Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

I'm happy to hook a few more 6 inch squares - I'll make a start on them Tomorrow and post on Monday - I should be able to do 6, and if they come in handy for Chernobyl then great - if not they can be used for Candy's Hugs xxx

Mhw 🥃🍫. Good luck, see you on the other side of Pesky Wars!

Madison. Good thinking to have saved your trip to the PO for when your MIL was there! How many more days do you have to endure? 🥃🍫. Struggling with the concept of 'running out of yarn'...I don't think I'll ever be able to say that. Ordering it is addictive!

Norman. Lucky break for QC & just in time! I'd put the immac where he can see it, just to keep him in line! I have a cosy space on the 'must try harder' sofa...room for QC too of course!

Treasures. I can't believe you've only just started, more great squares! You have every right to be very pleased with yourself! 💐 You are very good with the colours too. Which blue/purple is the dark one on your top right square?. And which green is it?

Spin. Great square, I especially like the one top right.

MrsD. Which hooks did you buy? Do you like them? We definitely need a photo when you've finished your baby blanket.

RR. Great squares! See you over on CH.

Amethyst Good to see you! You have been missed! 💐 See you over at Candy's?

Okki. Love that square!

Witch. If you're not worried about the postage I'd send any that are done. You can just put a note to say you don't mind which project they're used for.

blackeyed. I'm sure that out of 3000 loose squares they'll find some friends! 😊

WBW. Another stunned by blanket, truly lovely 💐

Treasures. The speed you're going you'd probably manage to do a blanket over a lone weekend!.

IAmNot. Thank you, that hit the Spot!

LEM. I don't know how people part with the whole blankets either!

Vitty. I hope your local shop has it, if not Woolwarehouse will get it to you superfast and it would be a shame not to make the most of the free postage for orders over £25 wouldn't it 😂

So many of us with aches & pains! Grrrr

⭐️K&P⭐️ Mine will be in the post on Saturday if it kills me and looking at these Peskies it might well 😂🍫

Yarn pushing again Chipping!! Grin

MrsDilligaf · 06/04/2017 20:15

I bought some pretty multi coloured ones off amazon (which in fairness I forgot I had ordered Grin)

They arrived all the way from China!!

I've got another couple in my wool warehouse basket becau the one I had originally was a bit ...snaggy?? Is that the right word??

Anyway the new one isn't snaggy. But there are loads of teeny hooks in the pack which look like instruments of torture and will no doubt be used by Mr D for rigging up fishing "things"

Grin
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/04/2017 20:55

My name is ChippingIn I am an enabler.

My punishment is 12"'s of Peskies...going in 😖

I have 🍫

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/04/2017 21:02

MrsD. What brand are they?

I do like the look of the fine hooks, but I had to step away as they were no good for C2017 and I was trying not to get distracted from this!

I bought a 3.5" Pony hook to see if the 1/2 made much difference, but it 'snags' too 😖 My original Pony 4 doesn't though. I guess you have to expect the odd fault in such cheap mass made products. If my Dad was here I'm sure he'd have the wet & dry on it! I'll give it a go when I get a few minutes. I can't make it any worse!

My 'good' two are Clover Amour and they're lovely.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/04/2017 21:07

ODG 50 of the little buggers 😖

bookbook · 06/04/2017 21:31

Evening!
There's a snack to doing random Grin IAm - don't mind if I do.... !
Madison - was it very long and necessary trip to the PO today , or is it tomorrow ?
Chipping - peskies do need chocolate . (I will hang out here until they don't need us anymore).
I thought MrsD's idea was good one . I have been doing Candy's 6"ers, but they could easily be used for Chernobyl if needed, so will keep an eye out to see if they need more.
They have put more pics on FB today

TheHatOfDoom · 06/04/2017 21:34

Here are my squares. I'm surprised by how some of them came out.

It looks like I might have room to squish one or two more in the jiffy bag @knottyandpistey would you prefer four sent tomorrow or five/six sent Monday? (am happy to send 1st)

Okay, so mine are, i'm afraid, not going to be posted on Saturday. Just had too much on (brother's wedding, house hunting etc.) and am off to London tomorrow morning. Will definitely post next week. Here are photos, just so K&P know what they're getting!

Humblest apologies for missing deadline!

So you see, they DO exist! They're not just little fantasy blankets in my head or anything. And they're joined and edged and everything, and actually the backs are de-peskified. So it's just de-peskying the fronts left...I just won't manage by Saturday...

bookbook · 06/04/2017 21:42

I doubt they will mind MHw - that is 4 isn't it , and already constructed!
Beautiful too - love the one with hearts and circles .

