Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

I should also say that I have dragged an old project out to finish to send for the refugee project. I am hoping to gradually work through all the odds & sods I have started over the years and get them out of my way send them where they will be of use. This will of course have the added bonus of clearing space for a new stash Grin

MrsHathaway · 30/03/2017 20:42

I'm partway through a Little Hug c2c and I'm using the "spiced" palette (see "Kinship Hugs") as it's bright and cheerful but gender-neutral and not babyish. I'm just starting to decrease now, on what must be row 40 ish? I'll use the first row of the linked c2c border to get a good foundation, then a dc round and then scallops (dc, sk1, 5trc, sk1, dc) which is very forgiving round corners. Not sure which colour(s) I'll use at that stage ... but I know who I'll ask! Grin

I aim for 24" ish for Little Hugs though I have previously done some round ones. That's the size I do for my DC as what we call a "dream blanket" - not a cover but something to snuggle up with. DC1 decided his kept bad dreams away and the name has stuck.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 30/03/2017 20:58

Vittys my plan in January was to knit up my existing stash and donate to charity, hence coming over to WH. What has actually happened is I've inadvertently purchased 25 balls of SSDK to participate in Chernobyl and Candy's hugs. Blush
It turns out that Cornwall - where I've been twice this year - is very good for this wool. Truro has a wool shop and an indoor market that both sell it; then this weekend I stumbled upon a wool stall at Cornish Market World in St Austell that was setting up on its first day and had an amazing selection of colours. I was so excited as where I live doesn't sell it locally, and it's important to support independent traders, so I've had to augment my perfectly adequate Wool Warehouse supplies Blush
After finishing my current Chernobyl square I'm going to send it and the others off and then tackle crochet in a bid to move my wool mountain.

VittysCardigan · 30/03/2017 21:13

That sounds very familiar Iam Smile the best laid plans....

WitchDancer · 30/03/2017 21:48

We don't have any decent wool shops around here. The one haberdashery we have smells really musty, which makes the wool smell musty too. Other than that it is The Range, which has just changed it's manufacturer of wool so is hopeless now. I'm thinking this is a good thing as my wool stash would be completely out of hand by now 😇

Thankfully I've had a memory jolt and we have another 6" in shrimp & saffron

Thank you book and MrsH I'm a bit nervous about it because I want to do a good job on it, so your info is really helpful Flowers
Spindelina welcome to Chipping's sofa, it's very comfortable, which is probably not helping me speed up Grin

NormansNipple · 30/03/2017 22:20

Malcolm those wool balls are lovely, they had more muted colour schemes in the shop but I was dazzled by the rainbow! Your ripples are lovely as always Grin

bookbook yes it's called a Sirdar Colourwheel. They had a purplish one and one with blues in too. It's 80% acrylic and 20% wool. It's so lovely and soft that's why I thought of a little hug. I only bought 1 ball it's 150g, so I'm trying to decide whether to add a large border or buy another ball.

RR I'm going to do a c2c little hug too Smile I promised my friend I'd make her a cushion, so I'll quickly do that first. Once the Chernobyl deadline has passed of course!

bookbook · 30/03/2017 22:43

Evening!

  • well I'm ready to parcel up I think . I managed 14 on this load ( 12 in previous parcel ) , glad I managed to do enough for the equivalent of a whole blanket. Vitty and IAm - that is what i promised myself too - I have used some of my stash for the Little Hug, and I have started making refugee hats and squares too , but the wool pile just keeps getting bigger! Though I am limited to travelling a bit to a wool shop - luckily only about 10 miles :). I am now going to get a baby jacket knitted for a family memeber, and then its on with Candys and the new Little Hug...

Hi all

Treasures. I'm glad you've got it sorted, sort of. Just looking at your last square, some of your sets of trebles are quite wonky. How are you holding it? You probably just need to give it a tug (you happy hooker you!😂) to keep it straight.

Spin. You're definitely welcome on the sofa. I'll move the stash if anyone wants to join us on the other sofa.

I did a CTC today and thought I should add a border. So I did the one MrsH linked to, and it ended up too big, so I decided to keep going & make it a 12". I went off piste & I'm almost there but it's a bit wavy. I watched a few tutorials about borders tonight and I'm not really sure why it's not sitting flat. I REALLY want to block it . I'm sure it'll be fine with 'better behaved neighbours' keeping it in line! I'll do another tomorrow & see how I get on.

Anyone volunteering themselves (or their DH's) for Pesky duty?! I need to do them, but I don't 'do' boring. I wonder if we could convince a 'non knitter/crochetet' who wants to join in, to volunteer?!

Yes you LURKERS I'm looking at you, yes you, the one down the back in the pale blue cardi!

😂

The 'do them as you go' award goes to bookbook 😇

Treasures · 31/03/2017 02:43

I love seeing everyone else's squares, there's so much variation, it's inspiring. Also lovely seeing them all land at HQ over on Facebook.

Book Well done on all your squares. Whats the pinky-purpley colour on the square that's bottom-right of the set of 12?

