe_maker.php?action=generate&colorArr%5B%5D=silver&colorArr%5B%5D=gray&colorArr%5B%5D=darkslategray&colorArr%5B%5D=royalblue&colorArr%5B%5D=paleturquoise&colorArr%5B%5D=lightseagreen&colorArr%5B%5D=teal&colorArr%5B%5D=aqua&rownumArr%5B%5D=2&totalRows=100

NormansNipple · 08/04/2017 15:28

bookbook never let a man come between you and wool shopping Wink

Treasures I was one of the people who liked it! My cat is bonkers, but we muddle along together quite well. He lets me crochet without feeling the need to attack it which is a big plus. Yes QC is for quality control. That’s his mumsnet name so he isn’t outed in real life GrinGrin

I’m going to use some peskies to line the nest in the Easter bonnet I’m making for the competition at work.

Soup Grin

bookbook · 08/04/2017 17:00

The picture on that link is a bit exciting Vitty !
To be fair Norm - he wouldn't have complained, just sort of sighed , and stood around being ready to go while I chose...Its much nicer by myself :)

KnottyAndPistey · 08/04/2017 19:59

Eventually Smile

I can't keep up with you lot and your chat 😀

For those asking, we certainly are planning Chernobs for next year.

Am currently swimming in squares, despite sorting then posting off seven blanket packs today.

Soupy, yours won't be with you until Thursday.

OP posts:
WitchDancer · 08/04/2017 20:19

That's good news Knotty. Do you think they'll be enough to do 70 blankets?

SoupDragon · 08/04/2017 20:25

I have 2 12" squares to post.

Yes, I am aware the last posting date was today... Blush

NorksAreMessy · 08/04/2017 21:10

Ummm...six 12 inchers are ummmm, not QUITE in the post. Oops

My peskies are in a bird peanut feeder. I am waiting to see if any birds fancy a stylish nest

PurpleFrog · 08/04/2017 21:16

I am also running late...

I will be sending 15 x 12" with some squares for Zlad's hug in the next couple of days. I have 2 squares that are crocheted but still need assembling and de-peskying.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/04/2017 21:25

Stupid damn thing has obviously decided my posts look filling because it's eaten a few, but not all of them. Most weird.

Lovely blankets & squares 😊. Everyne has done really well, but definitely a HUGE ⭐️ for you Mwh. FOUR whole blankets is fabulous x

Madison. 🥃🍷 - never ending bottles! Have you & DH walked the dogs legs off today? Such a shame you're off to watch the football tomorrow, can't be helped if you're out from dawn till bedtime I expect DH is really looking forward to a day on his own with his Mum tomorrow, 😖 (that'll teach him to mind what he says 😂). I hope DS is ok?! (Hospital apt).

We do need a secret sign. I usually start waffling on about Charity Blankets & SSDK...I figure it's probably enough for a WoollyHugger to pick up on.

Amythyst. Maybe you can talk her into doing some knitting or crochet? Definitely see you over at Candy's! (If only it was actually with her, at hers 😢 Very much missing her.). If you want to try out doing a whole blanket, you could do a small one for LittleHugs. You can use the SSDK wool if you want, or many other options.

Bearfrills 🍪 Definitely! How's BabyBear doing with her harness? I've lost track, sorry, of how much longer she has to wear it for?

Diamantegal. How did the Lindt Bunny hunt go? I should look to see if they're doing any near here, Lindt is worth hunting for 😁 How long are the inlaws staying for? Gin. For keeping to yourself or sharing depending on how you feel about them 🤣

On FB In the pile of squares you sent, there's a lovely blue one with clusters of blue doubles/trebles. They look to be in a row? I can't currently copy the photo so I can't paste it here. Do you have any idea what I'm on about? If you do, I'd love to know which pattern you used.

Treasures. You should be really pleased with yourself, it's amazing 😊

MrsD. Can I please have the first 'LittleMissChatterbox' charm 😊 Or maybe I need 'Work more, chat less' Blush

Malcolm. I know what you mean about feeling deflated, it's good to be part of something and feel like everyone is pulling together. It helps when there's a specific goal I think. But most of us will be on the Candy Hugs threads & it'll be good 😊

Vitty 🤣 I know exactly what you mean about the pegs! They're pretty & everything, but they're not MAGIC PEGS that tell you if they look good together or not 😂 Unfortunately. I wish I had Zing or Knotty's eye for colour combinations. I usually end up taking colours out that don't 'blend' (like the cloud or sherbert you have there) but it's the colour that makes it 'pop' and not be dull. I either steal others combinations (lots of blogs out there like Attc 24) or 'go random' and keep my fingers crossed! 😖😂

Blackeyed. That made me laugh 😂 What is your 'Never a fucking gain!' WIP?

VintageTeacup. Hello, I missed you! Nice to 'see' you! 6x12 & 6x6 IS loads! Well done 💐

bookbook. I bet DH went with you explicitly so you didn't buy wool 😳🤣. Homegrown asparagus, lovely! I can't bear to throw the Peskies out! You can use the SSDK to make squares or blankets for Little Hugs too, they're for older children as well as babies. Or for kinship Hugs.

Norman. You and QC are welcome anytime 😊 18 12" squares - what a star you are! ⭐️

Norks. Knagging is good, very good 😊 So is chattIng, post more! You can easily gloss over the knitting bit... I have a funny feeling that yours won't be the only ones 'not quite in the post'...

Soup. 😂

Bearfrills · 08/04/2017 22:28

She's still in it Chipping, got her first follow up scan on Wednesday by which time she'll have been in it almost 7wks (she's 8wks old already! Flown over!) so hoping to see a big improvement. She's started smiling, she's so happy all the time :)

Bearfrills · 08/04/2017 22:33

This is her usual position, I rest my wool next to her and we chat while I crochet (the crisps in the side of the photo are totally hers, not mine...)

bookbook · 08/04/2017 22:55

Beautiful Bear - love the bootees . Fingers crossed all goes well on Wednesday :)
Chipping - I am using other wool I chose for Little Hugs - I bought a cotton/silk mix for the one I am doing atm - it just feels so soft . And I will keep an eye on the sales too. But I have a lot of nice wool which isn't SSDK, which I am going through for the refugee appeal -may as well use it up, rather than have it sat sulking in the drawer :). We adore sparagus - it was the first thing planted when we first got our allotment. !