MadisonAvenue · 06/04/2017 21:46

I've got a Clover Amour which I love.

Woolly that blanket is absolutely beautiful!

Chipping she's now left to stay with friends 150 miles away, her reason for staying here is to break the journey up as she's 3 hours away from us in the other direction...but she'll be back on Saturday lunchtime and then stays until Wednesday. She has old neighbours to see on Monday and a former work colleague on Tuesday. She's coming back on Saturday because my husband told her a few weeks ago that we usually go for a walk around the city on Sundays so she invited herself along. I'm watching football this Sunday though so we weren't actually planning on going, husband's got to take her on his own now Grin After three hours last night he was saying what hard work she is, and at 11pm he suggested that we - he and I - walked the dog around the block so that we could escape.

Took my son for a hospital appointment this afternoon and I'm dying to know if there was a Mumsnetter sitting opposite me in the waiting room. This lady sat down and got out a pair of knitting needles and what looked like Stylecraft Boysenberry and she was knitting something that could've been a 12" square. She was only there a minute or so though when we got called through. We need some kind of secret sign.

Jux · 06/04/2017 21:50

Great, thanks Chipping. I've got a fair few stashed, all 6", but am doing a 12" c2c right now, about half way through it so will probably finish it tonight - certainly in the morning. Sadly, I'm supposed to be working tomorrow so won't have a lot of time to use up more wool for this project, but Candy's Hugs is ongoing forever, as it were!

MadisonAvenue · 06/04/2017 21:53

Mhw one word - WOW!! I'm sure there'll be no problem with waiting a few days seeing as they're complete blankets. I imagine that they need the individual squares so that they can sort them into kits and send to the crew. Maybe just PM them before then and let them know how many complete blankets so that they know when they're working out if they're going to have enough.

book it's only five minutes away, but after that the dog needed walking, and then the lawn needed cutting...she wasn't alone though, she and our youngest were binge watching something on Netflix.

MadisonAvenue · 06/04/2017 21:59

Hat they're lovely, such great colours!

bookbook · 06/04/2017 22:05

Madison - a short respite then Grin - I think we ought to have a sign for Woolly Hugger Mumsnetters wonder what it could be?
Hat - lovely squares.
I have a Clover hook - I presume its an Armour...

Spindelina · 06/04/2017 22:07

Love the blankets! And more squares for more blankets!

AmethystRaven · 06/04/2017 22:18

Thanks Chipping! Yes, I will be back to Candy's.

I went to post my squares today and the lady at the post office said 'Oh I've heard of Woolly Hugs. Mumsnet!' I've never met a real live MNer before so that was exciting Grin

I am so impressed by everyone who is managing whole blankets, they're lovely.

MrsD I found a book of patterns in the library for tiny crochet on those little hooks. Lovely patterns like Russian dolls and cupcakes and baskets of fruit for dolls houses but way beyond me!

Gin all round, I think.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/04/2017 22:57

TF. DONE! 😁

Loving all the beautiful squares!

I'm sewing peskies in between cluster feeds and little breaks for very important biscuit eating - got to keep my energy up for all this sewing.

The finished pile, still got half a dozen to go.

diamantegal · 06/04/2017 23:19

I've nearly finished a second 12 inch square - my aim for 3 in a week was clearly too ambitious. But I reckon I can finish tomorrow morning and if I de-pesky quickly, shove it in the post en route to the Lindt Gold Bunny hunt I've promised to do with DS. I also have in-laws descending tomorrow so need to get it done before they turn up, otherwise it'll never happen.

Please can someone PM me the address?

Then it's back to alternating my ripple blanket with Candy's Hugs - assuming that's where we're all decamping to?!

Treasures · 07/04/2017 02:35

Chipping That's Empire and Meadow. I'm finding it hard to believe myself, how much I've done in such a short space of time. I just can't stop! Since I posted off my big squares, I've made a load of star shapes for no apparent reason at all, and am now doing single-colour 6" squares either for this if they need more, or for another project. I like your big square of 4 smaller squares - I might try and figure out how to do that sort of thing next.

Madison For those MN'ers who crochet/knit in public, there should probably be a Woolly Hugs badge! Perhaps with space to write the person's MN name on it Grin

Bearfrills I love those little piles of peskies. I always think they look a bit like woolly confetti. Sometimes I use them to decorate my cat, he's ever so amused, as you can see by his withering look Grin

Diamante I'll PM you the address.

Loving seeing all the squares and amazing blankets! Good work everyone! Cake