Chipping Yep, some of the clusters are leaning a bit, but I'm not worrying about that. I'm just happy to have finally got straight squares and straight edges! I'm holding it differently depending on what position I'm in - sometimes sitting up, sometimes laying on the sofa, sometimes with a cat in the way... Happy hooker is right, too Grin It's so satisfying, this crochet lark! I'd volunteer to do your peskies, but my own are boring enough to do. I mostly do them as I go, but not always.

bookbook · 31/03/2017 09:01

Morning!
Treasures - it is raspberry, partnered with spice and cypress . It is also the border around the pink/red square up on the left hand side 1 down from the top - that is partnered with magenta and claret :)
Chipping - oh borders... I am much better at judging with knitting - , but it's all a learning curve - I am with you on blocking - I itch to do it!
My DH actually volunteered to do my peskies when I mentioned others doing them. He was quite happy until he realised it was basically a bit like darning. ( He thought it was just using the hook to pull through a few stitches) He backed down sharpish ! To be fair at least he knows how to do it - he does darn his socks, Grin

PurpleFrog · 31/03/2017 11:53

My target was 12 x 12" for this project and I have 15 x 12" so far. Smile

At least I have crocheted 15 - only 8 have been de-peskified! I guess I had better stop and do the others before crocheting any more...

MadisonAvenue · 31/03/2017 13:01

Hello all!

book they all look lovely! So cheery!

Aargh! What a stressy morning! It started off so well. It didn't rain when I walked the dog, I went to the post office to post the Z Kids squares and there was no queue and then the bus was on time and there were plenty of seats. But.....I was going shopping as I need something to wear for a wedding in 3 weeks and I can't find a thing. I'm very much a jeans and t shirt and a big comfy cardi type of gal. I just don't do dressing up. I feel incredibly uncomfortable and self conscious. Anyway, we've had an invite to a posh wedding. I don't know the people who are marrying. He's someone my husband knows through a sport but he hasn't seen him for several years, they're just in touch by text in a "how's things?" kind of way a couple of times a year. Yet for some inexplicable reason we've been invited to the whole thing, although no one else in their 'group' has been invited to any part of it.
I've walked my legs off, tried on so many items of clothing and come away empty handed. I've found nothing that's "me". This was 'find something to wear for this flippin' wedding' shopping trip number two btw.

Right...coffee and crochet is calling.

Treasures · 31/03/2017 13:29

Thanks Book

Madison I feel your pain. I'm exactly the same and that's why I avoid events where I have to 'dress up'. I just wouldn't even contemplate going to a wedding of someone I didn't even know, you're a braver woman than me! Are you looking for a dress? Are smart trousers and nice top an option?

MadisonAvenue · 31/03/2017 13:54

Treasures raspberry is a lovely colour to work with. I don't know if it's because I have two sons so have lived in a mass of blue items for years but I love working with pinky and purple shades.

I would've said no to the invite without hesitation but my husband feels we have to go seeing as we've been invited. It wouldn't be so bad if it was local but it's a 2 hour drive away and it's at 11am. I've tried all combinations - trousers or skirts with blouses, dresses...and there's nothing I like.

bookbook · 31/03/2017 14:10

I loved the raspberry too - along with claret and aster, my favourite colours in the ones I have done. The saffron has been really useful to lift the squares. My least favourite was mustard - followed by grape. Couldn't seem to make them work the way I imagined .
Wedding outfits are a PITA no doubt . I come from a large family , so there is always a wedding/christening etc. Its finding something smart, comfortable and, most important - you can get some wear out of. ( Tight Yorkshire here Grin )

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/03/2017 15:00

I've finally posted some squares, not many, 2x12" and about 6x6" but all different and some nice colours.

I'm the sane about dressing up Madison, I hate it and am rarely seen in anything except jeans or leggings, it's the footwear that's the problem. I can't wear heels or wedges at all, ballet flats are hideously uncomfy too and I have very wide feet. So I wear boots and birkenstocks nearly all the time. The only thing that's worse than formal dress is fancy dress.

VittysCardigan · 31/03/2017 16:08

Madison - I feel your pain. I own a grand total of 3 dresses, 2 of which are for work. I really struggle with them. I have just had to buy a mother of the bride dress too!!

Well mock driving test was a bit of a disaster! Lost count of the times I stalled, made a hash of a roundabout to name but a few errors. Confused

Wanted to go into town & home along the seafront when I'd finished but it's now raining so came straight home. Feeling pretty flat if I'm honest but will get myself into Scarlet O'Hara mode - tomorrow is another day & all that...

TheWoollybacksWife · 31/03/2017 16:44

Oh Vitty - you know they say a bad dress rehearsals means a good performance...

Madison start a thread in Style and Beauty. The ladies there were brilliant when I was looking for something for my silver wedding celebration. Do you have an idea in mind? Colour/style/budget?

Now I'm a bit meh about Raspberry. I think it looks a bit dull compared to some of the colours in the pink/purple palette , but it does work well with yellow.

I'm hiding upstairs for the sake of my own sanity. A menopausal woman and a stressed teen with PMT do not mix. I have wine in the fridge but need to wait until taxi duties are over for the evening (DS has a school disco). Roll on 8:30.

In other news I'm on the 65th of 75 colour changes and have been peskying as I go along . I have to finish and post by Thursday as I'm picking DD1 up next weekend. Frantic wine drinking and hooking this evening GrinWineWine(no hooking emoji so I doubled up on the Wine)

MrsHathaway · 31/03/2017 17:03

Madison - I bought one of these for SIL's wedding, worn with a big crinoline (also eBay). Disguised my then post-natal body but feels like a shirt to wear until you have to squeeze through a narrow gap. Would highly recommend. No idea what S&B would think of it mind you Grin

VittysCardigan · 31/03/2017 17:12

I love that MrsH. I bought this http://www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/shop-all-dresses/prudence-embroidered-dress/203928675#dvtpha227100_2 I in no way resemble the model!

VittysCardigan · 31/03/2017 17:13

I should also say that I have NEVER spent that much on a dress (or any item of clothing) before!

MrsHathaway · 31/03/2017 17:27

Ooh, vair elegant. I would look like a sausage in it, alas.
